U.S.S. Mariner: Mariners Sign Kevin Millwood

As Butch just said…“Nothing smells better than an unfurled pennant flag.”

At 37, he’s been around the block a bunch. Wedge and Willis know him from his time in Cleveland. And, if there’s one thing you can say about Millwood, it’s that he’s always been a guy you could count on to rack up innings. Before last season (when he spent the first few months on the sidelines waiting for someone to give him a job), he’d thrown 150+ innings every year since 2005. Declining stuff has meant that the quality of those innings have gone from being good to just okay, but even at his worst, he’s never posted xFIP higher than 4.86, and he was actually pretty good in limited time with the Rockies last year.

From 2009-2011, he posted the following line:

7.5% BB%, 15.2% K%, 40.1% GB%, 11.5% HR/FB, .294 BABIP, 98 ERA-, 107 FIP-, 105 xFIP-

He’s basically been a pretty generic MLB starter, posting a walk rate right around league average and a strikeout rate just a tick below that. His ERA has been slightly better than his peripherals would suggest, even with the inflated home run rate, but all three of the minus stats (remember, 100 is average, and like with ERA, lower is better) put him right around the average-ish starter mark. Any basic projection of his 2012 performance will start with that performance and then take a bit off to account for the fact that he is getting older, but even at 37, Millwood’s still a useful fifth starter in the big leagues – if he stays healthy and throws 150 innings, he’s probably something like a +1 win pitcher next year.

Screw that, I just noticed a Tweet claiming that the Nats and Boras have agreed on an eight-year deal for Prince.

I was expecting Madeline Albright. I wasn't even that lucky.

The Interwebs appear broken regarding Prince Fielder. Twitter claims from all over have him going all over the place. Why can't Walter Cronkite just come on-air and tell us what happened?

Does this work any better?

Well...this could just be somebody spoofing us all. But the deal seems to be for "eight years" but with an opt-out after 3 years.

If it isn't all a hoax, that is.

Since nearly an hour has passed and no one of consequence has followed up, I am starting to think it's BS.

Yeah, maybe we're all being punked.

nothing new on Fielder at MLBTradeRumors.com, fwiw.

Man, poor Kevin Millwood. Look how little anyone cares about him.

nothing new on Fielder at MLBTradeRumors.com, fwiw.

At this time of day, it's not worth much for breaking news.

What's a good sign for the Nats, regardless of Fielder (and right now, I like their chances of signing him), is that they never had any interest -- or need -- in signing Millwood. Two or three years ago, he would have been viewed as a candidate for their third starter, not their fifth.

I wish Kevin well, and hope pitching in that huge Seattle park bolsters his numbers.

Back in 1999 I got talked into playing fantasy baseball with a couple of my neighbors sons.
My first (and only) year and I won the league - 10 guys - 8 young studs and two old farts.

Millwood was my "young stud" that year.
Turned out to be his best year ever, according to BBREF.

In 2010 he was brought in to help shore up a leaky starting rotation by the O's.

Poor guy couldn't get much help from the O's hitters and owund up 4 and 16.

Ignominous at best.
Good luck Kevin; I hope Safeco treats you better than Camden Yards did.

From MLBTradeRumors.com:

A Nationals source says he would be "stunned" to see the Nats give Fielder a contract for longer than seven years, reports Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post. Kilgore also looks at some other recent contracts for slugging first basemen and predicts Fielder will receive a seven-year, $170MM deal with whatever team signs him.

7/170? That's funny stuff.
