WBC News and Scores 2-5-09: Japan wins

Those of you who got up this morning got a treat. Japan won, but it was far closer than anyone thought: 4-0. It was in many ways a game and the Chinese actually equaled the Japanese in hits.

Yu Darvish had 4 no-hit innings, K’ing 3. Ichiro, Johjima, Fukudome and Iwamura were all hitless.

Scores from North American exhibition games later yesterday:
Angels beat the South Africans 13-6.

The Reds edged the Dutch in 10. Final score: 4-3.

Mexico beat Arizona 19-4.

PR edged Tampa 2-1

Australia beat Seattle 11-9

Next WBC game is tomorrow at 4:30 AM, Korea vs. Taipei.

Cool to see that South Africa had the lead, lost it, tied it up before the Angels poured it on. That'll be a great memory for a lot of their players.

Shouldn't the date in the headline be "3-5-09" instead of "2-5-09"?

Hell of a comeback by the Aussies.

Oy oy oy.

Which of these "no chance in hell" countries is most likely to be a real player in the next (or next one after that) WBC?

South Africa, Netherlands, Italy, Australia?

I don't include China because I figure with eighteen trillion people it's only a matter of time before enough are good at baseballing.

I'm inclined to say Australia, if only because they seem so much closer than all the rest.

Well, of course China will be a power in time, as you said. The Netherlands has a nice professional league that attracts some foregin talent, but the rest of Europe isn't helping just yet. I guess I have to agree with RB in NYC.

The fans in Japan are beyond excellent, that atmosphere was better than any World Series in recent memory.

Italy could always fluke their way to success, given their very loose use of ancestry rules.
