Watchdog: Best: Tony Kubek calls Charles Finley ‘egotistical’ (Video)

Plus…Abe Beame and a soft Lindsey Nelson jacket!

The highlight of this pre-game clip from the 1973 World Series comes about three minutes in, when Tony Kubek bluntly hammers Athletics owner Charles Finley in a fashion difficult to imagine from any current sideline reporter.

Then Catfish Hunter and Tom Seaver pile on!

Plus, Tony gets Seaver to handle the mike for him, as Curt Gowdy notes afterward.

Great stuff.

More unreal Met clips.

That was awesome.

Let's see, Seaver is a ##### since he doesn't think a starter could go three times in the WS after pitching the last game before the season started. And what about him and Hunter being all cuddly wuddly like that? I thought that before they were all pampered millionaires, the players on opposing teams hated each other unequivocally. I thought that pitchers being pussies and players being friends is why the game sucks.

Oh, wow.
What a leading question from Kubek - and Cat jumps all over it!

I think I remember watching that.

[The fans] probably want to see us instead of the other pitchers...

Catfish wasn't the modest type, I take it. Of course, these days the answer to that question would be write from the Bull Durham playbook: "I'm just happy to be here, we got some good pitchers, and the team winning is the important thing."

That wasn't what I got out of Kubek's question at all. He was obviously lamenting the fact that the scheduling didn't allow for more of a lag time between the two LCS and the World Series. If Kubek had meant it to be a slam at the two pitchers' manhood, he would've pressed the matter further, but his complaint was about the schedule, not the pitchers.

One year later Catfish Hunter got sick of Charlie Finley's ego, got an arbitrator to make him a free agent and signed a five year deal to work for the most modest, pleasant, ego-free owner in the history of sports: George Steinbrenner.

Andy, I didn't get that out of Kubek's question either. I was attempting to ridicule the way some people today lament that players used to be different than they are now and that today it's just a big country club. Poor effort, and when I couldn't phrase it right, I should have just not said anything at all.

Yesterday, Hawk Harrelson was saying on WGN that the players today are better and in better shape than the ones when he was playing. I was pleased to hear that, even though it was in the midst of a tirade against pitch counts. But he was making a clear distinction between players' abilities and desire and strategic development.

Actually, one year later Finley violated the terms of Hunter's contract. He wasn't so much sick of Finley's ego as he was sick of not getting paid.
