In knuckler, we trust.
   102. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 10:13 PM (#4384657)
Uh oh, dunno about the knuckler so far.
   103. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 10:18 PM (#4384668)
2-0 far from insurmountable.
   104. Sheer Tim Foli Posted: March 08, 2013 at 10:21 PM (#4384671)
We'll see what Gallardo's stuff is like.
   105. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 10:23 PM (#4384676)
Team USA needs to show some patience, this a good AB by Rollins, for example.
   106. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 10:27 PM (#4384681)
If Dickey doesn't have a better 2nd, Team USA is in big trouble, and then Jon Morosi may do something rash.
   107. Sheer Tim Foli Posted: March 08, 2013 at 10:38 PM (#4384689)
With the pitch limits both sides will be seeing a lot of the bullpens. Lots of scoring to come I suspect.
   108. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 10:40 PM (#4384691)
Well played, Mauer.
   109. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 10:42 PM (#4384694)
America doomed.
   110. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 10:51 PM (#4384703)
David Wright probably just saved a run, given how effing huge Chase Field is.
   111. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 08, 2013 at 10:54 PM (#4384705)
This is not the start we needed. WTF Dickey
   112. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 10:56 PM (#4384706)
While this isn't a MUST WIN for Team USA, it would be very, very helpful... but Dickey this bad is not making one confident.
   113. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 08, 2013 at 10:57 PM (#4384707)
Torre knows he can bring in a relief pitcher right?
   114. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 10:59 PM (#4384709)
Well, Torre also has Giancarlo Stanton up 7th, so I am sort of worrying about his faculties.
   115. Devin has a deep burning passion for fuzzy socks Posted: March 08, 2013 at 10:59 PM (#4384710)
As much as I like Dickey, I was never crazy about having him on Team USA, because it often takes a lot of Spring Training for him to get the knuckler working right.
   116. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 11:01 PM (#4384711)
Okay, Team USA's objective is to get Yovani Gallardo out of this game.
   117. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 08, 2013 at 11:06 PM (#4384713)
Man, I almost just did a spit take. The pbp guy on the international feed just said "JP Arencibia, hit just .233, but a solid defender." If ever there was a proof of Nichols' Law of Catcher Defense, that was it.
   118. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 11:18 PM (#4384719)
It's not your fault, RA Dickey. Actually, it kind of is. We're deporting you to Canada.
   119. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 08, 2013 at 11:18 PM (#4384720)
Second time through will be better right? Right?
   120. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 11:22 PM (#4384723)
That might be it for Gallardo. Thank god.
   121. JJ1986 Posted: March 08, 2013 at 11:29 PM (#4384726)
Damnit, Mauer!
   122. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 11:30 PM (#4384727)
Rooting interest table:
1. USA (Where I live)
2. Netherlands (honkbal)
3. Puerto Rico (That country's baseball culture needs a boost, and they are sort-of America)
4. Taipei (similar to Puerto Rico, they need a boost)
   123. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 11:33 PM (#4384732)
With Jeter not around, David Wright is Captain America, right?
   124. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 08, 2013 at 11:35 PM (#4384734)
I think that's right GB.
   125. Gamingboy Posted: March 08, 2013 at 11:37 PM (#4384736)
Watch, Team USA is going to end up going 2-1 in this, and get knocked out due to tie-breakers, and then the WBC will change the format again next time.
   126. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 08, 2013 at 11:55 PM (#4384741)
Ok here we go
   127. RMc's desperate, often sordid world Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:02 AM (#4384743)
This is pathetic. 2006 all over again.
   128. Honkie Kong Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:02 AM (#4384744)
This mexican bullpen is eventually going to kill them.

Think Italy might in trouble in case of a 3 way 2-1 tie.
   129. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:02 AM (#4384745)
Nicely squandered. Why let Arencibia bat there? We don't have a better choice?
   130. Gamingboy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:04 AM (#4384746)
Stupid Dickey. He's probably been brainwashed by the Canucks to work against us.
   131. Morph Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:08 AM (#4384748)
Fire Torre!
   132. Gamingboy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:08 AM (#4384749)
Fire Torre!

Maddux for Manager!
   133. RMc's desperate, often sordid world Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:09 AM (#4384750)
Abridged version of a conversation I had with my wife about the WBC today:

"Who's playing for the USA? Prince Fielder?"
"Um, no."
"That kid in Washington you're always talking about?"
"Bryce Harper, and no."
"That other kid out in California? Trout something?"
"Mike Trout. No."
"Then why are they bothering if they can't get any good players?"
"They have good players, like Jimmy Rollins."
"Isn't he, like, old...?"
"Sigh."
   134. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:17 AM (#4384752)
Nope, nevermind, Puerto Rico had a Dutch special.

Is that what we're calling double plays now?

I get back from being at a wake and this is what I see from the USA? Ugh.
   135. Gamingboy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:17 AM (#4384753)
RMC, what about Mauer? Don't the ladies love Mauer?
   136. JJ1986 Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:19 AM (#4384754)
Time for Mexico's answer to Sandy Koufax.
   137. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:19 AM (#4384756)
Those can't be real Americans, they're wearing USA soccer jerseys.
   138. Gamingboy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:21 AM (#4384757)
Stupid Hosmer. As your punishment, you get to keep playing for the Royals.
   139. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:27 AM (#4384759)
Goddamnit Giancarlo.
   140. Gamingboy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:27 AM (#4384760)
That's a HR in most other stadiums. Stupid Chase Field. Stupid Umpire.
   141. RMc's desperate, often sordid world Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:27 AM (#4384761)
400 foot out. Great.
Should be interesting watching the USA have to qualify for 2017.
   142. Gamingboy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:30 AM (#4384763)
Should be interesting watching the USA have to qualify for 2017.

Nah, MLB will either change the rules or put them in a qualifying pool with Monaco, San Marino and Grenada.
   143. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:34 AM (#4384765)
I like the nickname dutch special, I will use it this year and see how it goes.
   144. Gamingboy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:35 AM (#4384767)
DAMNIT HOSMER, WE'RE BREAKING YOUR ARM AFTER THIS AND REPLACING YOU WITH PRINCE FIELDER LIKE WE SHOULD HAVE DONE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

This.

If it comes even close to as well-used as "Cornflake", which I also believe I had a role in dubbing, I'll be happy.
   147. Gamingboy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:46 AM (#4384774)
Or maybe Team USA can trade Hosmer for Rizzo. I mean, go back far enough and Hosmer must have some sort of Italian ancestry in him. Those Romans got around.
   148. Shredder Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:52 AM (#4384776)
Nah, MLB will either change the rules or put them in a qualifying pool with Monaco, San Marino and Grenada.
Thats the rub, isn't it? They don't need the US to win this thing, and people in the US don't even really have to care, but they can't have viable tournament without the US being the host, and obviously the country with the most available talent. If they host this outside the US, we send a minor league squad, which completely defeats the purpose. I won't say the WBC is destined for failure, but it will be 50 years before anyone in the US really cares, if it lasts that long. The pitchers just aren't ready, because the best ones all have far more important things to worry about.

Is there anyone in the US that's a real baseball fan that would rather see the US win the WBC than the team they root for win the World Series?
   149. Gamingboy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 12:58 AM (#4384779)
Shredder: Given the fact that the WBC is ultimately meant to make $$$ from established baseball markets like Japan and the DR while building up new markets elsewhere, I'm guessing the WBC will go until the $$$ goes away.
   150. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: March 09, 2013 at 01:03 AM (#4384782)
Honestly I dont care if USA wins a game, its more fun to watch the other countries play
   151. Gamingboy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 01:18 AM (#4384787)
Okay, so maybe we'll let Hosmer off with a warning.
   152. Gamingboy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 01:19 AM (#4384788)
Stanton has JUST MISSED two HRs.
   153. Morph Posted: March 09, 2013 at 01:26 AM (#4384790)
I think Lucroy should start over Arenciba.
   154. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 09, 2013 at 01:28 AM (#4384791)

I think Lucroy should start over Arenciba.

I understand that they wanted JP to catch Dickey, but other than that shouldn't Mauer and (I suppose) Zobrist start over both of them? Or is Mauer not being allowed to catch?
   155. Gamingboy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 01:30 AM (#4384792)
Team USA's deficit is going to be AT MOST 3. That is a ton better then 4 or 5.
   156. Gamingboy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 01:31 AM (#4384794)
Lol Bobby Valentine commercial is actually funny.
   157. Gamingboy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 01:33 AM (#4384795)
Sergio Romo.
   158. Shredder Posted: March 09, 2013 at 01:37 AM (#4384800)
Embarrassing. I'd rather we just didn't field a team.
   159. Gamingboy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 01:40 AM (#4384802)
Stupid Dickey/Torre.

Go Canada tomorrow.
   160. Devin has a deep burning passion for fuzzy socks Posted: March 09, 2013 at 01:52 AM (#4384806)
OK, so if Canada beats Mexico tomorrow, then the US advances by winning their 2 remaining games. There also could be a 3-way tie at 1-2 if the US loses to Italy and beats Canada.

If Mexico wins, then the US has to win their last 2 games for a 3-way tie at 2-1. Mexico would definitely advance. The US would advance if they beat Italy by 3 runs. Italy advances if the US wins by 1. If the US wins by 2, I think that they're tied and the US wins the tiebreaker by having the head-to-head win, but I'm not 100% sure.
   161. Greg K Posted: March 09, 2013 at 05:20 AM (#4384840)
So because Canada got trounced they're essentially screwed for tie breakers involving Italy. So they need to beat Mexico and the US, and the Italy-US game is irrelevant to their positioning right?

Has there been a more consistently disappointing team in WBC play than Canada? I think their first game in 2006 when they beat the US is their only win.
   162. RollingWave Posted: March 09, 2013 at 06:17 AM (#4384844)
Don't worry, if the US team A lost they still have team B and C (aka Italy and Spain.)

it is being reported locally that there were soemthing like 50 cases of emergency reported last night of folks fainting or suffering heart attack watching the Taiwan vs Japan game in Taiwan ...

here we go, do or die vs Cuba, I think our chances of winning is like 10%, but please prove me wrong.
   163. RollingWave Posted: March 09, 2013 at 06:27 AM (#4384845)
This is probably the largest crowd in japan not involving Japan, and it's basically 100% Taiwan crowd, holy ####
   164. RollingWave Posted: March 09, 2013 at 06:32 AM (#4384848)
arrrgh... 2 run HR right off the bat.
   165. RollingWave Posted: March 09, 2013 at 06:39 AM (#4384849)
1 AB too late for that single Chen... BAH!!!!
   166. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:32 AM (#4384857)
Doh!

E1, but that was all on the 2b being late to the cover ...
   167. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:34 AM (#4384859)
Well, that's that.

Too bad, 1 more strike yesterday and this would have been a very different group.
   168. phineas Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:42 AM (#4384863)
It's not over til it's over, innit?
   169. RollingWave Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:53 AM (#4384867)
all I ask for is to not get mercy ruled.... is there mercy rule in the 2nd round?
   170. Joe Kehoskie Posted: March 09, 2013 at 08:00 AM (#4384868)
Yes. I believe the only game without it is the championship game.

EDIT: Mercy rule is only in first two rounds.
   171. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 09, 2013 at 08:06 AM (#4384869)
Really feel for Taiwan...but they were an awesome team to watch. Lets hope the Honkballers knock off Japan tomorrow at least.
   172. RollingWave Posted: March 09, 2013 at 08:25 AM (#4384871)
Mercy rule time, arrrrrrrrragh. ONE ####### STRIKE.

Though this should hopefully rekindle interest in the CPBL again, also it is being reported that Manny will fly into Taiwan next week and sign.
   173. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 10, 2013 at 06:44 PM (#4385787)
Torre is blowing this...
