Twins lose to Reds and are desperately looking for cures

Not even a month of baseball has been played and the Twins already have used 17 pitchers, including outfielder Ryan LaMarre. And a loss like Friday’s, a four-hour 15-9 bludgeoning to the Reds at Target Field, could lead to more changes.

Molitor’s office was closed longer than usual while the Twins discussed changes to the pitching staff. They designated righthander David Hale for assignment and will call up a replacement Saturday.

“We’re looking at a lot of options about what we can do,” Molitor said.

With 13-man staffs now standard, 17 pitchers in a month (one a position player) is nothing. Not to deny the gist of the story, the Twins are off to an awful start especially on the pitching/defense side.

As of yesterday, the three worst RA/G in the AL were all in the Central -- Minn, KC, CWS. The Central also has 4 of the 6 lowest-scoring teams thanks to Cleveland's cold bats ... and the poor Royals are the worst. The Royals are being outscored by nearly 2.4 r/g, the White Sox by nearly 2.

Buxton just hit the DL. He's off to another atrocious start with the bat, once again dashing the hope of the previous season's 2nd half. Maybe he'll do it again and pull his OPS+ up to league average.

Other than Max Kepler and Jose Berrios, there aren't many bright spots. Mauer's having a nice season but that's due to a crazy 22% walk rate.** Even so, lo and behold, his contract is finally finished. Dozier's having a nice year and also a pending FA. Escobar has established himself as a decent hitter but lousy glove for a SS, having a nice month with the bat ... and a pending FA.

On the pitching side, Berrios is a keeper, Kyle Gibson has been doing well as his K-rate has jumped from 7 to 10 per 9, Odorizzi OK with scary peripherals and Lynn is walking the ballpark.

They went for it as the window was closing but unfortunately they've had a terrible month and there's not a lot of obvious room for major improvement other than a regular dose of KC, CWS and Det (they have had a pretty tough schedule).

Huh? By b-r's SRS measure, the Cards have been the best team in baseball, AZ second, Red Sox and others tied for third.

Seriously, the man had an ISO of 87, can't somebody throw strikes?

The solution is to find on the schedule when they play KC. Jeez, KC makes the White Sox look like a superteam.
