It didn't actually vote to become a state. They voted against maintaining the status quo, and on the same ballot there was a question as to what they should do if *not* that status quo. Most of the people who voted status quo didn't vote on that one, so in reality, most of the people who voted in Puerto Rico do *not* want Puerto Rico to become a state.

51 stars is no problem. It's 69 stars where we'd have to come up with a pattern that hasn't been used before on the flag. For 51 stars we could go with the Wyoming flag layout, which was made the official flag in 1890 after Wyoming had become a state until 1896, or it's successor the 45 star flag layout after Utah joined the union, which was the national flag from 1896 until 1907 when Oklahoma joined. I think it's pretty clear that the 45 star pattern is superior. Of course, I'm also for admitting DC. The Wyoming and 45 patterns work for that, but I'd prefer just taking the current pattern, switching the short and long lines, and adding 1 star to each line.

The anti-WBC people are letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. And the World Baseball Classic is a damn good tournament. A 'perfect' WBC would probably:

*Be during the actual baseball season, perhaps around the All-Star break;

*Run at least a month, with each of the teams playing at least ten games or more, to allow the best-quality teams to rise to the top. Baseball's not like soccer or football, where they play once a week;

*Strongly encourage the best players to play. (National pride? Lots o' money? Guarantee their MLB contracts if they get hurt? All the redheads they can carry?)

None of these things are realistic...at the moment. So instead, we've got a lot of really good ballplayers playing for their countries during spring training. And that's more than enough for me.

If I see one more person declare that the WBC is doomed if Team USA loses today, I might reach through the computer and choke somebody out. The amount of money that MLB is getting from the WBC is not something they will just throw away because some columnists and GMs are complaining.

I meant the "riot" as being figurative. No Latin American country would cut off the MLB stream, for example, barring some type of Cuba-esque closing.

And also, this is exhibit A as to why guy like Morosi (and possibly only Morosi) are wrong in saying the WBC is the end-all and be-all of determining what the best baseball country is: it's just too random of a game. Nelson Figueroa is having a great game on the same day Team USA is anemic at the plate. Italy got to the second round but teams like Venezuela, Korea and Mexico didn't because their players happened to have a good streak of games while the other three teams didn't. Panama didn't even qualify because Brazil had the week of their lives. David Wright's back got the Mets trainers attention....

So many moving parts, to say that the WBC is the sole determiner of the best baseball country is like saying that the lottery determines what the best set of numbers in the world is. It's a fun tournament that goes to whatever team has the best two or three weeks- not the be-all and end-all.

it's just too random of a game.

When I'm 80 I hope that every 4th year the pro leagues have a 120 game season instead of a full season so the 16 best countries can have a 30 game regular season and a 2 round seven game series. That gives the WBC 50 years to get to that point.

That sound you hear is a bunch of columnists declaring the WBC dead and/or declaring American baseball dead, or something.

And probably saying that the players didn't care. I'm sorry, the PLAYERS on Team USA DO CARE. It's the MANAGEMENT that is the issue. David Wright only left the team because the Mets forced him to, the relievers were being assigned their games just because that's what the teams were telling Torre. Victorino apparently had outright said he didn't care if he was being used as a back-up, he just wanted in, and yet he was starting in some games even before Wright went down... probably because Torre was thinking of the Red Sox.

I said back in 2009 that Bobby Valentine would be a good choice, but after the whole Boston debacle if he were to be the coach of Team USA the team would consist of David Wright and 27 minor leaguers.

It was closer than it looked in real time, but Rollins was out by a couple inches.

ETA: Figueroa was very, very slow to the plate, to the point that Sutcliffe was prescient by saying "a player with only average speed could steal easily on him, but you don't run with Yadier Molina behind the plate."

No, what the US team needs is for the WBC to occur at a time when everyone would take it seriously.

There is no way anyone is going to manage like it's Game 7 of the WS, because it's still spring training. And as long as the WBC remains part of spring training, it's not going to be a real tournament.

There is no way anyone is going to manage like it's Game 7 of the WS, because it's still spring training. And as long as the WBC remains part of spring training, it's not going to be a real tournament.

In a way, this has actually been better. Teams are much more ready to pull a starter than they would be midseason to go to the (large) bullpen. The real issue is that Torre is a ####### ####### who couldn't manage his way out of a paper bag.
