TV Simpsons documentary about ‘Homer at the Bat’ episode to air Sunday

Twenty-five years ago, with the sum of one million dollars on the line, Mr. Burns ordered Smithers to assemble the greatest softball team ever seen so he could beat a rival nuclear power plant’s squad. (“Scour the professional ranks! The American League, the National League, the Negro League!”) Enter: Ken Griffey, Jr., Roger Clemens, Wade Boggs, Don Mattingly, and other MLB studs, though it would be Homer’s head that proved to be the championship game’s MVP. Today, season 3’s “Homer at the Bat” stands as a classic installment of The Simpsons, one that helped to usher in the golden age of the animated Fox comedy. It’s already been memorialized at the National Baseball Hall of Fame — over the summer, the Hall “inducted” Homer into its hallowed edifice for his contributions in that episode. And now, the episode is receiving one of pop culture’s finest honors: the documentary treatment.

Fox will air the “comedic” documentary, titled Springfield of Dreams: The Legend of Homer Simpson, this Sunday, EW has learned. The hourlong special, which satirizes Ken Burns’ seminal documentary miniseries Baseball, will pay tribute to the episode while offering up interviews from eight of the baseball stars who appeared as ringers in the episode, as well as Yankees All-Star Aaron Judge, Nick Offerman, Russell Brand, George Will, Tim Gunn, and Dr. Oz, not to mention sportscasters Bob Costas, Joe Buck, Bob Uecker, and Charissa Thompson. In addition, the documentary includes “interviews” with Homer, Moe, Chief Wiggum, Apu, and Comic Book Guy.

Cancelling new run Simpsons and just doing "comedocumentaries" on classic episodes would not be the worst idea.

I hope Jose Canseco is one of the interviews... and that he brings his goats along.

The preview in the full link allows us to see that Canseco (along with Boggs and Sax) is among those interviewed.

No goats shown in the preview, sadly.

I might watch this, but ... Tim Gunn? Dr Oz?

The original team was better!

Before they were dead, that is.

Shoeless Joe: 1908 - 1920
Harry Hooper: 1909 - 1925
Jim Creighton: (Died after a game in 1862, before the MLB was founded)
Honus Wagner: 1897 - 1917
Nap Lajoie: 1896 - 1916
Pie Traynor: 1920 - 1937
Three Finger Brown: 1903 - 1916
Cap Anson: 1871 - 1897
Gabby Street: 1904 - 1931

I would rather watch Tim Gunn play second base than Steve Sax.

-Uh, sir?
-What is it Smithers?
-I'm afraid all those players have retired and, uh, passed on.
In fact, your right fielder has been dead for 130 years.

Damnation! Alright, find me some good players. LIVING players!

I hope Jose Canseco is one of the interviews

The cartoon version of him will now be anatomically correct, at least for one of his hands.

Dr Oz?

Maybe the good Doctor was to blame for peddling Junior's nerve tonic ...

I can only assume that Dr Oz has been invited along to deliver another classic Simpsons golden days line originally delivered by the departed Dr Joyce Brothers --

I brought my own mic!

Eh, I'd say "Hi, everybody!" would be more appropriate for Dr. Oz.

Some of my favorite exchanges:

Homer: You're Darryl Strawberry.
Strawberry: Yes.
Homer: You play right field.
Strawberry: Yes.
Homer: I play right field.
Strawberry: So?
Homer: Well, are you better than me?
Strawberry: Well, I've never met you...but yes.

And...

(Players gathered around the lineup card)

Homer: I can't look! Clemens, did I make the team?
Clemens: You sure did!
Homer: Woo hoo! In your FACE, Strawberry!
Clemens: Wait, are you Ken Griffey Jr?
Homer: No!
Clemens: Sorry. Didn't mean to get your hopes up.

Dr. Oz: Hi, everybody!

Dr. Oz: Hey, did you go to Hollywood Upstairs Medical College too?

_____________________

Hospital Chairman: Dr. Oz, this malpractice committee has received a few complaints against you. Of the 160 gravest charges, the most troubling are performing major operations with a knife and fork from a seafood restaurant.
Dr. Oz: But I cleaned them with my napkin.

_____________________

Dr. Oz: Your eyebrows are dilated.

_____________________

Dr. Oz: Why, if it isn't my old friend, Mr. McGreg. With a leg for an arm and an arm for a leg.

Dr. Oz: [singing] The kneebone's connected to the... something. The something's connected to the... red thing. The red thing's connected to my wrist watch... Uh oh.

Heyward: You're Bryce Harper.
Harper: Yes.
Heyward: You play right field.
Harper: Yes.
Heyward: I play right field.
Harper: So?
Heyward: Well, are you better than me?
Harper: Well, I've never met you...but yes.

This is what I imagine will happen at some point in the 2018-19 off-season.

Due to Major League Baseball exclusivities, this program cannot be viewed in your area. We regret the inconvenience.

Meh.

I would have preferred an actual documentary.
