WaPo: Boswell—Zimmerman says he’s ready to move to left field

“I’ve come to some self-realizations. I’ll be the first to say it. I’ve never shied away from the truth. The last two years have been rough for me [at third base]. I’ve had to do an excess of work to be able to do what I used to do naturally,” said Zimmerman, alone at his locker. “People keep asking me if six weeks off will help my [surgically repaired] shoulder. Six weeks off? Go six years back, maybe. It’s tough. It’s bone and joint.

“I’m comfortable playing wherever it helps the team. That’s why we’re all here. Down the road,” he said, not specifying whether that was in days or years, “left field is probably better than first base for me.”

When a player starts talking introspectively like that, the move is inevitable.

It’s a shame.  At his best, his defense was jaw dropping.  Earlier in his career before the arm troubles, what made him stand out wasn’t just the range and reflexes—he’s always had amazingly soft hands, starting low, scooping high—but his throwing.  He was as aggressive a thrower as I’ve seen, almost always going for the lead runner, creating an awful lot of fielder’s choices and surprise double plays.  I don’t think the defensive stats really captured that in terms of his value, but those hidden sorts of plays really add up over a season.

How does having a bum arm in left field help? 1B sounds better.

Wouldn't call it it a bum arm. He can throw and at times he can throw well. It's more of a fragile arm.

I remember seeing him start at SS at RFK. I knew him by reputation only and expected it to be an ugly butcher job, but he looked better than adequate. Chris is right that he had the total package of fluidity, instincts and soft hands to go with the arm.

And then what will he do when Harper comes back?

Werth and/or Harper will see some time in CF, Span is the odd man out, although it sounds like Zimmerman will get some time at 1st, and even 3rd.
