Ump taps Torii Hunter on face during scrum; MLB reportedly reviewing

As with baseball scrums, there was a lot of standing around and yelling, but no actual fighting. That’s pretty standard when it comes to benches clearing incidents. There was contact though. Umpire Paul Nauert gently tapped (slapped?) Hunter in the face in an effort to calm him down.

Animated gif of the incident in the article.

Even including "slapped?" in parenthesis mischaracterizes the incident in my opinion. It is not even close to a slap, it's more of a guiding Hunter's face away from the scrum in an apparent attempt to settle things down.

Nauert shouldn't be touching a player's face and probably deserves a reprimand for this but I didn't think it was a big deal. The writer makes the fair point that Hunter would probably have been ejected and fined at least if he had done the same to Nauert though.

It's a dope tap. It still deserves a reprimand and possibly a fine or suspension.

Looks more to me like he was trying to turn Hunter's head to get him to look directly at him (the ump).

"That's my guy," Hunter told The Detroit News of Nauert. "He was trying to cover my mouth. I've known him too long [to be upset]. He was just saying to me, 'C'mon, T. You're way better than that.' And he's right.

"I apologize to the fans for my reaction."

Hunter obviously doesn't think its a big deal either. Hunter is a good dude who has managed to compile a heck of a career.

It's a loving caress. Not worth noting, we've been assured on the OTP thread.

#6 - I don't get it.

#4: If Hunter is OK with it, then that goes some ways towards reducing the severity of the incident. I still don't like it, though.

Then you are one of the lucky and sensible people who haven't looked at the OTP Politics thread in the last day or so. And you should consider your confusion more than an equitable trade for your personal happiness.

I have been assuming that the OTP Politics thread consists of the same eight or so people ranting furiously and is ignored by everyone else.

That certainly is my impression the few times I peek in. Pretty much Joe K vs everyone, with a dash of 'Ray is a robot', sprinkled with a 'I'm not a libertarian, you are' twist.

11 - Same here. It's the ONLY thread I avoid. I even poke around the NBA/NHL/NFL threads occasionally. But OTP: Politics.....nope. I like you people too much!

What we need is another gaming thread....I just never have time around this part of the year because you people keep paying your taxes and such

ugh, just got pulled into Civ V again after all the steam discussions in the last game thread. Really a fantastic game, so many different civilization flavors with the expansions. It takes up a heck of a lot of time though...just one more turn, ok after this build, wait, wait new technology, ahhh, #### it, it's only sleep.

God damnit, they're important and don't you talk about them like that in other threads!

I thought it looked like that as well, but still a big no-no to touch a player like that, IMO.

Hunter is a good dude who has managed to compile a heck of a career.

He sure has. I'm amazed at what he's done the past few years! His last season in Anaheim he raised his BA above .300 (it was .262 the season before and .279 over the prior three seasons) and drastically reduced his BB. I was sure the increased BA and BABIP was just luck and the Tigers would get burned, but lo and behold he did it again last season. BA was still above .300 and his BB were down even further, but BABIP was still way above career level. He's still looking pretty good so far this season, too, though the BABIP is down closer to his career norm.

It almost seems as if he made a conscious decision to swing earlier in the count and put the ball in play more often, and he's somehow been able to bump up his BA without any real increase in K's. You expect older guys with a slower bat to guess more often and swing earlier to make up for the loss of bat speed, but you don't expect them to end up with a higher BA, lower BB, higher BABIP, and with no increase in K's. Weird!
