Bleh, we get Italy/Venezuela instead of DR/Netherlands on ESPN2? I have no desire to watch Team Guido, who may very well advance against Venezuela's decimated pitching staff.

Rout, rout and rout.
   3. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 10, 2009 at 05:26 PM (#3098126)
i don't know about that, RMc. Every one of these games looks interesting. Australia destroyed a Mexico team full of major leaguers. Netherlands has already beaten DR once and was four outs away from beating PR. Italy just dusted Canada and Venezuela looked like crap against USA.
   4. Home Run Teal & Black Black Black Gone! Posted: March 10, 2009 at 05:31 PM (#3098135)
Weird. Netherlands has the storyline. DR >>>> Venezuela in terms of big name talent. Sure, Italy vs. Venezuela will probably be more competitive, but they probably said the same thing when booking Rocky Balboa vs. Apollo Creed.
   5. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 10, 2009 at 05:42 PM (#3098152)
DR >>>> Venezuela in terms of big name talent

Maybe, but it's close. Venezuela's lineup is stacked: Magglio, Abreu, Miguel Cabrera, Carlo Guillen, Mora. On any given day that lineup could beat anyone; unfortunately, their pitching has looked like crap.

I'm pretty sure that the TV spots were set in advance. Instead of Italy/Venezuela, they probably expected that to be Canada versus Venezuela or USA. And DR/Netherlands was probably thought to be DR/Puerto Rico versus Panama/Netherlands. I can see why they'd opt for the former.

And DR/Netherlands looks more interesting now due to how they got there. If DR had won the first game and lost to PR and then the Dutch had beaten Panama in their second game, you'd have the same matchup, but it would look significantly less compelling.

After yesterday's performance, I'm rooting for whoever is playing against Italy.
   8. Devin has a deep burning passion for fuzzy socks Posted: March 10, 2009 at 05:47 PM (#3098160)
They just wanted to be covered if the US was in the elimination game, is my guess.

I'm hoping for at least 1 unexpected team to make the next round. But I do expect Netherlands to get pounded.
   9. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 10, 2009 at 05:57 PM (#3098167)
One team that really got screwed by the change to double elim. is The Netherlands. They beat the DR, lost to PR. Now they have to play the Dominican Republic again to advance. Its like their first win means nothing; anyone doubt that these guys would drub Panama?
   10. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 06:02 PM (#3098173)
One of the few problems with the Double-Elmination thing is that people don't know what games are coming up, so TV is set on speculation, and Ticket Sales have to rely heavily upon walk-ups (which does not mean good things if the host country gets knocked out or a traditional Baseball power is upset, see Canada).

That said, it still is a ton better than the Round Robin format, which, as I said before, only works in the LLWS.

By the way, starting pitchers (with annotations when needed):

Italy (Adam Ottavino) vs. Venezuela (Enrique Gonzalez)
Ottavino is a Cardinals farmhand born in Brooklyn. Enrique Gonzalez played 4 games for the Padres last year.

Dominican Republic (Ubaldo Jimenez) vs. Netherlands (Tommy Stuifbergen)
Stuifbergen played 7 games for the GCL Twins in 2007 but missed 2008 with a injury.

Haven't found the match-up for Cuba/Aussie yet.
   11. Swedish Chef Posted: March 10, 2009 at 06:10 PM (#3098190)
If nobody else wants to, I'll root for the Italians. So they have players with a fake nationality? So what, so has Serie A.

Forza Azzuri!
   12. Juan V Posted: March 10, 2009 at 06:10 PM (#3098192)
Can anyone come up with a reasonable tiebreaker based on runs scored/allowed (as opposed to 2006's madness)? That would be ideal.
   13. Devin has a deep burning passion for fuzzy socks Posted: March 10, 2009 at 06:13 PM (#3098201)
I was actually wondering back on Saturday if it really made sense for them to use their best pitcher (if it is truly Ponson) in that game, but ask the Canadians about having bullets left in your gun.

Maybe they should change the format like this:

Game 1: A vs. B
Game 2: C vs. D
Game 3: Game 1 winner vs. Game 2 winner, winning team advances
Game 4: Game 1 loser vs. Game 2 loser, losing team eliminated
Game 5: Game 3 loser vs. Game 4 winner.

If Game 5 is not a rematch of Game 1 or 2 with the opposite result* of the first game:
Game 6: Game 3 winner vs. Game 5 winner to determine 1st and 2nd

If Game 5 is a rematch of Game 1 or 2 with the opposite result* of the first game:
Game 6: Replay of Game 5, winner is 2nd place team. Game 3 winner is 1st place team.

That's fairer, but then Game 5 is not necessarily an elimination game, and the Game 3 winner may have a long wait in between games (which is not great with trying to get pitchers work during Spring Training). Just a thought.

(Opposite result = Each team has won 1 game and lost 1 game. Scoring is not counted.)

Went to my high school. Picked at the end of the first round a few years ago, really struggled in AA last season after a good '07 in high-A. I'm excited to watch, didn't even know he was on the team until last night.
   15. Iwakuma Chameleon (jonathan) Posted: March 10, 2009 at 06:31 PM (#3098240)
As a Northeastern student, I will be happily rooting on Adam Ottavino and team Italy.

I fully expect him to get shelled, that being said.

This can be at least partially helped by having the second round games (winner game #1 versus winner game #2 and loser game #1 versus loser #2) be a double header with the same ticket. That way, people can buy a ticket and see their team in a crucial game (either an elimination game or one that determines advancement). If they want, they can set the order of the games based on TV once the matchups are established, but fans would know that all the teams are involved in that session.

It doesn't solve the problem with "game 5" in the series.

I'm not a big fan of how they have scheduled the games this time with having games at the same site on different days. It doesn't really make any sense that the Netherlands played yesterday, but the Dominican Rep played 2 days ago. Seems to give the DR an advantage. Both the Netherlands-PR game and the DR-Panama games should have been the same day (even if you want to sell different tickets to each)

I bought tickets to yesterday's game at Hiram Bithorn Stadium a couple of months ago. I was expecting to see the PR-Dominican Republic matchup since, of course, DR would easily beat Netherlands :(
   18. Juan V Posted: March 10, 2009 at 06:48 PM (#3098274)
Now that I think about it... perhaps something based on Pythagoras would work as a tiebreaker?

Hey, that PR-Netherlands game was still well worth the price of whatever you paid for tickets.

Can't complain, really. It was a great game, especially during the last two innings! Let me tell you, though, the mood in the crowd from innings 4 to 8 was very, very subdued when PR just kept blowing opportunities to score.

maybe the mlb needs to consider putting franshises in latin america as the next play to go to, im sure it would always be well attended

There are several problems:
Economics: These countries are poor compared to the US of A (esp. the DR). Even the Blue Jays have trouble keeping up money-wise, and they are in Canada, which is far closer to the United States in economy than, say, Mexico. Puerto Rico wouldn't be as much a problem since it uses the US dollar though.

Politics: Do you honestly think that a MLB team in, say, Venezuela, could happen with the current government there? Me neither.

Foreign Culture differences: There is a vast difference between an American living in Canada and an American living in Mexico or the Dominican Republic. Never mind the language differences and different standards of living (see: Montezuma's Revenge), just think about the cultural differences. Go read about the experiences of Gaijin in Japan for examples.

Would crowds go for primarily-American teams: Even in the highly-diverse MLB of today, most teams are primarily American. Would a team in Mexico or Puerto Rico get as much support as the All-Puerto Rican or All-Mexican WBC Teams get? I don't know, I'm guessing it'd depend on the quality of the team. But I seem to remember the Expo Crowds in San Juan decreasing in attendance as the Novelty wore off.

My dislike of the Italian team has nothing to do with ringers, and everything to do with revenge for yesterday, as well as memories of the streets of Toronto after the last World Cup. I am a small, petty man.
   24. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 09:01 PM (#3098509)
Italy/Venezuela about to start in what is sure to be a crowd of tens.

Great going Canada. You ruined the Skydome's attendance!
   25. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 09:17 PM (#3098526)
The Venezuelan team would like to thank the Tigers and Orioles for making 5/9ths of their lineup possible.
   26. meatwad Posted: March 10, 2009 at 09:21 PM (#3098531)
bringing the infield in actually helped
   27. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 09:21 PM (#3098532)
Great play by Alex Liddi, a Mariners Farmhand who is actually Italian.
   28. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 10, 2009 at 09:27 PM (#3098540)
Big strand there by Venezuela, with a Runner on third and one out for Abreu, Cabrera, and Ordonez and nothing to show for it.
   29. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 10, 2009 at 09:29 PM (#3098542)
There is every chance that Ven loses today. Their pitching is a joke and Italy has at least half of a major league lineup.
   30. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 09:30 PM (#3098543)
Something I just realized that I really should have thought of earlier: Having European teams do well in the WBC is probably the only way the Tourney will actually help get Baseball back into the Olympics.
   31. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 10, 2009 at 09:34 PM (#3098547)
Who gives a #### about baseball in the olympics.

What's up with that strike zone?
   33. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 10, 2009 at 09:39 PM (#3098552)
Luis Sojo's life just flashed in front of his eyes.

If he loses this game he'd best not set foot in Caracas again.
   34. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 09:39 PM (#3098553)
Who gives a #### about baseball in the olympics.

It's not the tournament that is important so much as the status. Many countries will only fund baseball programs (including building and maintaining fields) if it is a Olympic Sport. This is actually true for all sports, but since Baseball is rather expensive, funding is more needed than, say, Squash.
   35. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 09:40 PM (#3098555)
Also: Venezuela is incredibly lucky.
   36. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 10, 2009 at 09:46 PM (#3098563)
So far the Latin American all-star offenses have failed to impress mightily.
   37. Vegas Watch Posted: March 10, 2009 at 09:51 PM (#3098577)
Ottavino looks great. A truly shocking development.
   38. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 09:54 PM (#3098580)
He can't go forever, Vegas Watch.

Oh, and Mets Fans: K-Rod has said he wants to go 2 innings if Venezuela has the lead going into the 8th.
   39. Vegas Watch Posted: March 10, 2009 at 10:04 PM (#3098595)
He can't go forever, Vegas Watch.

Nope, that's it. 3IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 3K. Can't say I expected that.
   40. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 10:11 PM (#3098608)
Wonder if Gonzalez is gone. Because the Venezuelan Bullpen is so horrible outside of K-Rod that a group of good High Schoolers could probably put a few runs on the board against them.
   41. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 10:16 PM (#3098615)
Italy probably lucky that didn't score two runs. Damn he spanked that.
   42. Bitter Calculus Instructor Posted: March 10, 2009 at 10:47 PM (#3098637)
Well, this game is pretty much over. Italy's upset bid is done. It's up to the Netherlands and Australia to attempt to get a new elite-8 this year.
   43. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 10:48 PM (#3098638)
The DR has David Ortiz at first and Miguel Tejada at third. In no way could this possibly backfire.

Woah!! I just realized I get MLB Network.

Fun with Babelfish- Take Me Out to the Ballgame (the chorus) in Dutch:

Neem me aan het balspel,
Neem me met de menigte;
Koop me één of andere pinda's en Cracker Jack,
Ik geef niet als ik nooit terugkeer.
Laat me wortel schieten, wortel, wortel voor het huisteam,
Als zij don' t wint, it' S.A. schande.
Voor it' s één, twee, drie stakingen, u is uit,
bij het oude balspel.

Translated back:
Take me to the ball game,
Take me with the mob;
Buy me one or other pinda' s and, I do not give to cracker jacket if I return never. Let me carrot shoot, carrot, carrot for the house team,
if they don' t wins, it'S a disgrace.
For it' s one, two, three strikes, you are from, at the old ball game.

Awesome.

By the way: Who else thinks that having games in Miami is just asking for a rain delay?
   47. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 11:16 PM (#3098660)
Stuifbergen has done very well.
   48. Lassus Posted: March 10, 2009 at 11:29 PM (#3098674)
I don't suppose anyone has an MLB.tv account I could pirate/use. I'm freaking dog-sitting for someone who has less-than-basic less-than-human cable.
   49. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 11:35 PM (#3098680)
Sorry, Lassus. Can't help you. I seem to remember a place being mentioned on a previous post about the WBC, but I can't remember. ESPN Deportes has it if you want to see the game, but I doubt they'd have that either if they just have basic cable.
   50. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 11:37 PM (#3098681)
The Dutchmen once again have one of those crazy-ass lucky groundballs to sneak out of the inning. DR leaves the bases loaded.
   51. Lassus Posted: March 10, 2009 at 11:39 PM (#3098682)
Hey now, GB, way to discount the Dutch!

(I'm following on Gameday)
   52. Lassus Posted: March 10, 2009 at 11:42 PM (#3098684)
Yeah, I have the acquisition of an account in the works through, um, various channels, but it's not gone through yet, nor probably will by the time tonight's games are over. AH well.
   53. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 11:44 PM (#3098685)
Randall Simon doing his darndest to get Ubaldo to the pitch limit and force Pedro into the game. He then strikes out as soon as I type that. Ubaldo Jimenez sets new WBC record for K's (9).
   54. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 11:46 PM (#3098688)
10 K's.

10 K's in four innings. Impressive.

[50] The Netherlands is lucky that Dominican players hit routine groundballs?
   57. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 11:52 PM (#3098695)
Well, okay, that is the DR's fault, but it seems to me that the Dutch have an unusual amount of those happen to the teams that are playing them. They are escape artists.
   58. Lassus Posted: March 10, 2009 at 11:52 PM (#3098697)
Geez, please tell me that Jose Reyes is not going to suck this bad for the Mets all year. Or even all month.
   59. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 11:58 PM (#3098699)
Hanley Ramirez hits it all the way to the warning track in what looked to me like it would certainly be a homer. That wind saved the Dutch there.
   60. Tripon Posted: March 10, 2009 at 11:58 PM (#3098700)
God doesn't want the DR to win. He needs another good laugh.
   61. Gamingboy Posted: March 10, 2009 at 11:59 PM (#3098701)
Top of the 5th is done. Still no score. Wonder if Jimenez will go out again or if it is Pedro (or somebody else's) time.

   73. Gamingboy Posted: March 11, 2009 at 12:23 AM (#3098727)
Still scoreless. If the Netherlands lose here, they will probably be the best team to not make it to the second round (Canada is disqualified for going 2 and out in their own country).
   74. Lassus Posted: March 11, 2009 at 12:23 AM (#3098728)

How can Holland possibly score? How many balls have they hit out of the infield over three games?

Hope for an error, I guess.

It's pretty awesome they've still got a realistic chance of making it at this point.

Through 23 innings, NED pitchers have given up exactly 5 runs, for an ERA of 1.96. That's against the DOM and PUR, teams with lineups that would probably make them serious MLB pennant contenders.

Wow.

Yowza. Nasty.

COME HOME, PEDRO!
   87. Gamingboy Posted: March 11, 2009 at 12:32 AM (#3098746)
Okay, this inning is when the DR will finally get on the board and show these foolish Dutchmen why the DR is full of ALL-STARS (C).

I love Pedro. Though it's impossible to tell whether him looking good today means anything since this Holland offense...isn't much.

I hope this game stays 0-0 for like 20 innings. Wouldn't that be awesome?

Through 23 innings, NED pitchers have given up exactly 5 runs, for an ERA of 1.96.

And yet Bly is STILL not in the Hall of Fame. Netherlands wins the title, does it punch his ticket?

It'd be more awesome because that would mean 7 innings of no runs scoring despite having men on 2nd and 1st and no outs to start each inning.

See, the ALL-STARS (C) wouldn't have walked Taveras!

Gamingboy, are you making an RBI Baseball reference?
   95. Gamingboy Posted: March 11, 2009 at 12:40 AM (#3098758)
Not intentionally, but now that I think about it....

I was sure that was gone. Wow.

Ramirez and his great power, the type of power only on teams of ALL-STARS (C).

Come on, are you kidding? Is there some kind of Dutch wind blowing in on all of these long flyballs?
