(link: Pedro Feliciano joins Puerto Rico)
Pedro Feliciano has joined Team Puerto Rico. Other major Mets in WBC news: Feliciano, a left-handed reliever who produced a spotless ERA in the inaugural Classic, will join already-confirmed Mets teammates Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado on the Puerto Rican roster. His confirmation brings the total number of Mets in the Classic to four—David Wright also announced that he will play for Team USA.
In addition, Venezuelan pitchers Johan Santana and Francisco Rodriguez have said that they would like to play for their national team, and Dominican shortstop Jose Reyes has said that he would like to do the same.
But closer to home, America’s starting rotation continues to empty. Cliff Lee is the latest to announce he is not going to participate. As it stands right now, the two starters who come to mind as definitely being in the WBC for the USA are Roy Oswalt and John Lackey. Jeremy Guthrie of the Orioles has actually said he’d like to be considered, but let’s face it: If he’s in as anything more than a “if somebody gets hurt” alternate or something, it’ll mean that about 35 more American starting pitchers have said no, including Mike Mussina and Greg Maddux (I still say Davey Johnson should at least try).

A, he'd be in the middle of his own college season.
B, Why would we want him to make the roster? Hes a college player. We're talking about guys like Maddux, Mussina, Oswalt, ect.
And have been giggling like a school-girl ever since
It'll be a way to introduce Stransburg to America, give people who don't follow college baseball and the draft to see how good Stransburg really is. And him being in the middle of his college season would be a plus, no need for him to worry about injuries, as he's already all warmed up and ready to pitch. And like I said before, it'll be interesting, short of a way show the bridge the gap from one pitching generation to the next.
Edit: Also, Stransburg should only be used if there isn't enough quality pitchers on the U.S. team. Its just a thought.
WTF?
What about, you know, his college season and his teammates?

The guy is still a 21 year old college pitcher. Under no circumstances should the US be that desperate, no matter how tremendous Strasburg's stuff.
There are dozens of MLB pitchers more ready than him right now and plenty of minor league pitchers too.
And perhaps even learn to spell his name. Keine "n", liebchen.
Given the way Pedro II pitched for the Mets this year, I'd say the headline ought to be:
Feliciano is in for Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico starting rotation is doomed (for sure)
Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. I'll be here all week. Make sure to tip your waitresses.
What about, you know, Strasburg's bank account and the money he would be able to command with the team that drafts him with an successful WBC appearance? I'm being flippant here, but its not that outrageous that Strasburg and MLB at least consider the thought.

Who all have the standard excuse that they're not going to pitch in the WBC due to the injury risk that might happen. I don't see it as a desperation tactic, I see it as a bold move to show that baseball outside of MLB can be good too. Obviously, its not going to happen, but the guy was good enough for the Olympics. He's suddenly got good enough for the WBC?
Feliciano won't be starting for our PR team but, yeah, I was thinking along the same lines. We are glad Schoeneweis has no Puerto Rican parentage.

You really want a kid to quit on his teammates halfway through the year. Who are you?
I'm sorry, thats just wrong.
I don't get this line of thinking at all, and I don't know if it is just me but it seems that you're more likely to get these kind of thoughts from SABR-leaning fans. Obviously I'm not condemning statheads with that observation, hey I am one, but it troubles me that it seems to be the case and I can't figure out why exactly a SABR-leaning fan would have less regard for common sense, doing the right thing kind of stuff.

Do you realize the difference here AT ALL?
The Olympics were a minor-league competition. The WBC is an MLB one, one that will feature all-star caliber hitters.
It isn't some huge stretch for a 20 yo with a 96 MPH heater to be a better pitcher than random AAA arms.
But even the most mediocre MLB pitchers are going to be better, right now, than a kid who has never faced a pro hitter.
Most of the hitters Strasburg faced were the same or similar ages to him. The Canadian team, for instance, started 18yo Brett Lawrie and 20yo Nick Weglarz.
He's Canadian, hasn't really pitched since University. He could probably get a spot on the training staff, or having his daughter scout in the Territories.
I think it just means that they haven't "officially" been told they are in. They all but are guaranteed to be in.
