Washington Post: After Bravura Debut, Acta Faces Follow-Up (RR)

In other news, the Mets are apparently working on a trade that will send Acta back to New York in exchange for Willie and $30MM in cash considerations.

“He took command of the team the minute he stepped in the locker room,” [Nationals President Stan] Kasten said. “He’s a no-nonsense kind of guy, in terms of what he demands, but he’s supportive of everyone on his team. He doesn’t tolerate not playing the right way, but he makes it fun to play the right way, and do it together.”

There may not be another manager in baseball for whom it can be said: He is immune from criticism. In a game where every columnist, blogger and talk-radio caller must have a strong opinion or be unheard, it is virtually impossible to recall something bad that has been said or written about Acta. Even Acta himself, who ought to know, could not come up with an example of his being criticized.

“It’ll come,” he said. “We had such low expectations, it helped me in the first year—because people were expecting so little. People who know about the game saw the way we handled our bullpen, and way we handled our team—regardless of the talent—and knew we knew how to handle the team, which was 90 percent of the job.

Well...I thought it was a good story worth posting.

Maybe if you hadn't snarked so hard at Willie to start. ;-)

No, wait, that should have brought out all kinds of people.

Who knows?

I'm working under the assumption that it's a dividend, not a bonus.

That was indeed my diabolical strategy. I am a PRIMATE MADE OF FAIL.

I would make the trade if it were 10M or a B level prospect. Acta for Willie + 10M.

Rask once said that Acta was worth 1/4th of Johan Santana.

Am I the only Met fan around here that doesn't think Willie is a complete idiot?
   8. Esoteric Posted: February 23, 2008 at 12:43 AM (#2697723)
1/4th? Nah...actually, I have no idea how you'd even quantify that value. But the WaPo article really doesn't exaggerate. Nobody and I mean NOBODY in the Nationals' universe - players, commentators, average fans, or hectoring bloggers alike - is sour on Acta. Even Chris Needham, the Nats' resident blog sourpuss, likes him.

That said, it'll be interesting to see what happens this year, especially in terms of balancing out the tough decisions that will need to be made at 1B (Young v. Johnson), 2B (Belliard v. Lopez), and SS (Guzman v. Lopez). The FO will probably help matters by getting rid of at least some of our overage, but there will be egos to balance here.

I find it hard to believe that anyone in this solar system would pick Guzman over Lopez. Acta may be a good manager, but benching Lopez in favor of either Guzman or Belliard is dumb... and yes, I know Lopez sucked last year.

Lopez has a rep of not caring. He makes a lot of mental mistakes and doesn't seem to get a lot out of his talent. Sometimes I think it is OK to bench guys like that to prove a point to the rest of the team.

I'm not a Mets fan, but I don't think Willie is a complete idiot. I was actually very high on him until partway through last season. That's been tempered somewhat.
