Washington Times: Picks still unsigned

With just more than a month to go before the Aug. 15 deadline, the Nationals still do not have any of their first five picks from the June draft in the fold. And according to a source close to one of those picks, the team could have trouble signing several of them.

The source said the Nationals front office has been given a directive by ownership not to give any of the picks a larger signing bonus than MLB’s slot system recommends. All of those picks are believed to be looking for above-slot signing bonuses.

“I spoke with [scouting director] Dana Brown recently, and he sounded absolutely devastated,” the source said. “I’m actually kind of stunned they’re doing this.”

According to the source, the team is prepared to take “a hard line” with first-rounder Aaron Crow. “It’s ‘If he doesn’t want to play for this, we’ll take the 10th pick next year,’” the source said, referring to the compensatory selection Washington would get if it did not sign Crow, who was taken ninth in this spring’s draft.

I'm beginning to understand how Pirates fans must feel.

And I thought suffering through the Mariners' 2004 was bad enough.

Wouldn't the folks running the draft know this going in? I am constantly baffled that this happens time and again in MLB. If ownership didn't want the Nats to draft players that would cost more than the slot, then why screw the team by waiting until after the draft to make this known? Or, if money is such an issue, then why not avoid signing folks like Da Meathook to play first base and use that money for the draft?

Money's NOT an issue. That's the problem. They've got money coming out of their ears. They just want more, More, MORE!!!

I know where I can get some tar... anyone know where I can pick up some synthetic goose feathers?

Now, if they'd let Bowden take a cut from their signing bonuses, all 5 would be under control by tomorrow morning.

oh yeah they gonna look REAL good they don't sign their first 5 picks

they can go talk to drayton about it.

then they need to sign guys who are much lousier than slot level so they'll just have warm bodies.

and i shtt you not astros fans are really REALLY believing that our newest draft pick can be called up to help the big club by next september. based on his good character.

sigh

I shed no tears for the Nationals. The gods have woken and they are not pleased that Bowden has been stealing from other teams. The Nats will continue to suffer misery until they return Flores to his rightful team.

Don't they realize that given the Nationals' horribly weak status, this team has to work twice as hard to get half as far? Strict adherence to the slot may make the Lerners popular at owners' meetings, but it will backfire for this organization. At this rate, Strasburg will pull a J.D. Drew next year if the Nationals have the #1 overall pick.

I've had a 20-game plan since the team arrived, and I'm seriously thinking of not renewing for '09. That's how disgusted I am.

And Raskolnikov, shut up with your Flores rants; you're a broken record. We'll give you Flores if you give us a team in the thick of a pennant race.

Maybe this is a part of why they have roughly 9,000 fans a game watching on tv...and no more.

This is just posturing. My goodness. They've all been through this dance before.

Alabama will have no problem taking Destin Hood off their hands.

Rasky is not giving up on this one. He is in it for the long haul.

'Bama already lost Melvin Ray to the Dodgers. So yes, I agree.

I figure we would lose someone and Melvin Ray also had some grade questions, we over-signed anyway and WR is loaded with young talent, but Hood would be a nice addition.
