Looking over the exact formulas, I believe Taipei will be the odd team out if Korea wins by exactly 5 runs going to the second tiebreaker. So basically:

Taipei win or Korea win by 1-4 runs: Netherlands and Taipei advance
Korea win by 5 runs: Korea and Netherlands advance

Netherlands is the #2 seed and faces the winner of Japan-Cuba, in any case.
   102. Tschingsch Posted: March 05, 2013 at 03:55 AM (#4380845)
OK, so since Australia is 0-3, the scores against them don't count? That's the only way this makes sense to me. Chinese Taipei won 4-1 and 8-3, so they are +8, Korea lost 5-0 and won 6-0, so they are +1. The Dutch won 5-0 and 4-1, and lost 6-0, so that would be +3. If Korea beats Taipei 4-1, that would make Taipei +5 and Korea +4 if the Australia games count. I know there's some additional math as winning teams didn't play their 9th inning, but I would think there would be a score which would make that irrelevant. So, even though it's on the WBC, MLB, and Honkbal that they advanced, I think I'm going to wait until after the Taipei/Korea game to celebrate.
   103. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: March 05, 2013 at 04:21 AM (#4380847)
Yeah, the margin of victory against Australia doesn't matter since they aren't part of the tiebreaker.
   104. Tschingsch Posted: March 05, 2013 at 07:15 AM (#4380857)
Wow, after putting up a good fight against Japan and Cuba, Brazil has fallen apart against China.
   105. Tschingsch Posted: March 05, 2013 at 07:22 AM (#4380858)
China pulls a Brazil on Brazil...

is that I've Been Working on the Railroad being played in the background?
   108. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 07:55 AM (#4380861)
Please settle down Yang...
   109. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 07:58 AM (#4380862)
Nice throw.
   110. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 07:59 AM (#4380863)
caught a break there, especially since Yangs actually shaky.... Korea totally gave us a free inning there.

Also, Lin can really play major league CF, only if he can hit enough...
   111. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 08:03 AM (#4380864)
friendly call there...
   112. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 08:05 AM (#4380865)
both starter is wild so far... this is going to be scary
   113. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 08:08 AM (#4380866)
woooo... Chang's a super weird player, he's basically average in the CPBL, but in international games he's pretty absurd.

here comes Koeran killer Kao
   114. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 08:15 AM (#4380868)
anytime I see Lee Da Hao hit somethign in the air I cring... luckily that one wasn't too deep.
   115. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 08:16 AM (#4380869)
Wow, that looked a little low.
   116. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 08:20 AM (#4380872)
I'm enjoying watching a stream from Korea and trying to figure out the commercials.
   117. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 08:24 AM (#4380874)
yeah, friendly zone there.
   118. Tschingsch Posted: March 05, 2013 at 08:24 AM (#4380875)
Is there a link to the Korean broadcast? Must be more enjoyable than Joe Magrane...
   119. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 08:25 AM (#4380876)
There is, bottom link on the sour fruit-monikered streaming site.
   120. Tschingsch Posted: March 05, 2013 at 08:31 AM (#4380877)
Danke, I've been out of the loop on such things...
   121. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 08:31 AM (#4380878)
The Korean announcers are simply dying here.

edit: I only found the Korean stream when my ESPNAmerica stream froze up. Definitely an upgrade.
   122. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 08:32 AM (#4380879)
WOW, meltdown Korea

that was some ballsy base running though

(for those not watching, 2 out blooper single and the runner from first scored as Korean CF apparently didn't think he would go for home
   123. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 08:40 AM (#4380882)
The Korean announcers are simply dying here.

Does anyone have a Korean broadcast of the 2009 final 10th inning? that must have been surreal.
   124. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 08:46 AM (#4380884)
CHARGE THE MOUND!
   125. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 08:48 AM (#4380885)
well if Korea gets blown out they might do that I guess, but we're not Japan.

btw, what the hell happens if there is a fight in the WBC anyway?
   126. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 08:52 AM (#4380886)
Yang broke a blister or something.

bloodie ball!
   127. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 08:55 AM (#4380888)
whew.
   128. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:03 AM (#4380893)
Taiwan is actually getting a lot hits...

   129. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:07 AM (#4380895)
It's getting late early for Korea.
   130. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:08 AM (#4380896)
Seems a bit like the Australia-Taiwan game. Taiwan getting base runners but not getting the big hit to open things up. More dangerous against Korea who are better than Australia.
   131. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:08 AM (#4380897)
wow the luck is really going against the Koreans in this one, seeing eye single with 2 outs for the 2nd run.

   132. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:10 AM (#4380898)
That's a big run. The problem for Korea of course is that effectively they are down by six runs now. Taiwans pitching depth has seemed good so far so I don't get the sense that they are going to have some punching bag out there late.
   133. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:10 AM (#4380899)
they didn't use many pitchers, in either 2 game, and what's more is that they're comming off 1 day , so basically they have everyone except CMW avalible.

   134. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:21 AM (#4380901)
pleeeeease...settle.... down....
   135. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:25 AM (#4380902)
Korean announcers probably died a bit more there... ouch
   136. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:31 AM (#4380904)
dang, thought he got that.
   137. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:32 AM (#4380907)
ouuuuut... siiiiide...
   138. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:40 AM (#4380909)
Big inning here. If Korea can get something started they'll have the middle of the order up. If they can't do something now it's going to be the 7th or 8th when those guys come up again.
   139. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:44 AM (#4380911)
wow, the Korean hitter look thoroughly demoralized there.
   140. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:48 AM (#4380915)
Lee's basically Korean Hideki Matsui, except without the weird hentai stuff. huge AB here.
   141. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:49 AM (#4380918)
my heart stopped for a second there....
   142. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:50 AM (#4380920)
So this is some other cm Wang?
   143. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:51 AM (#4380921)
yeah, a decent reliever in the CPBL.
   144. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:53 AM (#4380924)
ballsy play... scary
   145. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:53 AM (#4380925)
Dude the Taiwan ball girl wins the whole WBC. She needs to become an internet sensation like today.
   146. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:54 AM (#4380926)
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!
   147. Tschingsch Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:54 AM (#4380927)
Bad call.
   148. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:56 AM (#4380930)
Did he block the whole plate? can't tell from that angel..

   149. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:57 AM (#4380931)
Dude the Taiwan ball girl wins the whole WBC. She needs to become an internet sensation like today.

I think the ball girl is part of our conspriacy to maximize our home field advantage
   150. Tschingsch Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:58 AM (#4380932)
Maybe I'm wrong... not only did it look like he got the plate, it didn't even look like the catcher tug him, but the replay looked a little closer than I thought.
   151. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 05, 2013 at 09:58 AM (#4380933)
Bad call? Looked like the runner didn't touch the plate.
   152. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:05 AM (#4380937)
Lou is ashame, he's a huge pitcher, but can't control his stuff enough to make it out of AA.

   153. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:10 AM (#4380941)
CS Lin is Chinese for Derek Jeter. (snark)

   154. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:18 AM (#4380946)
it's really getting very late for Korea, they're not going to score 6+ runs off Hong Chih Kuo.

   155. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:20 AM (#4380949)
Dear Lin: you are probably the top 5 bes hitter on the team, please don't bunt.

edit : oh well it ended up about the same anyway.
   156. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:22 AM (#4380950)
man... this homecrowd really is a huge huge advantage.
   157. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:24 AM (#4380952)
uggh.. another run there would have been a total death seal.
   158. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:28 AM (#4380954)
9 outs away from me donating 20 bucks to BBTF!!!
   159. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:39 AM (#4380960)
Kuo time let's go!
   160. Gamingboy Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:39 AM (#4380961)
Oh, so NOW my internet starts working again...
   161. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:45 AM (#4380964)
Only 5 runs to go!

The game would end if Korea is making a comeback in the 9th inning? That's screwy.
   162. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:45 AM (#4380965)
They should change that rule, if the announcers are correct.
   163. Gamingboy Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:49 AM (#4380967)
Given that China beat Brazil, have to think Brazil will go back to Panama City or whatever Latino-American country holds qualifiers. Given the rapidly improving state of Brazilian baseball, it should be a fun qualifier.
   164. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:50 AM (#4380968)
One out away!
   165. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:51 AM (#4380969)
I'm shocked that China beat Brazil, Brazil's roster is much better than I expected and Cuba absolutely pasted China.
   166. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:52 AM (#4380970)
4 more runs to go, right?
   167. rb's team is hopeful for the new year! Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:52 AM (#4380971)
These announcers don't seem to understand the rules.
   168. Gamingboy Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:53 AM (#4380974)
So, the Koreans just took the lead and possibly eliminated themselves doing it....

I think.

Stupid tiebreakers.
   169. Tschingsch Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:55 AM (#4380975)
How strange. Korea beats Chinese Taipei and Chinese Taipei celebrates...
   170. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:55 AM (#4380976)
Annyeong, Korea!
   171. rb's team is hopeful for the new year! Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:57 AM (#4380980)
I'm excited to see taiwan go through an inning trying NOT to score.
   172. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:57 AM (#4380981)
Stupid tiebreakers.

Yeah, it's really weird. They need to change the rules slightly to allow a would be eliminated team to bat in the bottom of the 9th. Also perhaps put a secondary "tiebreaker" score next to the actual score showing how far behind the team is so that it's more obvious that the they're losing the war.

Taiwan wants to win the game. LOL.
   173. Devin has a deep burning passion for fuzzy socks Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:58 AM (#4380982)
I know the tiebreaker thing seems weird, but you have to be fair. It's not like the Netherlands got a 9th inning to pad their lead against Korea.
   174. rb's team is hopeful for the new year! Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:58 AM (#4380983)
Why are they trying to score? That's dumb.
   175. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:58 AM (#4380984)
oh boy now it gets interesting
   176. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 10:59 AM (#4380986)
It really doesn't matter if Taiwan scores to tie it up, Korea can't score enough runs to get past them on the tiebreaker. So Taiwan might as well try to win outright for pride/bragging rights/seeding.
   177. Tschingsch Posted: March 05, 2013 at 11:01 AM (#4380989)
These rules make no sense... Korea won't be allowed to try to advance because they're winning...
   178. Gamingboy Posted: March 05, 2013 at 11:01 AM (#4380991)
Stupid, stupid tiebreakers. Congrats to Taipei, it's been a long strange journey. With luck, the success of this WBC will help revive the CPBL much like the Korean performances in the WBC cause KBO attendance to boom.
   179. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 11:02 AM (#4380992)
It's not like the Netherlands got a 9th inning to pad their lead against Korea.

That's a good point. You might need modified rules then to allow for a 9th inning when you're already winning. I know they have rules in place to assure that teams who win by the mercy rule aren't penalized for it.
   180. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: March 05, 2013 at 11:03 AM (#4380993)
This pool wound up being terrific. Even though the Aussies didn't win a game they were competitive. I think the lack if real blow outs is a very positive thing for this event.
   181. Gamingboy Posted: March 05, 2013 at 11:05 AM (#4380996)
A long, long, time ago, couldn't a team have a bottom of the ninth be played if they wanted to? I mean, like, a really long time ago. Like, Alexander Cartwright and Doc Adams day?
   182. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 11:06 AM (#4380998)
Well, Korea at least salvaged a winning record. Still gotta be a bitter disappointment.

Good on Taiwan, from having to qualify for the WBC to their pool's first seed in the second round. My predictions about who would make it from each pool are already busted.
   183. rb's team is hopeful for the new year! Posted: March 05, 2013 at 11:08 AM (#4381001)
Even dumber than trying to score, that guy making the catch at the end.

@176, oh yes, i see now.

Unless they tied it up and then hit a grand slam.
   184. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 11:10 AM (#4381004)
I think the lack if real blow outs is a very positive thing for this event.

Yeah, the only mercy rule so far was China-Cuba. Brazil was very competitive. China won a game! I really hope that Italy and Spain can play well enough to at least make it through full games.
   185. Tschingsch Posted: March 05, 2013 at 11:12 AM (#4381005)
So, for those keeping score - one of the teams who made the finals last tournament was just eliminated by a team who didn't win a game last tournament.
   186. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 11:16 AM (#4381008)
well, i guess for me this is the best of both worlds, Taiwan advance and I don't have to donate money :P
   187. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 11:44 AM (#4381026)
Semi-finals. Korea made the finals of the inaugural Classic. Cuba beat them in the semis in 2009.
   188. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: March 05, 2013 at 11:51 AM (#4381035)
No.

Finals.

Korea lost to Japan in the Semi's of the Inagural.

Korea lost to Japan in the Final of the 2009 Classic.

Former at Petco, latter at Dodger Stadium.

The 2006 game was a whole lot of fun, but 2009 game might have been the best baseball game I've ever attended ...
   189. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 12:10 PM (#4381049)
@187, you got it backward.

Also, apaprently, Kim Jun Un is so pissed at this elimination that he's about the invade the south.

   190. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 12:11 PM (#4381050)
the 2009 finals played out like a freaking move script. 10th inning winning hit by Ichiro AND a walk off K by Darvish?
   191. Gamingboy Posted: March 05, 2013 at 12:54 PM (#4381092)
Rollingwave: The Kim family is ALWAYS about to invade the South, but they never do, since it'd be suicide for them. At this point China probably wouldn't help if it was obvious that they made the first move (heck, it'd be entirely possible that China would invade North Korea just so they could put a sane puppet government in place instead of the psycho that they currently only keep around because of tradition and the fact he's not democratic), the atomic weapons that the North Koreans have are probably not usable in battlefield situations and the South Korean/US forces would mop the floor with them in a conventional war, especially if they'd been given warning about it... y'know, like if North Korea had sent out a press release swearing they were going to rain hellfire down upon them.

But we're getting off-topic. WBC-MLB Exhibitions start today... and Joe Torre has JOE MAUER HITTING CLEANUP!?!?!

I mean, admittedly it's an exhibition, but having MAUER HIT CLEANUP and having STANTON HIT FIFTH seems... weird. Especially given the fact that Stanton's batting practice yesterday was like Zeus having come down from Olympus.
   192. RollingWave Posted: March 05, 2013 at 12:57 PM (#4381100)
@ Gameingboy : that was obviously a snark.
