Twins ‘have to find a place’ for Liriano, assistant GM says

The end of Francisco Liriano’s long recovery from Tommy John surgery is imminent.

The left-hander hasn’t allowed a run in his past three starts for Class AAA Rochester, has walked just three batters during that time, struck out 24 and has forced the major league club to find a place for him on the 25-man roster, assistant general manager Rob Antony said today.

“He’s done his part,” Antony said. “He’s pitched well down there, and now we have to find a place for him.”

Livan Hernandez has a spotless career line as a reliever.  I’m just saying.

I, for one, say that he requires one more start in AAA before he's ready. You never know how the all-star break affected him!

*Full Disclosure: I have tickets to his next probable start.

They can't take Livan out of the rotation! He is WELL on his way to being the first pitcher since Phil Niekro to give up 300 hits in a season.

Demote the team leader in wins to the bullpen?!

However will a powerhouse team like the Twins with their dominant pitching staff find room for an unproven 24-year-old?

They should consider swapping him for Ibanez.

Now if they had somebody like this guy leading the bullpen in IP, I could see where they might find some innings for this Liriano kid.

At first I thought this was a suggestion of how the Twins could get rid of Livan Hernandez, and burst out laughing.

Can you IMAGINE if the Mariners fire their manager, fire their GM, fire their first baseman, and as their first acquisition under the post-Bavasi regime, they trade one of their most popular and productive players for....Livan Hernandez!

And then they could pick up Matt Morris just to round out the rotation. Felix Hernandez will be dominant in the bullpen, just like Brandon Morrow.

The Twins are just trying to gain that year of control they lost while Liriano was on the DL
Is that wrong?

If it costs them the playoffs this year, then yes.

If they let Livan pitch 342 innings like Niekro, he might be the first to give up 500 hits in a season...

What's more likely to happen (that will cost them the playoffs) is their .830 OPS with RISP coming down to their .743 overall OPS in the second half

Wow, 772 hits in a season. Also Old Hoss Radbourn gave up 500 hits a few times.

True, the world series home field advantage was not decided by the ASG winner.

John Coleman's most similar pitcher through 23 being Zack Greinke is.. interesting

I hope he didn't let himself get down after waking up one day in July and realizing his record was 7-30. That would really be a bummer. He did have a good K/BB ratio...

Apparently Liriano and his agent think it's wrong.

As long as they keep him down before they face the Yanks (at least the first time), I'm happy.

I think he may have a beef. What more do they want him to do down there?
   20. Cris E Posted: July 17, 2008 at 07:44 PM (#2862483)
They'll put together a trade in the next two weeks to make space. The question is whether they can trade Livan for anything useful or if they have to move a good SP and hang onto him in order to trade for a good 3B or an eighth inning guy or whatever. This wouldn't be a problem if the front office had returned his agent's first call and pointed out that the trade deadline is in a few weeks and to just shut up and quit screwing up their leverage.
