WBC CHATTER: Taipei vs. Korea 4:30 AM EST 3-6-09 on ESPN2

In about 8 and a half hours (I’m submitting this at 8ish to ensure it goes up in time) the second game of the second WBC will take place. LIVE from the Tokyo Dome it’s…..

Korea vs. Taiwan/Chinese Taipei/Formosa

Chin-Soo-Choo, the only MLB player in this game, will be relegated to DHing for Korea due to injury.

I’ll see you Friday Morning! WBC Fever*! Catch it!

(symptoms of WBC fever include insomnia, enhanced interest in obscure Minor Leaguers, the European Leagues and the strange sensation of referring to Nick Punto as a “Ringer”.)

I'll be on for most of this one. Hope my wife doesn't mind.
   2. Lassus Posted: March 06, 2009 at 10:33 AM (#3094231)
Well, this worked out well, as I just got in from a midnight showing of Watchmen and 90 minutes on the subways, which don't run so quick at 4 AM.

I wonder if Gamingboy will wake up.
   3. Lassus Posted: March 06, 2009 at 10:41 AM (#3094233)
I don't know who to root for here. Korea has an insane neighbor, and Taiwan has a bigger, scarier neighbor.

OK, Taiwan is smaller and the underdog, I'm rooting for them.
   4. Flynn Posted: March 06, 2009 at 10:42 AM (#3094234)
I really like the new MLB media player. It'll be fun to see how it will work when they release the full version with nexdef. The idea of listening to the Red Sox radio while watching the game is awesome.
   5. Lassus Posted: March 06, 2009 at 10:48 AM (#3094235)
This game would have been REALLLY easy to get tickets to. Lots of empty seats.
   6. Lassus Posted: March 06, 2009 at 10:51 AM (#3094236)
Uh-oh. That's not a good start.
   7. Dan Evensen Posted: March 06, 2009 at 10:56 AM (#3094237)
Just got off work, and Korea's already up by 2. That's before I can even open up the video feed.
   8. Dan Evensen Posted: March 06, 2009 at 10:57 AM (#3094238)
He made that catch look harder than it was.
   9. Dan Evensen Posted: March 06, 2009 at 10:59 AM (#3094239)
Nice on the OPS stat reference, play-by-play guy.
   10. Lassus Posted: March 06, 2009 at 11:01 AM (#3094240)
Uh-oh. I sense mercy rule.
   11. Flynn Posted: March 06, 2009 at 11:01 AM (#3094241)
That was absolutely tattooed.
   12. Dan Evensen Posted: March 06, 2009 at 11:01 AM (#3094242)
I've got a feeling that this is going to be a mercy rule game. He CREAMED that one.
   13. Lassus Posted: March 06, 2009 at 11:06 AM (#3094243)
Nice play!
   14. Dan Evensen Posted: March 06, 2009 at 11:07 AM (#3094244)
Very nice play.
   15. Lassus Posted: March 06, 2009 at 11:07 AM (#3094245)
Eeeeep. That looked like it might have been safe.
   16. Dan Evensen Posted: March 06, 2009 at 11:08 AM (#3094246)
Hmm -- looked safe on the replay.
   17. Baldrick Posted: March 06, 2009 at 11:09 AM (#3094247)
I think that call at second may have been an unofficial mercy rule.
   18. Baldrick Posted: March 06, 2009 at 11:14 AM (#3094248)
I don't agree with the announcers. Wouldn't the best way to sell a burgeoning game in Taiwan be to have their very best players go so they don't get mercy-ruled out of their games against Korea and Japan and so they have a good chance of sticking it to the PRC?

It certainly seems to make more sense than for all the teams to hold onto their best players for two weeks and have Taiwan crash and burn in this thing.
   19. Dan Evensen Posted: March 06, 2009 at 11:25 AM (#3094249)
Nice video. Boy, I'd give a lot to be able to watch classic Japan Series games. Or ANY Japanese games, for that matter.
   20. Dan Evensen Posted: March 06, 2009 at 11:57 AM (#3094250)
Boy, this game has really quieted down. The announcers are putting me to sleep. It's not Buck - McCarver, but I feel like it is.
   21. Dan Evensen Posted: March 06, 2009 at 12:08 PM (#3094251)
I was always under the impression that Taiwan played as "China" in the Little League World Series back in the 1960s, when they started to dominate. I'm not old enough to remember, though.
   22. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: March 06, 2009 at 12:18 PM (#3094256)
I LOLed
   23. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: March 06, 2009 at 12:19 PM (#3094257)
I just e-mail my buddy who works for the Taipei Times, I told him the headline tomorrow should be "Michael Phelps named Taiwan Baseball Head Coach"

Because I'm pretty sure these f!@3s are going to have to swim back here.
   24. Dan Evensen Posted: March 06, 2009 at 12:20 PM (#3094258)
I didn't know you had a connection at the Taipei Times, Wok. I like to read that paper once in a while, when I'm sick of reading the articles the KMT service sends to my email.

I don't think I can access the Taipei Times website in Qingdao, though.
   25. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: March 06, 2009 at 12:25 PM (#3094259)
I don't think I can access the Taipei Times website in Qingdao, though.

yeah, that paper is Green, so you can't get it there.

Btw, I've come up with a perfect plan to make Taiwan the dominant force in International Play in 25 years. It involves paying 25 current MLB players 1 million dollars to get 5 Taiwanese women pregnant.

I'm not a genetics expert, but I'm almost pretty F!@#ing sure that if Barry Bonds had 5 children with 5 different Taiwanese WOmen that were atheltically capable, the chances of at least 1 MLB all-star is not low.

The women won't be hard to find, i mean, it is Taiwan, "here's some money, F!@3 a forienger!" The economy is bad you know.
   26. Dan Evensen Posted: March 06, 2009 at 12:29 PM (#3094260)
It's not true, though, that you can't get anything green here. Green blogs hosted on blogspot come in fine. I'm reading "Taiwan Matters!" right now. The strategy behind China's internet censorship seems to be more random than anything else.

One of the guys I know who posts at "Taiwan Matters!" claims that the Taipei Times isn't green enough. He's one of the real radicals, who claims that the entire Taiwanese media is already hopelessly biased.

BTW, I like your ??? plan. My wife is from Taiwan. I guess I've done my part -- though I'm nowhere near the MLB All-Star level.

I hate to say it, but this game is insufferably boring.
   27. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: March 06, 2009 at 12:32 PM (#3094261)
He's one of the real radicals, who claims that the entire Taiwanese media is already hopelessly biased.

They're all hopeless in general.

My favourite media moment here EVER was when that piece of krap United Evening Paper had the headline "Taiwan beats China 7:3 in Extra Innings" when in fact we lost 8:7

   28. Dan Evensen Posted: March 06, 2009 at 12:35 PM (#3094263)
Hahaha -- that's a great headline. Boy, sure makes me miss the papers in Taiwan, though.
   29. Dan Evensen Posted: March 06, 2009 at 12:37 PM (#3094264)
I smell mercy rule!
   30. Dan Evensen Posted: March 06, 2009 at 12:52 PM (#3094265)
I thought that was going to be it. When this game's over, we're turning on ????????. Nothing better than a Korean soap opera to help us forget about Taiwan's WBC woes.
   31. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: March 06, 2009 at 12:57 PM (#3094267)
Nothing better than a Korean soap opera to help us forget about Taiwan's WBC woes.

I believe that Korean Dramas are the exact reason why Taiwanese Women are impossible to deal with.
   32. Dan Evensen Posted: March 06, 2009 at 01:01 PM (#3094268)
I'll remember to use that line the next time we have an argument ;-).

My wife is better than most Taiwanese women I've met, though. She's taken our extended (over 6 months now) trip to the mainland very well. My mother-in-law, on the other hand...
   33. Dan Evensen Posted: March 06, 2009 at 01:06 PM (#3094269)
My #24 is wrong. I can access the Taipei Times after all.
