Watch A Student-Made Robot Throw the First Pitch at a Diamondbacks Game

We need to have a serious discussion about the “first pitch” of a baseball game, because it has been getting exponentially more ridiculous lately. First dinosaurs, then cats, and now robots?

1. A robot may not injure a human being, unless he's crowding the plate.
2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except for Grady Little.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the laws of the MLBPA.

Isn't a pitching machine technically a robot?

When the robots rise up, I sure hope not. A pitching machine robot could be a deadly menace.

This thread needs more Gaelan.

I was thinking the same thing. A very simple program to write.

I wouldn't have thought a robot would be gritty enough for the Snakes.

The robot was taken for an MRI after the game which revealed a torn UCL. It will be undergoing Tommy John Surgery next week and hopes to be back online by next May.

I assume that it will be a donor ligament from a cadaver, making it the first zombie-robot to throw out a first pitch.

This was really a secret tryout for the D Backs Rotation

What does Gaelan think about robots?

This thread has been up for several hours and still no one has bothered to notice that the robot doesn't look at all like Ray?

This only happened after Kirk Gibson demanded the robot give him the "hundred pitches" the robot owed him. The robot was fine until pitch 65, but then struggled to get out of the inning as a light drizzle slowly rusted his arm joint. The actual injury occurred on pitch 93 when the joint jammed.

When the attending mechanic told the robot not to worry, that he would be back in the rotation in no time, the robot was heard to cry, "dismantle me now please!"

I would have to assume he would take them as a harbinger of the end of civilization, right? Or a sign that civilization has already ended?

Gaelan is strongly against transhumanism.

Aww, I was hoping it'd actually throw. Can't really see the mechanism but it didn't look like a throw. Catapult?

Might not have been a first but definitely a FIRST judging by the red bumpers at the base.
IIRC during the championships in St. Louis in the Rams' stadium last month, none of the several hundred machines were invited to the Cardinals' game but it was revealed that Cards' Kolten Wong was an alumnus of one of the HS teams there.
