Anthony Rendon got plunked on the elbow by a Marlins pitcher 10 days ago. The Nats refused to place him on the DL IL until today (retroactive to Saturday) which had left them short a player (actually two players when Ryan Zimmerman got injured) during games against division rivals. Now this lovely news:

Byron Kerr @masnKerr
Rizzo said they had to drain fluid from Rendon's elbow, which doesn’t portend for quick return.

Jamal Collier @JamalCollier
Anthony Rendon is finally going on the 10-day injured list with a left elbow contusion (retroactive to Saturday), the Nats announce. He had missed seven of the past eight games since his injury on April 20th. Rizzo said the Nats hoped initially Rendon would be out just 3-5 days and he’d rather play short a few days than have Rendon out for extra time. But after he played Friday the swelling returned and hasn’t calmed down so they wanted to take time to get it right.

Jesse Dougherty @dougherty_jesse
Dave Martinez said the Anthony Rendon situation became “stalemate” where they were waiting for Rendon to be ready but the elbow wouldn’t heal. He can now come off the injured list as soon as May 7.

Mark Zuckerman @MarkZuckerman
Martinez on Rendon: “He wanted to play. He tried to play. It didn’t get better. ... It got to the point where it was a stalemate.”

Who's in the pilot house?? This has happened numerous times in the past few years: they think they're real smart by holding a player off the DL, then he loses even more time when they relent and finally place him on the DL.

Daniel Brim @DanielBrim
The peak of the steroid era saw a HR for every 21.7 balls in play. March/April 2019 is seeing a HR for every 19.3 balls in play. (You can quibble with the definition of balls in play, I'm just using everything that's not a strikeout, walk, or HBP).

Here's a graph of home runs per ball in play for every calendar month since March/April 1908. Barring anything crazy today, MLB is about to set another record.

A lot of guys think the ball is juiced, but I think it's global warming. Yeah...that's the ticket!

The strikeout call in the As - Sox game to Pinder to end the top of the second was so over the top, it literally made me laugh out loud.

There are reports of airborne swine in the vicinity of Fenway Park, as Sandy Leon not only singles but drives in a run.
   7. salvomania Posted: April 30, 2019 at 07:43 PM (#5836917)
Really hate intentionally walking the No.8 hitter with two outs and a base open...

Let's hope it doesn't come back to bite Wainwright and the Cardinals...

EDIT: The pitcher grounds out, but jeez, why not go after the career 75 OPS+ No.8 hitter (79+ in 2019) and then have the pitcher leading off the next inning instead of the top of the lineup?
   8. salvomania Posted: April 30, 2019 at 07:56 PM (#5836920)
And sure enough the Nats score in their half of the next inning.
   9. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: April 30, 2019 at 08:01 PM (#5836923)
Watching the Tigers' broadcast feed of DET/PHI - they've devoted this entire half-inning to an interview with Casey Mize about his no-hitter with absolutely no mention of the game action, until they finally interrupt the interview to mention that the Tigers scored the tying run. That's just bizarre.
   10. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: April 30, 2019 at 08:06 PM (#5836925)
...Nico Goodrum home run also worthy of brief mention, apparently, and then back to Casey Mize and his no-hitter. Is the Tigers broadcaster who looks like an old Jack Morris actually an old Jack Morris? That may explain it.
   11. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: April 30, 2019 at 08:08 PM (#5836927)
...some guy named Rodriguez hits a triple, and so of course the conversation turns to crediting Casey Mize's interview for the team's offensive performance.

I've got the best seats I've ever had at a baseball game. Loge 129 row AA at Fenway. Porcello could hear me call him a bum if he'd been a bum through four strong innings.

Wong with a beautiful bunt to put the Cardinals on the board, and Bader with a two run single to give the Cards a lead.
   14. Howie Menckel Posted: April 30, 2019 at 08:37 PM (#5836943)
I'm not saying the Reds' offense is struggling, but Jason Vargas of the Mets has blanked them for 5 innings so far.

meanwhile, in 28 games this season Joey Votto is batting .400 with runners in scoring position. he is 2 for 5.

ok, he led off in 10 games but still.

EDIT: Suarez just homered
   15. salvomania Posted: April 30, 2019 at 08:44 PM (#5836946)
From Gameday: "Jake Bauers grounds out to first baseman Martin Prado in foul territory."

?????

Is this a contest? OK, I’ll go with paying Bobby Bonilla until 2035.

This is a bad time for the defense to take a crap.

Hey guys, what do Austin Hedges, Freddy Galvis, Kevin Pillar, and Hunter Dozier have in common?

ANSWER: they've each hit more homers than Kris Bryant over the last year.
   49. Meatwad Posted: April 30, 2019 at 11:36 PM (#5837027)
And how many spent a lot of time on the DL last year for an injured shoulder? Why Kris Bryant did.

yes, that worked out so poorly
"by renegotiating Bobby Bonilla’s contract in 2000 to pay him $1.19 million annually from 2011 to 2035, the Mets:

1) Achieved the financial flexibility necessary to acquire players that put them in the World Series that season.
2) Got rid of a massive headache.
3) Earned a draft pick they used on seven-time All-Star David Wright.
4) Made a reasonably shrewd financial decision.
5) Became an annual laughingstock."

The 5,471 combined career strikeouts between #Yankees CC Sabathia and #Dbacks Zack Greinke are the most between opposing starters since #Padres Greg Maddux and #Phillies Jamie Moyer in 2008. (5,567)
