MLB Network has the Phillies-DR game on right now, and will have Mexico-Arizona on later. And apparently USA-CWS will be available online for free.

Cole Hamels has, as of this writing, given up 8 earned runs to Team DR.

In other words, maybe it's a good thing that he decided to pass on the WBC.

Not to suggest the Dominicans are free swingers, but somehow they batted around on 18 pitches in ten minutes.

Watching this game I kinda think it's finally DR's year to shine. I also think the US team is in serious danger. Canada's infield is fantastic and Mexico is no easy out.

Also, Spain will be lucky to not get mercied in a single game. I know PR is down a bit, but they still have Major Leaguers up and down the lineup.

Beltran, the Molina brothers, Alex Rios, Angel Pagan, Mike Aviles, plus some major league hurlers.

   13. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 05, 2013 at 03:37 PM (#4381299)
Woah, I just checked Spain's roster and it's just a bunch of Latin Americans. WTF? Why even bother with that kind of farce. Curacao and Aruba are still part of the Netherlands, but when was the last time Venezuela was part of Spain?
   14. Gamingboy Posted: March 05, 2013 at 03:37 PM (#4381301)
Weekly journalist... are you okay? And why did Meatwad for pope copy you?
   15. Gamingboy Posted: March 05, 2013 at 03:40 PM (#4381303)
Anyway, WJ, the Spanish team is the most mercenary of the teams, possibly anywhere in the world, when it comes to getting passport players. They take advantage of the fact that Cuban defectors usually have Spanish ancestry and also offer spots to Latin American players not good enough to play on their actual country's team. I certainly hope they go 0-3, if only because of that. At least the Israelis (who the Spanish beat to get into the tournament) made a point of having a few actual Israelis they'd plucked from community colleges and Israeli beer league teams. The Spanish? They have a grand total of one actual Spaniard.

Does anybody know if they put these games on MLB.TV? I check the PS3 app the other day, and they haven't updated it for the 2013 season yet.

It's not on MLB.tv, instead it's through the WBC website and/or an app they are offering. It's only available if you have one of the participating service providers though, although, this being the internet, I'm sure there are some... other methods.

I read this in an ESPN Boston notes column:

Team Netherlands advanced to the second round in their bracket, thanks in part to Ludovicus Jacobus Maria Van Mil. The Netherlands beat Australia, 4-1, with Bogaerts doubling for his first hit in three games (1 for 8, 2 walks) and Van Mil, the 7-foot-1 closer who goes by “Loek” and is now in the Reds’ system...

Now that is one big honkballer, with a name to match.
   19. Tripon Posted: March 05, 2013 at 03:49 PM (#4381313)
Hmm, okay. I wouldn't have minded watching these games on a delay. (I'm not waking it up or staying up at 2AM to watch these games), but it sounds like a bit of a hassle to watch these games. I will probably wait until the U.S. games start to start watching then.
   20. JJ1986 Posted: March 05, 2013 at 03:51 PM (#4381315)
Loek used to be a bit of a prospect.

I couldnt resist it. I was sad that no one else did.
   22. Gamingboy Posted: March 05, 2013 at 03:55 PM (#4381319)
The USA vs. CWS exhibition game apparently will be on here.
   23. Gamingboy Posted: March 05, 2013 at 04:02 PM (#4381322)
It seems the White Sox just webcast their games with some guy I've never heard of calling it.
   24. bunyon Posted: March 05, 2013 at 04:14 PM (#4381333)
So I hadn't realized until well into the tournament, but the pools don't all play at the same time; why not?

Mainly so that the Asian pools will have a chance to adjust to jet-lag.

The "color" guy is Bill Melton, who is senile. Russ Langer is the play by play guy, I believe he mostly does minor league stuff but for whatever reason he's in Glendale working for the Sox this spring.

Eh, still better than Hawk.

5:00 AM- Cuba vs. Japan

Hmm, this time works much more nicely for me! I'm quite excited for the game, so that seems to fit well too.
   30. Gamingboy Posted: March 05, 2013 at 05:59 PM (#4381473)
Well, I haven't been watching for a few innings because I have other things to do, but it seems like a good thing that Team USA is having these practice games, with some type of blunder with a run down (didn't see it, anybody who did, fill me in), Tim Collins having a very bad day and the bats having holes in them, at least so far.

Oh, and apparently Mark Teixeira hurt himself hitting off a tee. Presumably, because it was a WBC tee, it's, like, actually a Weapon of Mass Destruction or something, so he's out and Team USA is going to call on a different 1B to replace him (which, given Teix's infamous starts of seasons, could be a good thing, depending on who they get).
   31. Gamingboy Posted: March 05, 2013 at 06:01 PM (#4381476)
Oh, and Hugo Chavez died, which instantly makes the Venezuelan Team more interesting than it was before, especially because if memory serves baseball is basically the only thing that the factions in that country can agree on.

This is pretty early for a visit to the mound.
   33. Juilin Sandar to Conkling Speedwell (Arjun) Posted: March 06, 2013 at 07:00 AM (#4381739)
That was quite a blast by Tomas, Cuba up 1-0, bottom of the third.
   34. Juilin Sandar to Conkling Speedwell (Arjun) Posted: March 06, 2013 at 08:38 AM (#4381749)
I wonder how scouts are going to view Tanaka's performance today: 2IP, 1R, 1ER, 3H, but he looked really solid and he struck out all six batters he got out, including Gourriel, Abreu, and Arruebarruena, which is a pretty impressive list (and he was dominant in his second inning of work).

Currently 3-0, top of the seventh. Japan's offense hasn't been very good so far.
   35. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 06, 2013 at 09:03 AM (#4381757)
Japan has been unimpressive to say the least. Barely beat Brazil, and compare their win over China to Cubas.

I dunno. The Cubans are looking scary. The other Latin teams have some good offense but cuba's pitching looks sharp.
   36. Juilin Sandar to Conkling Speedwell (Arjun) Posted: March 06, 2013 at 09:13 AM (#4381764)
Despaigne just wrecked that ball. 6-0!
   37. RollingWave Posted: March 06, 2013 at 09:40 AM (#4381779)
Taiwan faces the loser of this game on the 8th right?

Wang is starting that game, seem like the best idea to go all in and try and beat Japan.

Taiwan would go bat #### insane if we could get past Tokyo
   38. Juilin Sandar to Conkling Speedwell (Arjun) Posted: March 06, 2013 at 09:45 AM (#4381781)
Tying run comes to the plate! 6-3! Japan rallying in the ninth!
   39. Juilin Sandar to Conkling Speedwell (Arjun) Posted: March 06, 2013 at 09:48 AM (#4381782)
...and that's game. 6-3 final, that got a little tense by the end.
   40. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 06, 2013 at 09:50 AM (#4381784)
Don Mattingly on Mike & Mike this morning was very positive about the WBC. He said that while it's a bit of an inconvenience if that helps grow the game globally then teams should just go along with it.
   41. JJ1986 Posted: March 06, 2013 at 11:19 AM (#4381844)
Eric Hosmer, who hit .232/.304/.359 last year, is now the Team USA first baseman. I know there aren't that many great American 1Bmen, but that's really not a good choice. They can't get Freeman?
   42. JJ1986 Posted: March 06, 2013 at 11:24 AM (#4381849)
Jeff Passan:

Not only has Team USA not called Prince Fielder, they did not reach out to Freddie Freeman yesterday. May be looking strictly in Arizona.
   43. Gamingboy Posted: March 06, 2013 at 11:38 AM (#4381866)
I watched the game from bed. It did get pretty tense near the end....

Also, while Hosmer is a WTF pick when you look at last year's stats, the fact he'd been having a kick-ass spring and is a Team USA alum makes me a bit more optimistic than it normally would be. And given the scramble that no doubt ensued with Teixeira getting hurt, it probably was going to have to be a Arizona guy.
