Watchdog: Best: LaTroy Hawkins is cool with hitters juicing up

LaTroy makes try these good…swing, Americans!

New Yankee LaTroy Hawkins appeared on Sirius Satellite Radio and had an interesting take on the steroids saga in MLB:

Host Jason Page: “You’re stepping into this Yankee fray. It’s going to be kind of an awkward time. You know in the pre-season especially there are going to be all the questions about what Roger Clemens did, Andy Pettitte did and all that stuff. How do you kind of side-step that stuff when the media comes to you on it?”

LaTroy Hawkins: “It’s not any of my business. First of all the thing is I don’t care. Only person cared about that was [Commissioner Bud] Selig. I don’t care about it. That’s just my own personal opinion.”

Page: “You don’t care if hitters are juicing up?”

Hawkins: “No, I don’t. That’s just my personal opinion. Still got to hit the ball, brother.”

Looking at the comments so far, I am guessing it is past the bed time of most Cubs fans ..

..

When Hawkins spent a partial season with the Giants a few years ago, he didn't pitch very well. But the broadcasters Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper both made repeated mention of what a cool guy they found him to be, a serious student of baseball and an unusually engaging guy to talk with.

Headline: "LaTroy Hawkins whips out opinion on steroids"

As a Minnesota-native Cubs fan, I can tell you exactly why LaTroy Hawkins doesn't give a damn about guys juicing up. Because when LaTroy's pitching the 7th and 8th, he can get even the most roided-up he-man slugger out. And when he's pitching the 9th, the AAAA'er who will never stay in the big leagues because he absolutely refuses to break the rules can and will take Hawkins deep when the game is on the line.

This will be fine and good until somebody hits the ball, brother in a really important game or something.

I'd read a blog authored by Hawkins. He is the anti-Schilling in so many ways! He'd write one sentence posts that get right to the point. Hopefully, they'd always end in the word "brother".

I do think the interviewers asked him the wrong question. Perhaps, Hawkins would be less cavalier in his response if the he was asked about his feelings about other middle relievers juicing.

.

How the hell did Hawkins get a word in edgewise against these two?

I to this day feel bad about how things turned out for Hawkins in Chicago. I just think about how much it would suck to go to the team you rooted for your whole life and becoming the most hated man in the city. He to this day will bring out some of the most hated response from a Cubs fan if you bring him up.

The worst I felt for him was on his return visit to Chicago as a Giant. Was booed mercilessly from the second he came trotting in from the bullpen. Alou used him in all 3 games of the series, and in all 3 Hawkins either gave up the tie or the lead. It was brutal, and just cruel or clueless of Alou.

I also thought it was pretty cool during that windstorm this year that was blowing up the tarp that Hawkins was the one Rockie out there holding it down.
