Twins’ Joe Mauer To Consider Retiring After Season

What could lead Mauer to retire? His slip in production at the plate is one. The plight of the Twins — a roster makeover began at the trade deadline and will continue into the offseason — is another. So is family. He and his wife, Maddie, are expecting their third child around Thanksgiving. Mauer spoke of how busy he has been helping get his twin daughters ready for another school year. The events of May 11 also will be considered. That’s when Mauer, during a game in Anaheim, dived after a foul ball and hit the back of his head on the ground. A sore neck turned into a cervical strain with a concussion. Mauer ended up missing 25 games.

This may wind up being the Joe Mauer farewell tour. What do Minnesotans put in their gift baskets?

Some lemon bars and hot dish.

What kind of FA contract would he even get? In addition to the points above, it might not be worth it to him to be getting an average-ish 1B salary for another year or two given how much he has already earned.

Best wishes whatever he decides. He was a great player when not derailed by injuries. Such is life in the big city.

Seems like this would really bail out the Twins- he's not terrible by any means, but I can't imagine they're particularly excited to pay him next year (+), and I also can't imagine they'd want to let him play elsewhere and risk the backlash.

They don't have anyone else to pay. They traded away all the veterans and the recent wave of prospects (Sano, Buxton) have had their development stall so they won't be winning big arbitration deals.

I certainly wouldn't pay him what he was getting before, but they could give him $5M-$6M and still be way underbudget. Double-checking, they gave Torii Hunter $10.5M in 2015 for a homecoming. That seems way too much, but they could still afford it. Otherwise the Pohlad's will just be pocketing the money.

That's fair, I guess it depends what he would expect to receive. This is total speculation on my part, maybe both parties are on the same page, it just occurs to me things could get a little tricky dealing with the fading homegrown star.

I bought his jersey when I moved to Iowa. Hope his after career life is satisfying.
