An interview with Rob Perri about his film “I’m Keith Hernandez.”......hmm, now where did I ditch my “Inside Deep Note” CD soundtrack?
Just how times have changed. Also just how cocaine and drinking and that kind of stuff—I wanted baseball to go back to that, you know? I was going through all this footage and looking at this stuff and I went to the ’82 World Series and the best hitter is Robin Yount. They guy is like 160 pounds. He is the best player, and these guys are like blowing lines and banging chicks—and that’s baseball to me, not some pituitary case of some guy who can’t get his helmet on his head, with shrunken testicles. The game doesn’t look the same to me, doesn’t feel the same. It doesn’t feel right. It feels almost wrong or strange. Some giant dude with a little toothpick in his hand is like… Not every guy who was stepping up the plate looked like that: there were a couple of big fat guys. It was a different feel. So I kind of wanted to remind myself of what I loved about baseball why it meant so much to me as a kid growing up, why it was exciting back then, because it’s a lot less exciting to me now.

At first I thought Keith Hernandez was saying this, and I was like, totally, "whoa man! I can't believe you're saying this! Cool!"
Alas, it's not Keith saying this. FWIW, I miss 80's baseball, too. That 1982 World Series was a pinnacle of contrasting styles. Also the 1987 series.
Lots of pinnacles in the 80's!
Turns out he wasn't the spitter. I think it helps his chances by removing that black cloud from his record.
I wish I could say the same for Roger McDowell.
what, cocaine vs. alcohol?
Because you played back then, and you don't play now, Keith?
Keith Hernandez never should have directed this movie and then conducted this interview with himself.
Wow, in comment #2 someone admits that he thought the quoted statement was Keith Hernandez talking, and then in comment #8 someone actually does assume that the quoted statement is Keith Hernandez talking.
RTFT. Hey, a new acronym!
Help, but his commercials with Walt Frazier sure don't.
Are you channeling Zapp Brannigan, mayor? :-)
True story.
Coutlangus on in relief for the Reds.
Announcer Gary Cohen says, "I'd better pronounce this one carefully."
Hernandez responds: "Ah, a real tongue-tier for you, huh, Gary?"
Not sure if that helps or hurts his chances, but it happened.
Hey...at least he didn't say "women belong in the kitchen...and man in the boat"
These are ironic-the two smoothest NY sports figures of the past 30 years acting consciously silly- and thus I love them.
Mets-Reds game the other day.
True story.
It's like Hernandez is always one comment away from causing a storm, but knows exactly how to straddle that line. He's funny, but he also knows his baseball. It is such a pleasure, getting to hear three intelligent men on any Mets broadcast.
Just the innocuous ones, eh?
More of a massif, maybe?
Madonna certainly went in for pinnacles in the 80's.
I'm a fan of neither team, but Mets are enormously better than the Yankee team. It's the difference between watching a comedy on HBO or something from CBS's lineup.
More of a massif, maybe?
I admit it, I had to look this up. Smarty pants.
I just read an article in Military History Quarterly on the taking of some Italian Alpine village (whose name I can't recall, San Su'umrother), so that word is kind of stuck in my head right now. Sorry.
No sweat. I'm always happy to learn new words. After reading all of John McPhee's stuff on geology, I should have known that anyway. I retain nothing anymore.
Bid McPhee was a geologist, too? Wow!
;-)
