Washington Nationals: Skipper Jim Riggleman On XM With Rob Dibble

Q: Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez? What do you expect? Will he mentor catchers or pitchers?

Jim Riggleman: “Well, he’ll do both. I think he’s taken on that a little bit in the last couple years on clubs that he’s been on, whereas in the past that wasn’t part of his game, but I think he will mentor some other players. I think he’ll give us an air of confidence with our pitchers when they look in and see who’s back there, but, you know, he’s still a good player, he’s not just a senior citizen on the club. This guy can block balls, throws the ball very well, he’s an athlete back there and he kind of puts in the mind to the other ballclub that you just can’t get on and go. We’ve got a chance to stop your running game. If our pitcher gives him any chance at all, he can throw people out and he’s a good hitter. I only saw Pudge in games that we played against him, but the last couple years that I saw him, I actually commented to him a couple times through the last couple years that he really was swinging into some bad luck? He was hitting a lot of balls right on the barrel, right at people, and that’s just the way it goes sometimes. All you can do is try to hit the ball hard in our game and his numbers are not bad, offensively he’s still a productive hitter, but he can’t continue to hit into that kind of bad luck, cause this guy hit a lot of “at’em” balls…”

Cappydick wants to know if there is any truth to this…

Pudge turned 38 in November, and he has 2711 hits in his career. How many hits will he have when his current 2-year deal with the Nats expires, and will a team give him another couple years to limp to 3000 as a pure bench player?

I'd place the over/under at 180 hits on a 2 year deal. (That's total, not per year). I don't see Pudge on the Nats' Zips page.

He is a good hitter, if by "is" you mean "was".

And what's a difference between a coach and a "mentor" anyway? Frankly, the mentor stuff sounds like a lot of flapdoodle to me.

For what it's worth, Favorite Toy gives him 2,929 hits for his career, with a 26% chance of reaching 3,000.

A "coach" tells you how to do something. A "mentor" shows you how to do it.

I get him with a 9% chance at 3000.

I can't see why they wouldn't. The offensive standard for backup catchers is ridiculously low. Just picking out backup catchers that the Cubs have had, because they're the team I'm most familiar with, Henry Blanco has a career OPS+ of 67, Koyie Hill has a career OPS+ of 51, and Paul Bako (finally retired, I think) with a career OPS+ of 62.

By comparison, Pudge was at 73 last year. With his defensive reputation, he'd probably have to drop that another 20 points and hold it there for a couple of years for nobody to be willing to hire him as a backup catcher. The question is whether he'll be interested in hanging around long enough to crawl up to 3,000 hits getting 40 hits per season.

While I remember somebody signed Pudge, I don't think it sunk in that it was the Nats. Riggleman here seems to be talking of him as if he's the starter -- what's happened with Flores?

The last I heard, they were talking as though they expected him to be 100% ready by spring training, but that was several weeks ago. I suppose we'll find out for real how the elbow is in a couple of weeks or so.

Rodriguez ZIPS is on the Rangers page

ZIPS has him at 2906 career hits.

pudge is riding on a reputation he earned 10 years ago. both with receiving ability and hitting - he couldn't outhit humberto freaking quintero and he had 4 errors (should have been easy twice that - his blocking ability is long gone and there were far too many WP given that should have been PB)

I still think Cappy Dick was buried underneath Epcot Center by Slylock Fox.

I would peg his interest in hanging around long enough at 100%. I think he mentions this every other interview. Google "ivan rodriguez goal 3,000"

Did you know Ivan Rodriguez holes little boy returns 9160 hits on google? Who knew that was a goal for him?
