Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to undergo MRI after leaving game vs. Mariners

Toronto Blue Jays rookie sensation Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will undergo an MRI after leaving Saturday’s game against the Seattle Mariners, manager Charlie Montoyo revealed to reporters post-game.

“He felt a little tweak in his knee so we took him out just in case. So he’s going to get an MRI to make sure he’s fine. I’ll know more about it tomorrow,” Montoyo said.

Montoyo added that he would pull anyone that complains about an injury as a precautionary measure, especially considering where the team is at this juncture of the season.

I have to wonder- is it his build that seems to be making him susceptible to injury, or something else?

Not much to wonder, for me. From the moment I saw him in the Fall League I felt that his build and weight were going to be issues for knees and back.

That's why Toronto should not have bothered with the service time games. They need to get as much out of him while they can.

His build has always struck me as odd. Is Vlad Sr. married to a bowling ball?

Day to day, no major injury.

#2, I’m not sure marrying was in the cards. Vlad reportedly has eight kids with five different women. Not clear from a quick search if he’s married to one of them.

Vlad jr was a pudgy little kid, too. Not quite Prince Fielder-ish, but he's a little butterball in that pic where he and Sr are both in Expos uniforms.

I'm pretty sure extremely fit athletes tweak their knee, too.

Vlad Jr is listed 6'2". (74 inches) and 250 pounds

I question both those numbers. He may be 6'2" but I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure he's over 250 pounds, but again can't be 100% certain.

Anyway

250/74 = 3.378. Ratio

Search:
Minimum 73 inches tall
Maximum 75 inches tall

So there just aren't a lot of guys this size that last a long time.

Prince was listed at 5'11, 275. He lasted through age 32, 6800+ PA

I just think Vlad Jr's body type works against him having one of those 8000-10,000. PA usually needed to put up HOF or HOVG type career.

I'm sure you're right that Vlad has a higher risk of these types of injuries, but I don't think you can conclude anything using B-R's listed weights. Plenty of guys probably started out below 250 lbs. and gained weight over time. I also think you've set the search parameters too narrowly if you're excluding guys like David Ortiz (listed at 6'3, 230) and Miguel Cabrera (listed at 6'4, 249).

I hope Sano and Vlad Jr make an all-star team together for combined weight of well over 500 lbs.

These are very good points. Admittedly my use of PI here to support my point is barely one step above anecdotal evidence.

I agree a lot of BR weights are from when the player first came up, (although some appear to be from later in career too). I did mention I don't think Vlad Jr. is only 250 right now though. I could be wrong.
