Was the Baseball Hall of Fame Sending a Message with Babe Ruth’s Plaque?

The inscription on Jack Morris’ plaque is four times as long as that of Babe Ruth. But really, that’s not the worst of it: Bud Selig’s testament is longer than Jackie Robinson’s. And that seems… not great.

I think those shorter entries was because they didn't NEED a longer description.

You don't need to explain to anyone why Babe Ruth is in the Hall of Fame. Jack Morris, OTOH, may need a bit of justification.

Having not seen Selig's plaque, does it go into any more detail than

-- Set new standards in shamelessly extorting millions of dollars from member cities, coupled with vigorous anti-marketing of MLB and game's greatest stars
-- Allowed steroid mania to flourish under his watch, necessitating Congressional grandstanding before doing anything
-- Cancelled 1994 playoffs
-- Responsible for wild card "excitement" and interleague play
-- Called All-Star Game as a tie because both teams ran out of pitchers, directly enabling THIS TIME IT COUNTS
-- Spiderman bases

-- Spiderman bases

AAAAAAAUUUUUGGGHHHHH.

This is my pet peeve. There are a great many reasons to dislike and even outright hate Bud Selig. But...THE SPIDERMAN BASES IS A THING THAT NEVER HAPPENED!!! Yes it was discussed, yes it was going to happen but MLB responded to the outcry and didn't do it.

The mere public consideration of Spiderman bases opened the door for such nonsense as Rob Manfred floating trial balloons for ghost runners on base to start extra innings. Reason enough to be held against Selig as future commissioners try to out-evil Selig in order to leave their own individual stamps on the game.

They had no idea of the cultural significance that these plaques would gain over the ensuing decades.
I had no idea of it either.

It's a thing that almost happened.

The original class was only 8 or so members, wasn't it? You don't need that many words to distinguish Babe Ruth from 7 other guys.

Ruth, Cobb, Wagner, Mathewson, and Johnson. Eighty years later, three of those original five still make the top of the list for all-time best at their position and the other two are awfully close.

Agree with #1. Babe Ruth's plaque had 27 words? It only needed two- Babe Ruth.
