That is huge.

You don't pitch your way off the island, huh? If the DR and the USA play, the score is going to be something like 25-23.
   103. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 07, 2013 at 08:53 PM (#4383434)
Excellent catch. He went a long, long way.
   104. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 08:54 PM (#4383435)
NICE CATCH

Did Thorne just say all of the games have sold out?
   106. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 07, 2013 at 08:59 PM (#4383446)
it wouldn't shock me if the US/PR games had sold out.
   107. RollingWave Posted: March 07, 2013 at 09:01 PM (#4383449)
Well Ahmadenijad don't have nearly the same power as Chavez. not to mention, people tend to forget the Iran do actually run pretty competitive elections.

Also, I think folks in the US tend to not get what a nuke actually means to countries without one, if we're able to take a survey in Iran I think you'll probably be surprised at the portion of folks who actually think going all in for a nuke is worth it, and lets face it, it's not like Iran is going North Korean all in.

In the middle east world, the fact that the US blatantly allows Israel to live by a completely different set of rules to the their neighbors (or, any countries in the world for that matter.) in those regards obviously also don't help matters at all.

Lets face it, if Iran today say they'll totally actively give up nuke and cooperate to the fullest UN extend and then some, but demands that the UN actively investigate and applies non-profliferation act to Israel? (aka force them to sign it, follow it, or get out of the UN) . I'll bet you the house that it's not going to be China / Russia that veto the bill, it's gonna be the US. and it is precisely these sort of issue that give a ton of credence to many messed up regimes around the world to keep doing their thing

   108. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 07, 2013 at 09:04 PM (#4383454)
I think we should move right along past the political discussion given that there's separate threads for that. Suffice to say, we disagree on a lot of that :)
   109. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 07, 2013 at 09:10 PM (#4383459)
Venezuela really could have used a run there.
   110. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 09:11 PM (#4383461)
Okay, stop the politics, watch the game. Yeah, baseball.
   111. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 07, 2013 at 09:15 PM (#4383465)
that DR lineup is really, really good.
   112. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 09:26 PM (#4383473)
that DR lineup is really, really good.

Yeah.
   113. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 09:34 PM (#4383479)
You cannot stop the Dominican Republic, you can only hope to contain it.
   114. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 07, 2013 at 09:46 PM (#4383484)
I'd love to see one of the projection systems do a bit on how each WBC team would do over the course of a season. The US team might project as a 100 game winner.
   115. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 09:48 PM (#4383486)
We got ourselves a game.
   116. RollingWave Posted: March 07, 2013 at 09:49 PM (#4383487)
You cannot stop the Dominican Republic, you can only hope to contain it.

Or.. just out score them, since they're kinda like the Rockets of baseball right now ;)

Almost certainly I'd think , the DR team to an extend too.

but the beautiful thing is that they're by no means given to win this thing
   118. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 07, 2013 at 09:51 PM (#4383490)
VIVA VENEZUELA!
   119. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 10:01 PM (#4383495)
I think I saw somebody project that, just based on the WAR of players, Team USA would probably be winning 120+ games, although I think there is the problem there that it forgets that not everybody could start or be the high-leverage closer if such a situation.
   120. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: March 07, 2013 at 10:03 PM (#4383497)
[119] 120 doesn't sound too off by me. Compare Team USA to the 1998 Yankees or 2001 Mariners.
   121. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 10:07 PM (#4383500)
Yeah, for all the crap that people say about how "bad" a Dickey, Vogelsong, Holland, Gonzalez, Detwiler group is, the fact is that most-if not all- MLB teams would murder for that 1-5 rotation.

Makes me wonder how many games the "Dream Team" USA with Verlander, Kershaw, Trout, Harper, Posey etc. would win...
   122. RollingWave Posted: March 07, 2013 at 10:07 PM (#4383501)

yeah but in practice, it also means the teams are a lot less likely to lose due to those fringe reliever / sucky utility players blowing it.

120 is obviously not likely in practice, but over 100 seems quite likely.
   123. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 07, 2013 at 10:11 PM (#4383504)
5-3! It's a ballgame!
   124. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 07, 2013 at 10:14 PM (#4383506)
The DR is churning their pitchers.
   125. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 10:15 PM (#4383507)
Both of these teams are screwed, since at this rate they will have to have position players pitch by the third game.
   126. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 07, 2013 at 10:19 PM (#4383508)
Andrus was HAULING down the line.
   127. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 10:24 PM (#4383511)
Cabrera vs. Dotel! Only one can truly be a leader!
   128. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 10:25 PM (#4383512)
Bases juiced for the Panda.
   129. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 07, 2013 at 10:26 PM (#4383515)
He really looks like a panda.
   130. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 07, 2013 at 10:29 PM (#4383516)
Dang.
   131. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 10:44 PM (#4383522)
Dotel has lost it!
   132. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 07, 2013 at 10:47 PM (#4383524)
Jose Reyes probably has a pretty good fastball, right?
   133. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 10:53 PM (#4383527)
Jose Reyes probably has a pretty good fastball, right?

Yeah, but for all we know Robinson Cano has been taught the arcane art of the Cutter by Mariano Rivera.
   134. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 07, 2013 at 10:54 PM (#4383528)
Jose Canseco should be every team's designated pitcher.
   135. BourbonSamurai Is a Lazy Nogoodnik Posted: March 07, 2013 at 10:58 PM (#4383531)
Big home run for Hanley!

Kyle Lohse overlooked again.

I'd say that the answer to this problem is clearly Ichiro, except Seattle freaked out the last time he was talking about doing that for team Japan, and I can't imagine what Cashman's reaction would be given the offseason he's had.
   138. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 11:05 PM (#4383539)
Have Dutch/Cubans on the computer. It looks like a bigger crowd than it was in Fukuoka for non-Japanese games, but still far from a large crowd.
   139. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 11:11 PM (#4383549)
   140. cardsfanboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 11:12 PM (#4383550)
What, you mean you don't want to see Anthony Rizzo, Chris Denorfia and Alex Liddi try their hardest to avoid being mercy-ruled?
   4. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 01:11 PM (#4382877)
Now that I think about it, the fact that I said that probably ensures it'll be a 10-inning barnburner.

Lol. Not quite, but pretty close.
   141. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 07, 2013 at 11:13 PM (#4383551)
The North has a #### baseball team, but no one can hit it over the wall. The Vale is like playing in Colorado. Valyria uses PEDs, Performance Enhancing Dragons.

Ha, you're right.
   143. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 11:17 PM (#4383554)
The Japanese love them some Wladimir Balentien.
   144. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 07, 2013 at 11:21 PM (#4383557)
Every now and then I love fangraphs. Buck Martinez starts talking about how Jones has lost batspeed but he had more success last season against the curve. Look it up... nope, he the second-worst season of his career vs curves, 2.8 runs below average. Still an above-average fastball hitter, though.
   145. Tschingsch Posted: March 07, 2013 at 11:29 PM (#4383566)
Damnit, why couldn't Comcast have been one of the cable suppliers to allow online viewing for this, I'm missing me some Honkbal... damn you rain!!!!
   146. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 11:35 PM (#4383574)

Tschingsch, while I do not know exactly, I heard that there are parts of the internet where... y'know. Just... y'know.
   147. Tschingsch Posted: March 07, 2013 at 11:37 PM (#4383577)
Yeah, but right now the part of the internet I heard rumors about is only showing the Ven/DR game.
   148. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 11:42 PM (#4383580)
Curt Smith. HR. 1-0 Netherlands. Honkbal Fever. Catch it.

yeah but..

1. it's a day game on a working day

2. in a few hours the same stadium will host a game that EVERYONE in Japan (and Taiwan) probably will watch

It would be super super interesting if Dutch can beat Cuba
   150. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 07, 2013 at 11:42 PM (#4383582)
Honkbal ahead!
   151. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 07, 2013 at 11:47 PM (#4383588)
I for one welcome our new Honkbal overlords.
   152. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 07, 2013 at 11:48 PM (#4383589)
What the hell was Simmons doing there? That is some awful baserunning.
   153. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 11:49 PM (#4383590)
Oh, not a good example of baserunning by Andrelton Simmons. But the Dutch have already run the Cuban pitcher out of town... oh, Victor Mesa...
   154. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 07, 2013 at 11:50 PM (#4383591)
Venezuela is at risk of being mercy ruled. That would be crazy embarassing.

Hugo isn't even in his grave yet to roll over...
   156. Gamingboy Posted: March 07, 2013 at 11:55 PM (#4383598)
Oh, for a second there I thought Balentien was going to make it 5-0.
   157. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:03 AM (#4383604)
Gorgeous double play by the DR.
   158. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:03 AM (#4383606)
Andrelton Simmons.
   159. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:07 AM (#4383609)
Seriously, Andrelton Simmons. That was a great play.
   160. Uncle Willy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:09 AM (#4383610)
Why is MLB Network sticking with DR-Venezuela instead of showing the Netherlands game?

Sweet DP started by Reyes.
   161. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:15 AM (#4383612)
@Dbacks

If @cactusleagueaz games are rained out tomorrow, fans w/ a #SpringTraining ticket can go to Chase Field & buy @WBCBaseball Fri. tix for $5

I checked and saw that the USA-Mexico game is basically sold out save for the highest deck, so I'm guessing this is more a ploy to make sure Canada-Italy has a good crowd.
   162. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:17 AM (#4383615)
C'mon Rodney, make quick work of the DR so it switches over to honkbal.
   163. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:22 AM (#4383619)
Somebody needs to make GIFs of Victor Mesa.
   164. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:23 AM (#4383621)
I know momentum is tomorrow's starting pitcher, but the DR looks very dangerous.
   165. Tschingsch Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:24 AM (#4383623)
Finally... Honkbal time!!!
   166. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:29 AM (#4383626)
Finally... Honkbal time!!!

Live all the time like it is Honkbal time.
   167. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:34 AM (#4383629)
Okay, this might be the best fielding infield in the tourney.
   168. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:34 AM (#4383631)
I wonder how much you could gain by having a infield with three shortstops.
   169. Tschingsch Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:35 AM (#4383632)
Imagine if Profar agreed to play...
   170. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:35 AM (#4383633)
And they don't even have Profar on the team!
   171. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:35 AM (#4383634)
Okay, somebody owes somebody a coke.
   172. Tschingsch Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:37 AM (#4383636)
While I know it technically refers to Germans, it think it's appropriate that instead of a coke, I get a Pennsylvania Dutch Birch Beer.
   173. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:39 AM (#4383637)
Hah! Fair enough.
   174. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:40 AM (#4383638)
Sounds like Andruw Jones has a future as a coach, or at least a recruiter.
   175. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:43 AM (#4383639)
Does Victor Mesa ever remove those gloves?
   176. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:43 AM (#4383640)
Anyone know why Victor Mesa wears gloves?

Edit: oh, come on.
   177. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:45 AM (#4383641)
Truly, Good Criplle Hitter, the primates are moving ever closer to a hive mind.
   178. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:53 AM (#4383645)
Honkbal knows defense.
   179. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:56 AM (#4383647)
Give me a infield of shortstops, and the demons of hell will be unable to reach the outfield.
   180. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:57 AM (#4383648)
Is the fake to third, throw to first move a balk in the WBC?
   181. Tschingsch Posted: March 08, 2013 at 12:58 AM (#4383651)
Yes, I believe they said that in the 1st round.
   182. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:05 AM (#4383656)
HOOOONK HOOOOONK!
   183. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:10 AM (#4383660)
I wonder if the Dutch person in the Fan Cave is sick of all of the honkbal jokes that no doubt are being said...
   184. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:11 AM (#4383664)
"why do these people keep talking so excitedly about the bases?"
   185. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:13 AM (#4383668)
Ah, so THAT'S what Victor Mesa's gloves are for!
   186. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:13 AM (#4383669)
If Mesa's coated his gloves with vaseline or something he'd immediately become my favourite manager in baseball.

Edit: for ####'s sake. Hive mind, disengage!
   187. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:14 AM (#4383671)
TOUCH ALL THE HONKS!
   188. Tschingsch Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:14 AM (#4383672)
YES!!!!!
   189. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:14 AM (#4383673)
SCHOOOOOOOOOOP! HONKBAL HERO!
   190. Tschingsch Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:14 AM (#4383675)
oh wait... JA!!!!!
   191. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:17 AM (#4383677)
"why do these people keep talking so excitedly about the bases?"

She seems to be taking it in stride:

@JulesUnlimited

HOMERUN!! <3 #Honk! #wbc
   192. RollingWave Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:20 AM (#4383680)
WOW, if Dutch and Taiwan both wins today that's going to blow people's mind
   193. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:21 AM (#4383682)
That would be awesome, but you're getting a little ahead of yourself. The Dutch still need to win, for instance.
   194. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:21 AM (#4383683)
Yeah, it is getting ahead. The Cubans can strike with a big inning with ease.
   195. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:24 AM (#4383685)
9 outs away.
   196. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:24 AM (#4383686)
Jeez, imagine if Chien-Ming Wang had this infield behind him. He'd be able to have a double play with nobody on base.
   197. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:27 AM (#4383687)
Chien-Ming Wang would have an ERA below 2 with this infield.

edit: That was a comment on #196, not another sign of the BTF hive mind.
   198. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:31 AM (#4383690)
Y'know, if this tournament is the last time the Western World sees Andruw Jones, at least he's leaving with a good impression.
   199. RollingWave Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:32 AM (#4383692)
wow, one more blow here and the games basically over.
   200. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:33 AM (#4383693)
Can they make Mesa take the gloves off? This is getting interesting.
