As much as I like Dickey, I was never crazy about having him on Team USA, because it often takes a lot of Spring Training for him to get the knuckler working right.

Man, I almost just did a spit take. The pbp guy on the international feed just said "JP Arencibia, hit just .233, but a solid defender." If ever there was a proof of Nichols' Law of Catcher Defense, that was it.

Thats the rub, isn't it? They don't need the US to win this thing, and people in the US don't even really have to care, but they can't have viable tournament without the US being the host, and obviously the country with the most available talent. If they host this outside the US, we send a minor league squad, which completely defeats the purpose. I won't say the WBC is destined for failure, but it will be 50 years before anyone in the US really cares, if it lasts that long. The pitchers just aren't ready, because the best ones all have far more important things to worry about.

Is there anyone in the US that's a real baseball fan that would rather see the US win the WBC than the team they root for win the World Series?

Shredder: Given the fact that the WBC is ultimately meant to make $$$ from established baseball markets like Japan and the DR while building up new markets elsewhere, I'm guessing the WBC will go until the $$$ goes away.

OK, so if Canada beats Mexico tomorrow, then the US advances by winning their 2 remaining games. There also could be a 3-way tie at 1-2 if the US loses to Italy and beats Canada.

If Mexico wins, then the US has to win their last 2 games for a 3-way tie at 2-1. Mexico would definitely advance. The US would advance if they beat Italy by 3 runs. Italy advances if the US wins by 1. If the US wins by 2, I think that they're tied and the US wins the tiebreaker by having the head-to-head win, but I'm not 100% sure.

So because Canada got trounced they're essentially screwed for tie breakers involving Italy. So they need to beat Mexico and the US, and the Italy-US game is irrelevant to their positioning right?

Has there been a more consistently disappointing team in WBC play than Canada? I think their first game in 2006 when they beat the US is their only win.

it is being reported locally that there were soemthing like 50 cases of emergency reported last night of folks fainting or suffering heart attack watching the Taiwan vs Japan game in Taiwan ...

here we go, do or die vs Cuba, I think our chances of winning is like 10%, but please prove me wrong.
