VIDEO: 17-year-old female knuckleballer throws BP to Rays

Chelsea’s knuckleball is real. She hit Longo in the back. I loved it. With that pitch & her composure she can compete

Not bad at all.  Joe Maddon seems like fun.

He really does.

That's awesome. If ever a woman was going to make it, it would be a knuckleballer. She certainly seemed very happy - as she should.

And the pitches didn't look half bad.

I don't want to be *that* guy, but is this really a good idea when you've got the worst offense in the league? OTOH, I guess regular batting practice wasn't doing much for them anyway.

I'd hire her to throw BP on the days my team was facing Dickey or some other knuckleballer.

I can't wait to see what Rob Neyer thinks about this.

I had a conversation with Billy Sample once about the knuckleball - he literally never got a hit off a knuckleballer - and he said that to him, every knuckleballer's pitches moved completely differently. He said if Charlie Hough threw batting practice before the Rangers faced Phil Niekro, it wouldn't really help because it was a totally different pitch.

Small sample size, but I found that to be really excellent insight.

Apparently, she hit Longo with a pitch. She must have mistaken him for Ryan Braun.

#6 -- That's interesting. Arguably, extra BP wouldn't help anyway; knuckleballs are inherently unpredictable, so if the pitch is working there's absolutely nothing the batter can do.

I think if you were smart about it batting practice against a knuckleballer would help. work on timing how to swing your approach and so forth.

She went 3-0 0.74 ERA with a save over 5 games and 19 innings this year as a junior on the varsity team in 7A ball, per MaxPreps.
I wonder if she'll get a shot to pitch in college (I imagine so, though I'm not sure about D-1) - she made the All-Tourney team at a Perfect Game event, but I don't know if that tells us anything.

Speaking of 17-year-old female knuckleballers, does anyone know what Eri Yoshida's up to?

She got three seasons in the Golden Baseball League, but after 2012 her team (Maui) shut down.

I see what you did there.

Looking at how the Rays hitters were flailing at a 17-year old girl's knuckleball explains a lot as to why their offense is so horrid this season...

Judging by some of his photos online, that Sample size appears to be getting larger...

C'mon primates! I was hoping for more Rays-related snark such as...

"She hit Longoria in the back with a knuckleball? I'm surprised that didn't put him on the DL for a month..."

or

"I'm surprised Maddon didn't sign her and put her in the rotation considering how Alex Cobb pitched last night..."

Given the Jays have been signing knuckleballers this past year (Viola the 3rd signed recently, Tomo Ohka earlier but released) I say why not? It would fill lower minors parks and seeing as she got pitches past a few Rays in the video along with some weak grounders maybe she'd be successful at the minor level and could train catchers on how to catch the knuckleball (as long as Dickey is here that is very useful).

I'm impressed that Joe Niekro taught her the knuckleball when she was seven, and she's still at it. Must be about as intuitive for her as walking is by now.

He said if Charlie Hough threw batting practice before the Rangers faced Phil Niekro, it wouldn't really help because it was a totally different pitch.

I remember the Braves bringing in a Niekro to throw to the team before they had to face Wakefield in the playoffs. And looking back...Wakefield had two complete game victories over them, so I guess it didn't work. Although they did score six runs including four homers.

Too bad she's a righty. A junk-throwing lefty might be useful to a MLB team as a LOOGirl...

Eh, I'd say he's still about 20 pounds away from being statistically significant.

Check her pockets.

I guess she would have a better reason than Joe to have an emory board in her pocket.

They asked her dad if she doctored the ball, and he said, "It's a hard slider."

That's great, she can make them swing and miss, legitimate big-league hitters like Jose Molin........

Nevermind.....

Signed with an independent league in Japan. Five years playing pro baseball in two countries. Pretty awesome, IMO.

Ahh, thanks for the update. I didn't see anything on the Internet, which is weird for a pro ballplayer in 2014.
I got to see her pitch against the San Rafael Pacifics last year, and although she did not have a real good day, I was grateful for the opportunity.

- no surprise
she could pitch like kershaw and hit like trout and she'd still be banned from OB

most can take her pitching bp as a joke, kind of like the phanatic doing it, seeing as how females are a joke anyway, but anything else would be met with a stream of hate that would make ann coulter look sweet and loving
