Washington Post: Nats Deny Report of Talks With Mazzone (RR)

Nationals President Stan Kasten strongly denied a Washington Post report tonight that the team has had had conversations with former Atlanta Braves and Baltimore Orioles pitching coach Leo Mazzone about serving in the same role in Washington.

“There is not a scintilla of truth to this story,” Kasten said.

According to an industry source familiar with the talks, the Nationals have discussed their pitching coach job with Mazzone, whom Kasten knows from their days together with the Atlanta Braves.

Although current Nationals pitching coach Steve McCatty does not have the “interim” label attached to his title - as interim general manager Mike Rizzo and interim manager Jim Riggleman do - the Nationals have not committed to McCatty in that role beyond this season.

Why not make him the manager?

People in the DC/Baltimore area are still traumatized by the Ray Miller experience.

Nats angrily deny reports that they are about to make a smart decision.

Wow; not even a scintilla of truth. That probably puts the chances of talks already have occurred at what, between 80% and 90%?

Please. This is the Nationals. That puts the chances of talks already having occured at 100%, with an 80% chance that a Leo Mazzone was hired last week (and a 50% chance that the person they hired was only pretending to be Leo Mazzone).

With Kasten, you have to completely parse everything.

So if there's NOT a scintilla or tiny portion correct, it means that that the whole could be correct. That Kasten, he's a tricky man!

The Nationals' front office is beginning to remind me of the Nixon White House, as depicted in the film of All the President's Men.

They deny everything, then it happens anyway. Cue teletype machine:

... MAZZONE SIGNS WITH NATIONALS ... WILL JOIN CLUB AS PITCHING COACH ... TERMS NOT DISCLOSED ...

Maybe they should have sold the team to the Malek group after all.

I always read "scintilla" as "chinchilla." I wish Kasten had said the latter.
