There's gotta be some gunk on Mesa's gloves, right?
   202. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:33 AM (#4383695)
Victor Mesa is a magnificent bastard, isn't he?
   203. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:33 AM (#4383696)
coke to good cripple hitter.
   204. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:33 AM (#4383697)
I'd say pine tar at a minimum. Someone should email Derek Zumsteg about this.
   205. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:34 AM (#4383698)
Coke to the other guys.
   206. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:35 AM (#4383699)
Wow, huge mistake by the Cuban pitcher there not going for the sure out.
   207. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:35 AM (#4383700)
The contrast in defense between these two teams is remarkable.
   208. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:36 AM (#4383704)
Cuba so lucky that Smith basically hit it straight to Gourriel.
   209. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:36 AM (#4383705)
It must help so much as a country with fairly thin pitching to have very good defense.

That was lucky for Cuba.

eta: Cokes all around.

lol bunt single
   211. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:38 AM (#4383708)
Reasonably sure that if he was born in America, Victor Mesa would be the Charles Barkley of Baseball.
   212. RollingWave Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:39 AM (#4383709)
Also, I'd totally hire Mesa for a MLB gig if that's possible, that would be hilarious if he keep walking to the mound with his glvoe on
   213. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:40 AM (#4383710)

I wonder what would happen if Mesa ever managed against Ozzie Guillen.
   214. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:40 AM (#4383711)
I don't know, he seems to be fairly incompetent in his attempts to doctor the ball. Maybe more like Maury Wills?
   215. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:41 AM (#4383712)
Aww, come on. Put this game out of reach, Ricardo!
   216. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:41 AM (#4383714)

Selig would be all over that. If someone could be dispatched to the Red Sox dugout to make sure Francona's wore a shirt under his pullover, someone would be dispatched to shake hands with Mesa before, during, and after every start.
   217. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:42 AM (#4383715)
Cuba keeps this a game.
   218. RollingWave Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:43 AM (#4383716)
come on Ricardo, even I could have done that.
   219. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:43 AM (#4383718)
Hope the Dutch don't regret failing to score there.
   220. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:47 AM (#4383721)
The obnoxious Cuba fan that the showed immediately after the home run deserves to get gif'ed.
   221. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:47 AM (#4383722)
Maybe the Yankees should kidnap Gourriel, stage it as a defection, and have him play 3B?
   222. RollingWave Posted: March 08, 2013 at 01:48 AM (#4383724)
oh oh... time to cross fingers

You could probably make a passable road trip comedy out of that concept.

I'm surprised they haven't already send commando teams into Cuba to kidna ball players

6 outs away!

Looooong single.
   228. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:01 AM (#4383735)
Schooper-duper!

(shut up, I know it doesn't rhyme)
   229. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:02 AM (#4383736)
Jonathan Schoop is tournament MVP for the Dutch so far, I'd say.
   230. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:02 AM (#4383737)
Once again Mesa is spending the pitching change rubbing the ball with his gloves. Someone needs to swipe his gloves, this Gaylord Perry routine is fascinating.
   231. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:05 AM (#4383740)
Mesa is such a dick. It's wonderful.

   233. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:12 AM (#4383743)
That one insurance run could be huge, but Cuba has the big bats coming.
   234. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:15 AM (#4383744)
OK, I'm going to go to bed hoping that the Dutch can hold on. Good luck Taiwan, too!
   235. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:16 AM (#4383745)
Scott, if the Dutch blow it, I'm blaming you.
   236. Honkie Kong Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:21 AM (#4383746)
I know Schoop has been good, but the Honkbal MVP so far has to be Simmons.
Might be fan bias here from my side. But has got on base, hit for power and played great defence.
   237. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:21 AM (#4383747)
I understand that most players would do that, and I understand it's the umpires' job to make the right call, and I understand the Dutch would probably win this game anyway. That said, that charade makes me want to root against them.
   238. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:22 AM (#4383748)
Biff, the way I look at it is that it's obvious that the Cubans would do it as well. I'd be more pissed off at the Umpire than anything.
   239. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:23 AM (#4383749)
I don't know, on the one hand you've got the Gaylord Perry of Cuba, on the other hand you have... who was the player who had a letter in a safety deposit box saying whether he caught the ball on a similar play? Sam Rice. It's not like Cuba's a clean team.

But yeah, that's some clownshoes honkbal.
   240. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:24 AM (#4383751)
I think this is that call was the umpires' revenge for the gloves.
   241. Devin has a deep burning passion for fuzzy socks Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:25 AM (#4383752)
I think Fidel just told somebody to go find the Curacao invasion plans.
   242. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:25 AM (#4383753)
Well, yeah, I want to root against Cuba already, which poses a dilemma of sorts. I guess I'll just contain my disdain for the player who just did that.
   243. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:28 AM (#4383754)
I lied about going to bed. Honkbal for life!
   244. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:35 AM (#4383757)
Schoop up with men on all of the bases.
   245. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:37 AM (#4383759)
I don't understand why Marquez doesn't just toss Mesa over this glove thing.
   246. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:39 AM (#4383760)
I don't understand why Marquez doesn't just toss Mesa over this glove thing.

I feel like Mesa is trying to give off the impression that he would kill Marquez with his gloved hands as a form of deterrence.
   247. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:39 AM (#4383761)
No fingerprints, the perfect crime!
   248. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:41 AM (#4383762)
Wonder who the Dutch send out here. Also, I wonder who Victor Mesa will ritually sacrifice after the game.
   249. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:42 AM (#4383763)
I think Marquez is borderline bemused by it all. Either that or he doesn't want to toss a manager during a WBC game for rubbing a ball with a pair of gloves. I assume that there's nothing on the gloves, otherwise why wouldn't Marquez toss him?

It's bizarre behaviour for a manager.
   250. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:44 AM (#4383764)
It's a giant!
   251. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:44 AM (#4383765)
Loek Van Mil is quite tall. Also, why is Statia in the game now?
   252. Honkie Kong Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:44 AM (#4383766)
Its a double elimination right? Cuba will have to lose to JP or TW to get knocked out?
   253. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:45 AM (#4383767)
Yeah, it's double elimination.

#237-240: For those of us not watching along at home, what did the Dutch do?
   255. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:47 AM (#4383769)
That was a very solid victory by the honkballers. Really looking forward to them trying to make it to the semis.

#237-240: For those of us not watching along at home, what did the Dutch do?

Ball hit near the camera well on the first-base side. Dutch player reaches for it but misses, leans down into the well and comes up with the ball, holding it in his gloves. The umpires apparently had a blocked view and didn't see that the catch wasn't made, so they called the batter out when they saw the player come up with the ball.
   260. Tschingsch Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:51 AM (#4383775)
254: Foul ball dropped over the fence, and Smith picked it up on his way up and they called the batter out.
   261. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:51 AM (#4383776)
#237-240: For those of us not watching along at home, what did the Dutch do?

Foul ball near the wall on the first base line. First baseman raced after it. It ticked off his glove and he fell into the camera bay. He came up with the ball in his glove, acting like he'd caught it. The umpire was out of position and called it an out, but replay showed he didn't have the ball even when he was tumbling over the wall.

Cokes for everyone, but I'll rub them with my gloves first.
   262. Tschingsch Posted: March 08, 2013 at 02:51 AM (#4383777)
It's a soda party tonight...
   263. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 03:00 AM (#4383779)
#Honkbal is trending in the USA. I do believe this is the pinnacle of human civilization.
   264. Honkie Kong Posted: March 08, 2013 at 03:20 AM (#4383782)
Yeah, it's double elimination.
Thanks!

Japan kinda ran themself out of the first inning. not a good idea.

Also, it's insane, Taiwan's crowd is basically louder than the Japanese crowd in this game
   280. Random Transaction Generator Posted: March 08, 2013 at 09:27 AM (#4383837)
In Canada, the game is on SportsNet One (501 on the Rogers cable network).
I was in the other room for a few minutes, and when I heard the loud roars, I thought Japan had taken the lead in the top of the 9th.
Imagine my surprise when I realized the loud crowd was for CT taking the lead.

As RW says, CT's fans are LOUD in there.

And there is STILL the bottom of the 9th to go!

Also, this reinforces my desire to attend a baseball game in Japan at some point in my life.

kamakazi dive to stop a sac bunt... oh my god this is off the charts insane.

though it does put Japan in a bind, they alerady used a lot of pitchers and now have to call another one without notice at the worst time possible.
