WaPo: Dave Martinez to Manage Nationals

The Washington Nationals have agreed to a deal with former Cubs bench coach Davey Martinez to become their next manager, and are finalizing the details of what will be a three-year deal with an option for a fourth, according to a person familiar with the situation….

Martinez gives the Nationals a different look — a fresher face than Baker or Davey Johnson, but a more relaxed leader than Williams. He is fluent in Spanish, well-versed in advanced analytics and multiple Nationals players have spoken highly of him.

ROBOT MANAGERS NOW!!!

Also: is it Dave or Davey? The latter is problematic.

I'll post this bit of NL East managers' gossip here rather than trying to give it its own thread:

Gabe Kapler to get Phillies' job.

Kapler is considered to be analytics driven with a fondness for sports science. Those are two important areas for Philadelphia's management group.

General manager Matt Klentak said he wanted a manager with a new voice and new style to lead the Phillies into contention

Lopes wasn't the finest of skippers, but Johnson had a helluva run.

And I always had a soft spot for the Mormon kid in the Sunday morning claymation series.

Edit: Wiki says Lutheran. I coulda sworn the closing credits thanked the Latter Day Saints.

Well, if they were going to can Baker, I'm happy it's Martinez. He deserves a shot.

Rizzo, speaking from Pravda HQ at the Kremlin, says the Nats want more focus on analytics. That has a familiar ring.

Also, they wouldn't go beyond 2 years with Dusty while D-Mart gets 3 years.

Probably because two years of Dusty is even salary against three years of Martinez.

Well, there's five years of religious indoctrination down the drain.

I think his "official" baseball name was always "Dave" -- i.e. his baseball card, encyclopedia entry, etc. I'm pretty sure would all say Dave as does his b-r page today. B-R doesn't even list "Davey" as a nickname. But my memory is his teammates called him Davey ... but then teammates are lazy with nicknames and "Marty" wasn't going to work so they had no choice but "Davey." I assume Cindy Sandberg called him Big Dave.

I see he came out of community college -- anybody know if he ever got a college degree? Just curious how many managers these days don't have one (probably a lot more than I'd guess). And at just 5'10", will his players respect him? :-)

If they don't they'll have to answer to Altuve!

D-Mart

Please, just don't post that again. Those hyphenated names are one of the scourges of the 21st century which will eventually be the downfall of civilisation as we know it.

Good hiring by the Nationals though, Martinez is pretty well respected around the place.

That's crazy. Who doesn't remember those great baseball nicknames of the past, like Yankees slugger G-Ru, or fabled Bostonian T-Wil?

Not to mention G-Ru's teammate LOU-GE.

Seriously, if a nickname is warranted then come up with something decent. The kid, splendid splinter, crime dog, big hurt, the man, iron horse, grey eagle, bambino, big unit, etc. etc. etc. There have been some glorious nicknames in the past, no reason new ones can't be discovered by chance or some other means.

Patrick Ewing, for one, agrees with you.

Just speaking for myself, I use ARod, VMart, etc. usually for two reasons. (1) it's a common surname so I need to specify which one anyway and (2) it's a reasonably long surname and I'm tired of typing it. Granted, once I've gotten used to using it, (1) is not much of a consideration.

So yes, once upon a time I probably typed out Frank Robinson and Brooks Robinson. Then it was F Robinson or Brooks (usually), lately it's been FRob which saves me dozens of keystrokes per year!

Indeed, Aurelio Rodriguez and Victor Marte are two of my favorites as well.
