USA Today: Bodley - GMs cook up trades in hot stove league

With the exception of curiosity surrounding where Alex Rodriguez will end up and whether a team will fork over the $350 million he wants, much of the conversation at this week’s GMs meetings has been about trades.

“When the free agent market is this thin, that tends to push teams back into trades,” Boston Red Sox GM Theo Epstein said. “That will be good for baseball.”
...
“I think Santana will be moved for sure,” Phillies GM Pat Gillick said earlier in the day.

White Sox GM Kenny Williams, who said he’s listening to offers for Crede, said there has been large interest in his players, especially pitchers.

Said the Cleveland Indians’ Mark Shapiro: “You’re going to see more teams trying to match up big-league-to-big-league trades than you have in a long time. But there’s going to be a strong resistance to prospect trading. There’s a greater understanding of the value of prospects now.”

I’d be up for a December Winter Meetings chock-full of old-time trades… the more the merrier, I say.

I sure don't want Santana to go to the Dodgers. They don't deserve him, and I don't want a bunch of their prospects on the Twins.

But there’s going to be a strong resistance to prospect trading. There’s a greater understanding of the value of prospects now.

So at what point do a good portion of front offices overcorrect on this, and start getting fleeced on trades for prospects?
I'm gonna guess this offseason.

Sure you do, but you don't gather around a hot stove to discuss things in the summer. In the winter the stove, often being the only source of heat, was the center of socializing.
