Van Wagenen is managing Mets games from home in ‘unusual’ struggle

According to an industry source, it was the rookie GM who instructed Mickey Callaway to remove Jacob deGrom from a game in Arizona earlier this month in which the Mets ace sustained a hip cramp. After deGrom was removed from the game in the seventh inning, the bullpen imploded in a loss that added to the frustration of a 2-5 road trip.

The source said Van Wagenen, who was watching the game at home on TV, communicated with a member of the Mets support staff with an order to remove deGrom from the game. Callaway complied with the order, and deGrom was visibly upset as he departed the field, certain he could continue pitching. The manager was grilled for the move, but at the time insisted the decision was his.

“Hell, yeah, it’s unusual: Sending word to the dugout, telling the manager what to do?” the source said. “I have never heard of that before.”

Van Wagenan's "denial" was one for the ages: yes, he communicates with the training staff during games and will continue to do so, as it is permitted. No, of course he can't and won't talk to the manager during games.

gee, if only the trainer and manager worked within several miles of each other during a game.....

The source must not be familiar with the Yankees when George was at his peak.

It's similar to how Bobby Valentine managed the Mets by communicating with that guy with the mustache and sunglasses.

The Yankees reportedly have a team of people in the tunnel, passing messages to Aaron Boone.

Billy Beane used a similar method to communicate with the folding chair.

Is it against the rules for GM and manager to communicate mid-game? Presumably not in all circumstances as you get those rare times when a player is traded mid-game.

I'm a bit confused -- deGrom had a hip cramp ... and Callaway kept him out there (and deG wanted to stay out there)? It might be overly cautious but that seems like an appropriate time for a GM to step in to protect the team's "asset."

Of course if he's butting his nose in on a regular basis, that's a different story.

I think Callaway is gone very soon. Going to a reliever tonight seemed weird, and the Phillies broadcasters were saying that as well.

Yeah, Vargas had thrown only 77 pitches or so through 6.1, given up one or two hits (plus the one on the last batter) but otherwise was breezing through. It didn't make a whole lot of sense, unless there was something the announcers mentioned later on that I missed (which was possible, as I flipped away after a while, and with, it turned out, good reason).

The headline is weird. At first I was trying to figure out what unusual thing he was struggling with. A python? Gnomes?

So that Cano/Diaz trade is working out well, huh?

Maybe I shouldn't have bought that Diaz jersey.

Seriously Diaz has 4 blown saves and 5 losses. He strikeout numbers are good. He has given up a lot of home runs. Does anyone who knows pitching better that I tell me is this freaky or is there something wrong with him?

It's the Mets, so I assumed it was smallpox.

YTD is 4.94 ERA and 3.13 xERA
last month is 11.70 and 4.19

the last couple of games, he looks terrified. had two critical walks in that 5-run implosion in the finale vs Phillies. talent is there, but the ship be sinking and he doesn't know how to swim, it seems.

I was pretty sure trading for Cano was stupid, but I never dreamed he would be worse than Alomar. Way worse than Alomar.
