Miguel Tejada still going!

Last I saw of the early game Cuba was up

So...how do you qualify to be able to play for a country? What link do these guys have with Spain besides being able to speak Spanish?
   3. JJ1986 Posted: March 09, 2013 at 01:10 PM (#4384971)
Someone posted yesterday that you qualify if one of your grandparents qualified for (but didn't necessarily hold) citizenry from that country.
   4. Joe Kehoskie Posted: March 09, 2013 at 01:27 PM (#4384980)
Under an immigration law Spain passed a few years ago, Spain will give papers to just about anyone with Spanish ancestry. I read somewhere that, under this law, something like a third of all Cubans were eligible, although a huge percentage of them would have trouble meeting the documentation requirements and/or paying the fees.

Well that's an interesting double post.

yeah i saw Tejada and did a double take there.

Still, the Dominican infield is ungodly,

So why are half the teams playing in the second round while others still have first round games
   9. Joe Kehoskie Posted: March 09, 2013 at 01:49 PM (#4385001)
They built in some extra days for the teams making the long trip over from Japan for the third round.
   10. Bitter Calculus Instructor Posted: March 09, 2013 at 02:43 PM (#4385026)
[9] The annoying thing about that, though is the winners of Pool 1 are assured of having their two best starters available for the semi-finals and finals, while the Pool 2 winners aren't.
   11. Bitter Calculus Instructor Posted: March 09, 2013 at 03:59 PM (#4385042)
There have been a lot of big 1st innings in the WBC so far. And here is Canada with a 4 spot in the first. A Canadian win certainly makes things easier for USA.
   12. Bitter Calculus Instructor Posted: March 09, 2013 at 04:27 PM (#4385046)
Jeez, nobody here to chat today. Guess I should probably be getting work done anyway.
   13. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 09, 2013 at 04:29 PM (#4385048)
I just got in. I'm trying to watch the game while filtering out Rick Sutcliffe's 'let the managers throw two towels out' take on replay. "It'll take 10 seconds! Armando Galarraga lost a perfect game!"

   17. Yardape Posted: March 09, 2013 at 05:06 PM (#4385057)
Is it just me, or did Robinson not tag Garcia? The ump didn't call him out right away, I wonder if he was waiting for Garcia to touch the plate.
   18. Esmailyn Gonzalez Sr. Posted: March 09, 2013 at 05:08 PM (#4385058)
Andrew Albers does not have it today...yikes
   19. Esmailyn Gonzalez Sr. Posted: March 09, 2013 at 05:09 PM (#4385059)
I don't think Robinson touched Garcia, but I also didn't ever see Garcia touch the plate.
   20. Tschingsch Posted: March 09, 2013 at 05:15 PM (#4385062)
I hate it when I rewind my DVR to see something again and then forget to ffwd it during a commercial break and read something here that hasn't happened yet. "How can Robinson be involved in play with Garcia when he's on 2nd?... oh, crap...
   21. Yardape Posted: March 09, 2013 at 05:23 PM (#4385064)
I don't think Robinson touched Garcia, but I also didn't ever see Garcia touch the plate.

Garcia didn't touch the plate. That's what I was wondering; if Garcia had just touched the plate instead of walking to the dugout, would he have been called safe?
   22. Yardape Posted: March 09, 2013 at 05:32 PM (#4385067)
I don't like that bunt, although the odds of the bottom of Canada's order driving in a run are low, so maybe it's not so bad.
   23. Yardape Posted: March 09, 2013 at 05:36 PM (#4385070)
ORR! Makes me eat my words.
   24. Tschingsch Posted: March 09, 2013 at 05:48 PM (#4385073)
Bobby V should have had a piece of chicken in his other hand...
   25. Chris Fluit Posted: March 09, 2013 at 06:21 PM (#4385087)
Votto and Morneau are the Spahn and Sain of the Canadian lineup. It's two MVPs and then a whole bunch of who dats, has beens and never was's.
   26. Bitter Calculus Instructor Posted: March 09, 2013 at 06:22 PM (#4385088)
Looking ahead, anyone know what the pitching matchup for USA-Canada will be?
   27. Yardape Posted: March 09, 2013 at 06:27 PM (#4385091)
Canada is starting Jameson Taillon with Mark Hardy following him out of the pen against the USA. I don't know about the U.S.
   28. JJ1986 Posted: March 09, 2013 at 06:38 PM (#4385095)
US is starting Holland.
   29. JJ1986 Posted: March 09, 2013 at 06:57 PM (#4385104)

Rear naked choke!
   31. Yardape Posted: March 09, 2013 at 06:59 PM (#4385107)
Wow, a brawl. Didn't see that coming.
   32. JJ1986 Posted: March 09, 2013 at 06:59 PM (#4385108)
I had the game on mute. Why is Leon hitting people on purpose right after a warning?
   33. BourbonSamurai, vassal of the Harpsburg Empire Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:00 PM (#4385109)
It's those hot blooded canadians! Can't be trusted!

   35. Yardape Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:00 PM (#4385111)
C'mon Canada, don't taunt the fans. That's bush.
   36. Esmailyn Gonzalez Sr. Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:02 PM (#4385112)
I think Canada is upset because Denis Boucher got something in the face that was thrown from the stands.
Edit: Full water bottle
   37. Yardape Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:02 PM (#4385113)
Oh, I didn't see the projectile at first. That's a little different.
   38. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:04 PM (#4385116)
Turned it off wt 8-3. What happened
   39. JJ1986 Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:05 PM (#4385117)
Cale Iorg hurled it right back.
   40. Tschingsch Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:05 PM (#4385119)
Looks like Luis Cruz threw the 1st punch - I wonder if that gets him kicked out of the tournament if they happen to advance.
   41. BourbonSamurai, vassal of the Harpsburg Empire Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:06 PM (#4385120)

Yeah, that announcer was not prepared with cool basebrawl lines.
   42. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:06 PM (#4385121)
Apparently Alfredo aceves is a borderline psycho
   43. BourbonSamurai, vassal of the Harpsburg Empire Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:06 PM (#4385122)
If a suspended player cannot be reinstated for the remainder of the tournament, Canada should just put some designated hockey goons on their roster and have them crowd the plate.
   44. JJ1986 Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:07 PM (#4385123)
Cruz just hit a Canadian (I think it's Scott Mathieson, but he's wearing a pullover) in the face while everyone was standing around.
   45. Esmailyn Gonzalez Sr. Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:07 PM (#4385124)
WJ: Chris Robinson bunt single, pitcher threw at Tosoni, umpire warned both benches, next pitch right in Tosoni's back.

Mexican Gangster???
   47. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:09 PM (#4385127)
Christ what did Aceves do? Please tell me it's enough for the Sox to punt him.
   48. JJ1986 Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:11 PM (#4385128)
Aceves acted crazed, but didn't get much in. He was being held by Adam Loewen for most of it.
   49. JJ1986 Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:12 PM (#4385131)
Was Tosoni thrown out? He didn't seem to do much.

I'm surprised there are still people who don't know this. I'm with Jose on this one, I really want the Sox to get rid of him.
   51. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:22 PM (#4385136)
So by my accounting the US needs to win both games. If they lose tonight and win tomorrow they'll probably lose the tiebreaker to Canada among the three 1-2 teams and if they win tonight but lose tomorrow Canada and Italy would be through at 2-1
   52. BourbonSamurai, vassal of the Harpsburg Empire Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:23 PM (#4385138)
John Axford is canadian? I did not know this.

Wait?

What??

Why???
   54. JJ1986 Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:24 PM (#4385141)
they'll probably lose the tiebreaker to Canada

Depending on what happens in the next 5 minutes, I think they'd need to win by 6. Canada is +7 right now (in non-Italy games). US is -3.
   55. Double-Spin Mechanic Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:27 PM (#4385142)
I'd like to see as many Canadians as possible suspended for at least 1 game, but I really have to pin like 93% of this on Mexico.
   56. JJ1986 Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:27 PM (#4385143)
It looks like Luis Cruz is some kind of crazy person.
   57. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:29 PM (#4385144)

What??

He's a very unpleasant player to have to root for and he's not good enough to make up for that.
   58. The Yankee Clapper Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:30 PM (#4385145)
Late to the party, but it seems like there may be some suspensions coming soon.
   59. The Yankee Clapper Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:33 PM (#4385149)
. . . but I really have to pin like 93% of this on Mexico.

Seems like they didn't understand why Canada was "running up the score". Maybe somebody should have gone over that.
   60. Tschingsch Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:33 PM (#4385150)
I blame Russell Martin for all this.

He's a very unpleasant player to have to root for and he's not good enough to make up for that.

Again, why?

Aceves never seemed a "very unpleasant player" as a Yankee*, so I'm honestly not sure what you're referring here ...
   62. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:37 PM (#4385153)
*Or even, as a Yankees' fan, as a Red Sox *after* he became a Sox player ...

EDIT - Double post. Don't refresh.
   64. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:43 PM (#4385155)
Seriously, Zambrano???

That wasn't even sorta close ... you nitwit!
   65. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:44 PM (#4385156)
He just is kind of an ass. I don't think I can explain it well but too often it's just a matter of whether he feels like being mentally involved. For example there's already been a moment this spring when he basically just checked out on throwing proper batting practice and got ####### out by Farrell. Some games it seems like be is just firing fastballs down the middle and going for the best.

The best I can tell you is that he's kind of got a "Manny being Manny" vibe. Manny could be endearing in his own way though and of course he was incredibly good so you could tolerate it. With Aceves he's just not as cuddly as Manny was.
   66. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: March 09, 2013 at 07:52 PM (#4385161)
[65] Hmmmm ... I can't say I understand it [based on how I saw him act], but I haven't really followed him as a Sox, so okay ...
   67. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: March 09, 2013 at 08:37 PM (#4385175)
OK, Mexico is out. The US team moves on if they win against both Italy and Canada. If they lose to Canada, then Italy and Canada move on.

Do I have that right?
   68. Devin has a deep burning passion for fuzzy socks Posted: March 09, 2013 at 08:49 PM (#4385178)
Yes. If they lose to Italy, they can still advance if they beat Canada by 6 runs.

The really fun thing is if they beat Italy, then the Canada game is win and advance, lose and have to go to the qualifiers for 2017. They'd be 4th in the group because of losing head-to-head with Mexico. (Feel free to doubt that they'd actually be sent to qualifiers in any case.)
   69. Gamingboy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 09:10 PM (#4385187)
Okay, I've been under the weather today and actually wasn't able to see much if any of the Mexico-Canada game, but I have to ask:

What type of fools would pick a fight with a bunch of guys who played hockey growing up?
   70. Gamingboy Posted: March 09, 2013 at 09:23 PM (#4385194)
(Feel free to doubt that they'd actually be sent to qualifiers in any case.)

If the USA goes 1-2 and doesn't make it on tie-breakers, they could say that since Team USA won a game they don't need to qualify. This would be consistent on what happened last time, where all of the teams that had to qualify were teams that didn't win a game in the then-double-elimination first round. I haven't seen
   71. Bitter Calculus Instructor Posted: March 09, 2013 at 09:24 PM (#4385197)
Anybody watching the Puerto Rico vs. Venezuela game?
   72. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 09, 2013 at 09:44 PM (#4385203)
Yes. Great atmosphere
   73. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 09, 2013 at 09:49 PM (#4385207)
Venezuela is doomed. They'll have to beat Spain to avoid qualifiers
   74. Double-Spin Mechanic Posted: March 09, 2013 at 09:52 PM (#4385208)
Carlos Zambrano is a bigger asshat than Aceves. And yes, I was watching the Mexico-Canada game.
   75. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 09, 2013 at 09:57 PM (#4385209)
Los Boricuas and Los Dominicanos will advance.

   77. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 09, 2013 at 10:27 PM (#4385220)
Wow. We are a ####### disgrace to baseball.
   78. JJ1986 Posted: March 09, 2013 at 10:28 PM (#4385221)
Can Mauer not catch? I don't understand putting these mediocre players in the lineup/behind the plate.
   79. Bitter Calculus Instructor Posted: March 09, 2013 at 10:30 PM (#4385223)
Things not looking good for Team USA. Hopefully, they can find a way to get some runs against this A-ball flameout.
   80. RMc and His Roster of Rubbish Posted: March 09, 2013 at 10:31 PM (#4385224)
Can we find a pitcher who's not, you know, a complete fossil? (Put a few Tigers in the Italian line-up; Vogelsong will get them out easily.)
   81. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 09, 2013 at 10:31 PM (#4385225)
I can't believe how pissed off I am by this. It is so very frustrating though. How come we can't get our #### together for this tournament while other countries can?
   82. JJ1986 Posted: March 09, 2013 at 10:36 PM (#4385227)
I'd be pissed if I were Zobrist or Victorino and not getting a chance to play at all.

Let's go Italia!!!

So it's like basketball? I'd prefer that a US team figures out how to win with just overwhelming talent, rather than with ludicrously overwhelming talent.
   86. RMc and His Roster of Rubbish Posted: March 09, 2013 at 10:59 PM (#4385243)
Sweet Jesus, this is pathetic. I mean, why is the USA even bothering to send a team if they're going to play like this?

How much better of a lineup could the U.S. put together? Posey instead of Arrencibia, sure, and Trout/McCutcheon/Harper would have been better than Jones. The real gains would be in pitching, but Justin Verlander won't help them score against scrub pitchers.
   92. RMc and His Roster of Rubbish Posted: March 09, 2013 at 11:15 PM (#4385257)
A lineup of the US players who aren't there would win this tournament with ease.

I've been hearing that since he stopped going by Mike. I would think it would be "John Carlo", so either he pronounces it differently or all these announcers aren't doing their homework.

There are numerous catchers i'd put in there instead of mauer, since this is 2013.

And why the hell is he batting 4th?
