When manager Ron Gardenhire first saw Justin Morneau on Wednesday morning in the clubhouse, he looked at the first baseman and joked, “You’re still here?”
This is how Gardenhire keeps his players loose, and this was a time of uncertainty for Morneau. He was placed on waivers Monday, and his 48-hour window for a team to claim him closed at noon Wednesday. As the Wednesday’s 12:10 p.m. game against Cleveland at Target Field began, there was no word about whether another team had claimed Morneau.
But a major league team official with access to the waiver wire told the Pioneer Press shortly thereafter that Morneau had cleared waivers. That allows the Twins to trade him to any of the other 29 teams.
Before the game, before the deadline passed, Gardenhire said he felt bad for Morneau to have to face questions about his waiver status.
“We all know it’s not easy for him or any other players involved,” Gardenhire said. “You have to keep it light and make them all understand as best as you possibly can that it’s part of the game. We can’t control it and just move from there.”
