These guys do more with thunder sticks than Anaheim has ever done.
   102. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 03:32 AM (#4379533)
damnit, i thought that would be lucky dinker
   103. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 03:34 AM (#4379534)
Japan does something like that too, especially in highschool games, but Taiwan's does that on a pro level better.

Someone made a hoodie for GB: http://r.ebay.com/A0flUJ
   105. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 03:36 AM (#4379536)
$40.50 for a pre-owned? I think I'll wait a bit.
   106. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 03, 2013 at 03:38 AM (#4379537)
How about Aruba or Curacao for a venue next time. Or Hell, Amsterdam.
   107. Tschingsch Posted: March 03, 2013 at 03:40 AM (#4379538)
They're building a new stadium in the Netherlands, with the hopes of some MLB and WBC games.

Yeah, I've heard they are competing with Italy and Australia for the opening of the 2014 season, or something.
   109. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 03, 2013 at 03:42 AM (#4379540)
Andruw Jones hit 50 hrs in mlb, and here he is battling some no name hometown boy in Taiwan infront of a crazy crowd. This is why I love the WBC.
   110. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 03:43 AM (#4379541)
Pan is one of the best CPBL all time pitcher, though IIRC he's been injury plagued recently.

   111. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 03:43 AM (#4379542)
Yeah, I mean, remember when Andruw Jones was going to be the best Braves OF since Hank Aaron?
   112. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 03, 2013 at 03:44 AM (#4379543)
I just have a wierd feeling this game is going to be an all time wbc classic.
   113. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 03:44 AM (#4379544)
I love how everybody goes out of their way to call them "Chinese Taipei" with the whole separate flag and everything, yet the crowd is filled with people with ROC flags.
   114. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 03:47 AM (#4379545)
also, for those interested, here's the local Taiwan broadcast link
   115. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 03, 2013 at 03:48 AM (#4379546)
Explain to me the significance gamingboy. Why don't we just call them Taiwan? I know the ROC thing has something to do with a government in exile or something...
   116. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: March 03, 2013 at 03:50 AM (#4379547)
The political and legal statuses of Taiwan are contentious issues. The People's Republic of China (PRC) claims that the Republic of China government is illegitimate, referring to it as the "Taiwan Authority". The ROC, however, with its own constitution, independently elected president and armed forces, continues to view itself as a sovereign state. The present territory of the state has never been controlled by the PRC.[84][85] Internationally, there is controversy on whether the ROC still exists as a state or a defunct state per international law due to the loss of membership / recognition in the United Nations and lack of wide diplomatic recognition.

Does Netherlands have any position players from Holland?
   118. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 03:50 AM (#4379549)

There have been some instance of countries banning the ROC flag in games, but that's for another thread of why the world is a #####. if they ban that in Taiwan there's obviosuly going to be a riot.

   119. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 03:53 AM (#4379551)
Explain to me the significance gamingboy. Why don't we just call them Taiwan? I know the ROC thing has something to do with a government in exile or something...

From the 1930s to late 1940s, the Communist "People's Republic of China" and the Nationalist "Republic of China" were in a civil war that was only interrupted when the Japanese invaded. Eventually, the PRC forced the ROC to flee to Taiwan, and so technically since then there have been two countries that, on paper, claim to be legitimate rulers of China. Due to the fact that most countries recognize the PRC as the rulers of China, the ROC is sort of in a legal netherworld where they are obviously independent in practice but also technically part of the PRC (and vice-versa). It's... complicated, but basically, they are called "Chinese Taipei" and not "Taiwan" as a way of not pissing off China, which still technically claims the island.

According to B-Ref, Kalian Sams and Michael Duursma. Unfortunately the awesome Dirk Van't Klooster was not added to the roster this year.

[114] The video is not working for me. I think it has something to do with my IP, but I'm not sure since I can't read Chinese.

There are a few, mainly from the Hoofdklasse.
   123. Tschingsch Posted: March 03, 2013 at 03:57 AM (#4379555)
Yeah, I'm having the same problem with the video link too. Chrome isn't translating that page for some reason. That sucks, based on the video GB posted yesterday, that feed would be MUCH more fun to watch.
   124. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: March 03, 2013 at 03:58 AM (#4379556)
Edit: Refreshing the page caused resubmits and hence delayed double posts. Odd.

Yeah, I've heard they are competing with Italy and Australia for the opening of the 2014 season, or something.

I can't find a mainstream source for the story, but according to an article that was posted here the Netherlands already won. They'll have 3 MLB games in 2014 or 2015.
   126. Tschingsch Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:00 AM (#4379558)
Google translate basically says that you have to be in Taiwan to watch.
   127. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:00 AM (#4379559)
Ah, I see.
   128. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:02 AM (#4379560)
Yesterday's link were posted by some of the people who are in the Fan Cave, I'll let you know if they post them again.

Woo!!
   130. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:04 AM (#4379562)

Someone suggested there's a bug where if you edit a post, then hit refresh you'll create a double post.

Edit: although I just tried to recreate that and failed.

Nice ####### camera work. Who is directing this?
   135. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:06 AM (#4379567)
This is going to be fun.
   136. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:06 AM (#4379568)
that was close, the Dutch RF made a big dive for that and came within inchs. but missed and now we have no outs 2nd and 3rd
   137. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:06 AM (#4379569)

I was just thinking that if the MLB wants people to take these games seriously, they'll need to upgrade their production values. There's some lousy work being done at some of these games.
   138. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:07 AM (#4379570)
Well, it's sleepy time over here. I'll read the rest of the chat in the morning before looking up the final score. G'night guys.
   139. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:07 AM (#4379571)
Meulens is making a mistake leaving him in.
   140. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:08 AM (#4379572)
Oof
   141. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:08 AM (#4379573)
woooooooooooo, Chen single, the Taiwan's runner on 2nd stopped at 3rd but Chen took advantage and advanced to 2nd on the throw home, now they're intentionally walking Chang, who has had a knack of getting big hits in international games, so no outs bases loaded. woooo

   142. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:08 AM (#4379574)
Shairon Martis time.

According to the papers today, the MLB decided to NOT use the local CPBL crew and hired other local camera crew and yes everyone here is complaining of the shitty directing. the guy's drunk or something.

YESSSSSSSSSS bases loaded HBP
   144. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:10 AM (#4379576)
Do the honkbalers have another hurler?

one neat thing about NED, this inning notwithstanding, is that unlike last time when they were the plucky miracle underdogs, this year they seem to have some swagger. I expect they'll pound the bajaysus out of Australia.
   145. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:12 AM (#4379578)
yeah but it seems quite possible this year for Aus to go 0-3 and everyone else 2-1 or something, so every run would count.
   146. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:12 AM (#4379579)
Honkballers need a DP.
   147. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:12 AM (#4379580)
Ah. For a second off the bat I thought that was a grand slam...and I wondered if the whole stadium would collapse.
   148. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:13 AM (#4379581)
sac fly, pretty deep too, if that went out someone would die of a heart attack
   149. The Yankee Clapper Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:14 AM (#4379582)
Last inning for me, I think. Another hit would help.
   150. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:14 AM (#4379583)

yeah but it seems quite possible this year for Aus to go 0-3 and everyone else 2-1 or something, so every run would count.

Although if Korea plays like they did last night....
   151. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:14 AM (#4379584)
2 strait sac fly, good enough.
   152. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:15 AM (#4379585)
Yes, if Aus is winless then a three way tie at 2-1 is very possible. Taiwan will absolutely need to beat Korea...
   153. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:16 AM (#4379586)
yeah then we might see the interesting site of the losing team celebrating a game because they lost within the margin to advance, that would be pretty stupid though.

   154. Swedish Chef Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:17 AM (#4379587)
It's... complicated, but basically, they are called "Chinese Taipei" and not "Taiwan" as a way of not pissing off China, which still technically claims the island.

Nothing technical about it.

And there's the other wrinkle that Taiwan isn't claiming to be independent, but the legitimate Chinese government. The question of independence/reunification is the main political split there. China really doesn't like talk of independence, so they tend to cheer on their old foes in Kuomintang.
   155. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:17 AM (#4379588)
Look! Snoopy in a commercial! Further proof he belongs in the list of greatest fictional baseball players.
   156. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:17 AM (#4379589)
well if Korea lose to Aus and Taiwan win this game we already advanced I think, that would be pretty awesome.

   157. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:19 AM (#4379590)
This game is far from over, Rollingwave. Far.

If not for the wind, Simmons goes deep there.
   158. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:19 AM (#4379591)
Wow. Thought THAT was gone for sure.
   159. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:21 AM (#4379592)
the local wind is helping...
   160. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:22 AM (#4379593)
Shut down inning.
   161. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:23 AM (#4379594)

definately, I'm hanging on for the ride. we'll probably see Kuo! again.

The problem is that we're damned either way, claiming either isn't going to fly, and the official line of claiming to be legitimate China at least make us just politically screwed and not you know.. Palestinian screwed. but that's for another thread, as a whole in the recent 4-5 years with the return of the KMT and a more friendly China approach has generally worked better than his predecessor threat of indepdence approach.
   162. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:26 AM (#4379595)
Now it's raining, because the wind wasn't holding the ball in play enough.
   163. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:29 AM (#4379596)
Now it's raining, because the wind wasn't holding the ball in play enough.
I'm sure we're flying in all our rain makers now to get this game called :P

I thought it was the other China that had the rain machines? I seem to remember them from before the 2008 Olympics... :p
   165. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:36 AM (#4379598)
oops, that was embarrasing
   166. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:37 AM (#4379599)
YEAH, nice play by Lin there.
   167. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:40 AM (#4379600)
I feel like the Honkballers still have a big inning left in them. The big hitters will be able to come up again. Wonder if we'll see Kuo.
   168. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:44 AM (#4379602)
Kuo + Chen is probably the best shutdown reliever combo we've had like.. ever, especially since I don't ever recall Kuo and Tsao being reliever on the same team.

Dutch's defense is getting shaky this inning.

Boy, the cheering is reaching insane level even for us.
   169. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:45 AM (#4379603)
If that can't even get out....
   170. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:47 AM (#4379604)
god damn it what happened my broadcast freezed and they scored another run.
   171. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:50 AM (#4379605)
FEIJHUOJFILDJFEI:SLJREIOJREILRJE:L YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
   172. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:50 AM (#4379606)
Okay, I think that might be it, although it'd be foolish to completely count the Dutch out.
   173. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:52 AM (#4379607)
also, who ever's directing this game's broadcast should be fired.
   174. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:55 AM (#4379608)
This kid, I feel like I've heard of him before during my reading... what'd he do?
   175. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:56 AM (#4379609)
They only had 1 hit the whole game though.

Tseng is a big time up coming prospect for Taiwan. 18 year old and reach mid 90s at times. but his recent warmup outting was shaky and doesn't seem like he's much better now.
   176. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 04:57 AM (#4379610)
Dear god, Gangnam Style.
   177. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:00 AM (#4379611)
that seemed like a pretty strait change
   178. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:02 AM (#4379612)
IIRC Tseng's going to sign with a MLB team soon, he's pretty highly touted, but obviously great pitching prospect turning into good pitcher is different thing
   179. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:03 AM (#4379613)

TINSTAAPP
   180. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:05 AM (#4379614)
yeah, but there's no doubt that he's probably the most exicting pitching prospect out of Taiwan since the monster trio of Tsao / Wang / Kuo (unforunately between those 3 you had about 5 really good season in the bigs and that's it)
   181. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:07 AM (#4379615)
YEAHHHHHHHHHHH, DP
   182. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:08 AM (#4379616)
Also, the lefty that pitched before Kuo yesterday, Yang .. he's getting some buzz too though he's playing in the NPB already so if he goes over it'll be ala the Chen Wei Yin route
   183. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:10 AM (#4379617)
Ichiro apparently was in a car accident? Thankfully, he escaped unharmed, but it just seems kind of a weird karma that that would happen to him when he could have been at the WBC.
   184. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:17 AM (#4379618)
let see if they put Kuo in here, they have a off day tomorrow, I'd figure they would certainly take no risk for this one.

IIRC they can start Wang for the final game against Korea right?

   185. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:19 AM (#4379619)
Kuo.
   186. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:20 AM (#4379620)
yup, Kuo is up, blow them away
   187. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:21 AM (#4379621)
wooo, that's a pretty impressive range there.
   188. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:22 AM (#4379622)
If the gun is still as slowed as it was yesterday, then Kuo's pitching in the mid 90s for sure
   189. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:23 AM (#4379623)
2 down, lucky play there, Kuo nearly tipped it into a single.
   190. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:24 AM (#4379624)
3 , ####### , outs.
   191. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:32 AM (#4379626)
Kuo should be able to have a job with a MLB team...
   192. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:39 AM (#4379628)
I think Kuo can go another inning, he finish that last one with like 9 pitches or something, wonder what they do here.
   193. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:41 AM (#4379629)
Also, with Japan suddenly looking vunerable this year, and the way Taiwan's playing, the 2nd round could turn out quite interesting as well.

They brought in Chen.
   194. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:41 AM (#4379630)
btw, I love Chen's windup, it just looks awesome.

it seems our plan is basically just to avoid Andruw like a plague, can't blame them.
   195. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:43 AM (#4379631)
Not to mention how Korea is looking. it's entirely possible that these are the two teams that will escape to Tokyo, especially if the Dutch beat up on the Aussies or the Koreans fall to Taipei.
   196. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:46 AM (#4379632)
1 more out.

Cuba didn't look too sharp today too, so it could be really really interesting.
   197. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:49 AM (#4379633)
they can't even get the pitch count right now, this broadcast crew is so fail.

########################## YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, you can see from the players reaction they know that this win is like 90% ticket to advance.
   198. Gamingboy Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:49 AM (#4379634)
And so Taipei, barring a total and utter beat-down by Korea, is heading to Round 2.

And now... its almost time for Japan-China. Should be a blow-out. I'll probably watch it a bit as I try to fall to sleep again.
   199. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 05:51 AM (#4379635)
yeah, if Japan can't even blow out China they're in big big trouble. but as i said before, China is probably the fastest improving team in the world. so you don't want to take them too lightly.
   200. RollingWave Posted: March 03, 2013 at 06:04 AM (#4379637)
Ichiro apparently was in a car accident? Thankfully, he escaped unharmed, but it just seems kind of a weird karma that that would happen to him when he could have been at the WBC.

it's ashame too, i'm not sure why he doesn't play this year, his new contract is down and it's likely his last anyway. he basically sealed his status as Japan's most legendary player with his 10th inning winning hit against Korea last time.
