Vasile: Sabermetrics: Past, Present & Future

Don’t have time to read this now (squeezing Pool Holograph onto my list is proving quite problematic!).

So as they gain a more significant foothold, sabermetricians continue to get the word out and convince people to change their thinking.

“I don’t think that sabermetrics really needs to fight that fight, because the fight is over and sabermetrics has won,” Pomrenke said, not seeing a reason to argue with people who insist that sabermetrics don’t work.

“It is pretty easy to demonstrate that [the notion that sabermetrics doesn’t work] is untrue,” Bill James said. “Our boys have kind of taken care of that for me.  We have three World Series rings.  We don’t have to explain nothin’.”

Tango colorfully echoed James’ sentiment.

“If someone studies the results of the research, and then provides criticism of the methodology, assumptions, data and underlying basis of the research, then I can have a conversation with that person,” he said.  “Otherwise, providing a summary opinion with no evidence is tantamount to bulls**t.  It’s the very definition of bulls**t.  And I’m not interested in debating bulls**t.”

Could we argue that HoF voters are arguably the last stronghold of non-sabermetric thinking?

I will borrow this for some meetings later. Dealing with this kind of bulls**t is not limited to baseball analytics, unfortunately.

Ain't that the truth! Amen, brother!

Politics, religion, business dealings, insane family members - we all have to deal with these everywhere we go. There are always people who want to issue - and try to enforce - opinions with no evidence whatsoever to back them up. It's all BS.

Had a meeting yesterday where a colleague continued to deal BS in extraordinary measures with nothing to back it up.

It's so terribly frustrating.

Working in government is nigh impossible when you have a low BS tolerance..

My office has 14 vacant offices with desks in them, an office used as a storage room and an office used as a recording studio for webinars. We are in the process of hiring two new employees, guess which two rooms my Sales VP is insistent be used as offices for these two employees. Hint: it's not one of the 14 spaces ready to go that requires no work other than IT flipping a switch to activate the phone and internet port.
