Umpires show ethnic bias in ball/strike calls—unless they’re feeling watched

Do these subtle biases add up? The authors make a compelling case that they do. One of the ways they do this is by analyzing the location of the pitches. They divide the area near home plate into three regions: probable strikes, probable balls, and an edge region between the two, where the call is likely to be largely based on the umpire’s discretion. Normally, just under 20 percent of pitches are thrown to that edge region. But, when an umpire is not being monitored (and thus more likely to display a small bias), pitchers that are an ethnic match for the ump are five percent more likely to aim for this edge region.

How many black umpires are there? 2? 3?

I'd like to see a racial breakdown of who gets thrown out of the game by who. Maybe study all close plays on the bases and do a racial breakdown of those.

CB Bucknor isn't biased. He can't get the call right for anybody.

Eric Gregg must have been very very Cuban.

Robots.

In the games I've watched it seems like the umpires are doing a really fantastic job on calls at first and tag plays and traps and all of that relative to years past. The balls and strikes remain frustrating. I don't blame them, I just think it's impossible for a human being to do anything close to perfectly.

Forget it, all those bending units are made in Mexico.

I would pay good money to see the look on TLR's face when a robot ump tells him "Bite my shiny metal ass.".

The main problem is that it's obvious the umps aren't trained to have consistent strike zones WRT each other. It's as though their only instructions are "call what you think is a strike."

Hey check it out, Same Swing's calling himself Paul M. now...

Hell, there aren't a ton of black pitchers, either.

Same Swing's

You (or someone) referenced "Same Swing" recently. Want to shed some light for those of us who don't get it.

Don't go there. We don't need a nother "Is Pedro Martinez black" thread.

I'm not going to say where I come down on whether Pedro Martinez is black or not, but I think the author's use of "ethnic" as opposed to "racial" would suggest that, for purposes of this study, he is not.

Mickey Mantle used to call Roger Repoz "Same Swing", IIRC.
Because he always hacked viciously, had no "two strike" approach.

At this point I'd be hoping for TLR to get Roberto as an ump.

Ray King is still pitching, right? 'Cause he's gotta count as two or three all by himself.

Ray King has gotta count as a ton all by himself.
