Van Slyke likes new Tigers lineup

Woo-hoo!...The toughest lineup to come out of Detroit since The Bump-N-Uglies!

While the Tigers were second in the A.L. in batting average (.287) and runs (887) in 2007, critics of the Tiger offense point to the lack of drawing walks and speed. Detroit was just 12th in bases on balls and sixth in steals. Van Slyke said the addition of Cabrera and outfielder Jacque Jones from the Cubs will bolster the walk totals, and as for speed, it’s a trait few teams possess in the power-hungry American League.

“I’m not worried about the stolen bases,” he said. “Home runs as part of the evolution of the game. It’s like when (former Baltimore Oriole manager) Earl Weaver used to wait for the three-run homer.”

Van Slyke said it’s a lineup that has power and can hit for average and even if it doesn’t produce more walks, it’ll take queasy pitchers deep into counts, leading to early departures for starting pitchers and ultimately overworked bullpens.

“You can’t guarantee anything, but we’re in a position like the Yankees,” he said.“We’re expected to win. And that’s not bad pressure, that’s good pressure.”

“You can’t guarantee anything, but we’re in a position like the Yankees,”

Truest words spoken this offseason. This lineup is simply awesome, they will score 900 runs or more next season. But the Yankee comparison extends to defense as well. You're going to see a lot of hits get through the left side of the infield this year. And the pitching depth looks like what the Yanks had early last season, before the kids came to the rescue, not very good.

I really don't understand why the Tigers don't leave Inge at 3b and put Miggy in LF. Optimal defensive alignment, and the only person who gets screwed is Jacque Jones--but that's a good thing. And Jones would make a very good 4th outfielder.

The Tigers bullpen is suspect, but they just signed Matt Mantei to a minor league deal, so he'll be their savior (unless he has to face Todd Pratt in the playoffs)...

Jones to Miggy in the OF is probably as big of a defensive hit as Inge to Miggy at 3B. The Tigers should effectively platoon Jones and Inge:

vs RHP

3B Cabrera
LF Jones
DH Sheffield

vs LHP

3B Inge
LF Sheffield
DH Cabrera

or Cabrera in LF and Sheffield at DH, but I'm not convinced that there's much difference between them with the glove and I'd rather not move Cabrera around on defense -- it can be interpreted as "disrespect" -- at least until he's signed long-term.

Emphasis mine. HA!

Cabrera will hide the regression from the rest of the lineup so they'll probably score a few more runs than last season, but not a whole lot more.

well Jones did walk 6.8% of the time vs Monroes 5.3% so it's possibly an improvement from that perspective.

You're missing a piece, though I suspect that Leyland will miss it, too.

vs. RHP:
3b Cabrera
LF Jones
CF Granderson
DH Sheffield

vs. LHP:
3b Cabrera
LF Thames
CF Inge
DH Sheffield

the feeling i was made to get last year was that granderson was developing against left-handed pitching. but those splits are uuuuuugly.
