WaPo: The Return Of Lo Duca Has a Catch (RR)

When Paul Lo Duca’s stint on the disabled list formally ends this week, he’ll supply the Washington Nationals’ roster with a third catcher—and a dilemma. Lo Duca, who was hurt May 7, is the team’s highest-paid catcher, but has thus far been its least productive at the plate, batting .200 in 50 at-bats.
...
The starter? Twenty-three-year-old Jesús Flores, who leads all regulars in batting and slugging, calling smart ballgames and playing with a composure that belies his age.
...
The backup? Wil Nieves. He signed a minor league deal in the offseason—a move that claimed little attention compared with Washington’s signings of Lo Duca and Johnny Estrada—but has since proven more beneficial. Nieves is batting .284, having hit safely in 12 of his last 15 starts.

At least for the near future, Washington will keep all three catchers on its roster, Manager Manny Acta said. Flores, however, is the clear starter.
...
Lo Duca will receive at-bats not just as a backup catcher, but also as a first baseman and a left fielder this week. The Nationals no doubt hope that he performs well enough to gain value at the trading deadline, or even regain the form that prompted Washington to sign him to a one-year, $5 million contract last December.

Lo Duca has actually played more outfield than I had expected, looking at his career stats, although he hasn’t played there since 2004.

Paul Lo Duca as a first baseman? I demand the head and all the severed limbs of whatever unacceptable waste of oxygen is responsible for this. Now.

or even regain the form that prompted Washington to sign him to a one-year, $5 million contract last December.

So once Blow Duca starts slugging .378, the Nats will move him right back into the starting role.

Remember when the LoDuca trade was (partly) responsible for getting DePodesta fired in LA? What a damn shame. Maybe the LA Times will revisit that deal, "Where are they now?"

Remember when the LoDuca trade was (partly) responsible for getting DePodesta fired in LA?

But that's because of what LoDuca brought to the clubhouse. He gave his teammates strength.

Ouch, walt. It's funny because it's true, but still... ouch.

Wil Nieves is hitting .284? IN 64 ABS? How the #### does that happen?

He's finally free from the intense scrutiny of the New York media.

And he had a walkoff homer in a game I worked.

So, based on both how the players are doing and project, in ten years will Mets fans have more regret for:
a) The Kazmir deal, or
b) The Flores Rule 5 pick

Inquiring minds want to know!
   11. Benji Posted: June 16, 2008 at 04:52 AM (#2820981)
Well, it won't be for letting LoDuca go.

Where will Johnny Estrada play?
   13. Raskolnikov Posted: June 16, 2008 at 04:58 AM (#2820990)
The Kazmir deal, easily. Kazmir has HOF talent, Flores has a ceiling of occasional All-Star, IMHO.
   14. RJ in TO Posted: June 16, 2008 at 05:01 AM (#2820996)
Yeah, but the Mets got Zambrano back for Kazmir. That's gottta be worth something, right?

On a more serious note, isn't there always going to be concern with respect to Kazmir's motion? While he may have HOF talent, isn't the more likely scenario an arm-blowout?
   15. PASTE is not impressed by Albert Pujols (Zeth) Posted: June 16, 2008 at 05:02 AM (#2820997)
Sure, but what made the Zambrano deal so mind-bending atrocious is that the Rays raped the Mets on that deal even if Scott Kazmir's arm turns green and falls off tomorrow morning and he never pitches ever again.

Or more to the point, absent that deal, the 2007 Mets would have won the NL East by 2 or 3 games.
   16. Benji Posted: June 16, 2008 at 05:07 AM (#2821000)
The day after the Zambrano and Benson deals, I brought my father to his Walmart greeter job and this Met fan we knew (I'll call him Ike because, well, that's his name) was thrilled with the development. My father opined that Kazmir was a great prospect and Oracle Ike yelled at him that prospects were worthless and they got "two excellent big league starters!" for the young guys and "that's how you win". And believe it or not, those were not the dumbest things he said. He told me in 2002 Spring Training that Mo Vaughn would be the MVP and Robbie Alomar the batting champion, and a month before that Stephon Marbury was the only PG that could lead the Knicks to a title.

That's something I've been pushing for one of these worthless owners to do for years. If the Wilpons really wanted to make a smart investment, they'd hire somebody to get buddy-buddy with Ike, and anytime they were considering a move, the mole could run it past Ike. If Ike loves the idea, they can confidently stick it in the circular file. Who loses?
   18. 6 - 4 - 3 Posted: June 16, 2008 at 05:37 AM (#2821028)
You know, even with his miserable 2008 (albeit only in 50 AB), Lo Duca's 49 OPS+ is still outhitting the Nationals' LFers that are available to play the position everyday so far this year:

Pena: 29 OPS+, 143 PA
Harris: 46 OPS+, 52 PA
Mackowiak: 56 OPS+, 35 PA (released last week)
Lopez: 76 OPS+, 24 PA (normally the SS)
Langerhans: 33 OPS+, 17 PA
Dukes: 10 OPS+, 10 PA (normally the RF)
Casto: -100 OPS+, 4 PA

Combined, that's a 37 OPS+ from LF!!! That's pretty incredible when you think about it. Not that the Nats shouldn't try to do better, but it's not like Lo Duca (as pathetic as he is) will be taking AB's away from a more productive hitter.

The Mets front office were just lazy on the Flores fiasco. They assumed that Flores was not eligible to be picked. All they needed to do was tell an intern to call the Commissioner's Office and confirm, instead they lost a young catching prospect.

I have no way of knowing whether that's actually true, but let me tell you this, dog, if I'm owning a business worth like 750 million ****** dollars, and the guys I'm paying six figures to run this business are too lazy to make a ####### phone call, I'm going to fire them, and then rehire them the next day just so I can fire them again.

Stephon Marbury was the only PG that could lead the Knicks to a title

Actually this is true ... and the Knicks are now doomed to abject failure for the rest of eternity.

It doesn't matter who the pitcher is, the more likely scenario is always the arm-blowout.

The thing Benji isn't telling us is that Ike went on to have a quite a successful run as an ESPN analyst.

I've been in an NL only keeper Roto League for 15 years, about 9 of the owners are extremely stable, the other 3 change some time, twice we've had an Oracle Ike type take over a team...

It doesn't last long, they overbid on name players, scoff when anyone bids on a player they haven't heard about... and they then go on to finish last (or close to it), and quit...

I think a lot of what's been derided on BBTF as "prospect love", comes from keeper league fantasy players- anyone whose been in a keeper league for awhile has:
A: Been burned when an expensive vet ages prematurely
B: Has seen a much cheaper no-name player deliver star performance.

The roto player starts getting a different perspective than the average fan, so when the average fan wants to trade "prospects" for an established player, the keeper league fan tends to argue back- and both sides solidify in their positions...

If every owner operated this way there would be a lot of unemployed people.
