i'd imagine a large country(like india) could outplay, say, new caledonia - even with a relative lack of experience.
africa also real light on representation
The WBC is great, but if it has one structural flaw, it's situations like the above, in which actual baseball-playing countries get left out while countries with few or no MLB or MiLB players — or MLB or MiLB players who are little more than ringers — get spots in the event.
If I was running this thing, I'd simply double the field to 32 teams (it was already at 28, including the qualifiers) and then start the event 7-10 days earlier, without holding any qualifying rounds months before. This would bring 16 additional teams into the actual event instead of playing in qualifiers that get little or no attention. It would also prevent situations like Brazil having its only ML player help the team qualify but then skip the actual event.
I think the main reason that there was that gameshow to find a pitcher was basically done on the idea that with so many people there must be SOMEBODY who can throw a ball relatively quick with some control. Really, they should try the same thing in China.

I would guess MLB would have preferred booking them on one flight, but they probably don't make reservations until teams are eliminated.
Yes, and given some of the good guys the MLB Academy has begun putting out (Correa, most notably), the PR may be on it's way back up again. It'll never be the factory of talent it once was, but it's not dead- and advancing out of the first round like they did this time will also help.
USA better come to play, because Los Boricuas sure will.
Although the fact that Italy is even there is proof that they can pull upsets, something tells me Italy is in deep trouble.
Well, just because...
C - Yadier Molina PR
1B - Joey Votto CAN
2B - Robinson Cano DR
SS - Alexi Ramirez - CUB
3B - Miguel Cabrera VEN
LF - Andruw Jones - NED
CF - Mike Trout USA
RF - Shin Soo Choo ROK
SP - Yu Darvish - JPN
An unfortunate consequence of which was that they arrived in the States with limited experience at playing catch.
edit: gee, thanks WJ
Here's the 2nd team:
C - Carlos Ruis - Panama
1B - Luke Hughes - Australia
2B - Donovan Solano - Colombia
3B - Jeff Baker - Germany
SS - Everth Cabrera - Nicaragua
OF - Alex Liddi - Italy
OF - Che-Hsuan Lin - Taiwan
OF - Antoan Richardson - Bahamas
SP - Justin Masterson - Jamaica
4-4 in the 6th!
It doesn't look good for the Honkbal 9, but they still have it tied up...
To be fair, I believe they gave Miami the games back when that stadium was new and a bright and shiny future was ahead, instead of the dystopia it has become. In other words: I blame Loria.
Dear Dutch pitchers,
You have the best defensive infield in the WBC.
A few more strikes will be appreciated.

Honkbal supporters
Really, bunting with Gourriel?!
EDIT : And that double play wakes up GamingBoy
At the very least he'd be a good bat.
And yeah, Bogaerts looked like the kid that he is. (This gets at what's so special about Trout and Harper - most 20-year-olds just don't have the baseball skills to face up against real professional pitchers.)
I think the East Asia WBC is a wonderful place to send a prospect. He faces real professional pitchers in competitive game situations. Bogaerts' struggles will show him what he still needs to learn. (He does have only three Ks so far, so he's at least been making contact.)
Heh if the Dutch win, Castro will for sure claim it is rigged
of the 2013 season!
You better hope your boss is not Steve Balboni's personal trainer
I feel like the Dutch can't escape much longer though. If they want to win, they need to do it soon.
Now someone photoshop a picture of his wife on baseballs pitched to Andruw
He just hit the pitch limit and is being taken out.
Think the Dutch are out of position players or something. They had a chance to pinch hit for their pitiful hitting catcher in the previous inning and didn't.
PASS THE DUTCHIES!!
#### YOU, COMMIES!!!!!!!
Mostly because of Simmons / Andruw.
But I feel bad for the Cubans too. They kind of dug their own grave though. Usually they have much better pitching.
Had chances in the 8th / 9th..and then that error by Gourriel.
Of course, but mainly because all of the braves curacao connections through the years.
Yurendell De Caster's injury seemed pretty severe. He might not be able to play in the next round, meaning the Dutch could call upon somebody to replace him....
I wonder if Jurickson Profar would be willing to change his mind?
