I'm pretty sad that the qualifiers will be done after this.

+1

I'd say Panama has the advantage tonight, as their hitting has come to life, but one notable thing is that Brazil has 11 pitchers available (only their two starters have been burned) while Panama will only have 8, so Barry Larkin will be able to mix-and-match more while Roberto Kelly might have to risk leaving some guys in too long.
   4. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: November 19, 2012 at 05:20 PM (#4306214)
Sad about the qualifiers being over, but not about the vuvuzelas being retired for a while.
   5. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: November 19, 2012 at 05:21 PM (#4306216)
BTW, Gamingboy, I forget your connection to international ball. Do you live outside the US, or was it something else?
   6. Der_K Posted: November 19, 2012 at 05:38 PM (#4306236)
Not to speak for Gamingboy, but I always thought it was because baseball is teh awesome.

Der K basically has it. It's a cross between the fact that the more baseball the better and just the fact I find how baseball is in other countries neat.
   8. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: November 19, 2012 at 07:33 PM (#4306305)
OK, so we're in the same boat then. I think the current state of international baseball is a lot like it must have been in the US decades ago, with a variety of leagues all over the place, widely varying in style and quality.
   9. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 08:08 PM (#4306321)
That's part of the appeal it has to me. The varied styles and quality means that it's a lot easier to have good David-and-Goliath stories like the Honkballers or this year's Brazilians.
   10. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 09:03 PM (#4306343)
I predict that either this'll be a Panamanian blowout or a close Brazil win.
   11. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 09:16 PM (#4306350)
Wow, what a catch to stop Lee from getting a hit.
   12. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 09:16 PM (#4306351)
So far, so good!
   13. Bitter Calculus Instructor Posted: November 19, 2012 at 09:25 PM (#4306356)
On one hand, I'd like to see the best teams in the tournament. On the other hand, Panama didn't win a game in '06 or '09 so it'd be nice to see somebody new get a shot. And also, it'll feel kind of weird if Panama wins in that they'll have gone 1-1 head to head, but Panama wins.

Also, when will the bracket assignments for the qualifying teams get announced?
   14. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 09:30 PM (#4306359)

Do you mean the teams that have already qualified or the teams that came in during the qualifiers?
   15. Bitter Calculus Instructor Posted: November 19, 2012 at 09:33 PM (#4306360)
I mean when will Canada, Spain, Taiwan and today's winner get placed? I know the other 12 teams have already been placed for the first round.http://web.worldbaseballclassic.com/wbc/2013/pools_and_venues/
   16. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 09:36 PM (#4306364)
I figure during the winter meetings. That's apparently when they will be revealing the provisional rosters (I.E. the players from which the final rosters will be picked from)
   17. Tschingsch Posted: November 19, 2012 at 09:38 PM (#4306367)
Anyone else lose the MLB Network feed? Luckily the stream is still working...
   18. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 09:39 PM (#4306368)
BTW, it seems Japan has the worst possible timing: Ichiro and Hiroki Kuroda have said that they won't take part. Not surprisingly, they also are free agents (although apparently Ichiro is partially because he likes the fact that if he doesn't play in the WBC again it'll guarantee that he had gone out on top in it).
   19. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 09:41 PM (#4306370)

Anyone else lose the MLB Network feed? Luckily the stream is still working...

I still got the MLB Network feed..
   20. Tschingsch Posted: November 19, 2012 at 09:42 PM (#4306371)
It came back on once I mentioned it, which always seems to happen, which is precisely why I brought it up.
   21. Good cripple hitter Posted: November 19, 2012 at 09:51 PM (#4306377)
Brazil just got bailed out on that Conradian play.
   22. Bitter Calculus Instructor Posted: November 19, 2012 at 09:52 PM (#4306379)
Awful play by the 2B, but even worse baserunning.
   23. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 09:52 PM (#4306380)
Good Luck? Bad luck?
   24. Tschingsch Posted: November 19, 2012 at 09:52 PM (#4306381)
Wow, that was bad.
   25. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 09:53 PM (#4306382)
That was... unusual.
   26. OsunaSakata Posted: November 19, 2012 at 09:58 PM (#4306385)
Must have learned his baserunning from teammate Ruben Rivera.
   27. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 10:00 PM (#4306386)
First blood!
   28. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 10:01 PM (#4306388)
The balls are falling JUST over the Panamanians heads. It's like they have mastered the art of physics.
   29. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 10:01 PM (#4306390)
Benny Hill...

Wow.
   31. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 10:18 PM (#4306401)
I look forward to the Barry Larkin manager rumors whenever Dusty Baker leaves Cincy.
   32. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 10:28 PM (#4306409)
Question: Is Brazil technically part of Latin America? Because, I mean, they speak Portuguese, not Spanish...
   33. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 10:30 PM (#4306411)
Well, it is still a Romance Language...
   34. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 10:35 PM (#4306413)
Rueben ain't nothing but a sandwich...
   35. OsunaSakata Posted: November 19, 2012 at 10:35 PM (#4306414)
Brazil has always been part of Latin American. You could stretch the definition to include the French speaking islands like Haiti. Really fuzzy thinkers include everything that's not Canada and the 50 United States, so that definition would include Belize, Jamaica and Suriname.

Mota just referred to Steve Garvey as a father figure. ORLY?
   36. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 10:41 PM (#4306418)
Mendoooooza!
   37. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 10:55 PM (#4306433)
Another run for Brazil would be huge.
   38. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 10:56 PM (#4306436)
You seem to be calling 'em GB
   39. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 10:57 PM (#4306437)
lousy bunt
   40. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 10:58 PM (#4306439)
Imagine if they hadn't gotten him at second...
   41. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: November 19, 2012 at 10:58 PM (#4306440)
How do you say "rally" in Portuguese?
   42. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:00 PM (#4306443)
'Spos jinxed it!
   43. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:00 PM (#4306444)
I guess it's spelled GDP.
   44. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:00 PM (#4306445)
Not Januario, that two faced so & so...
   45. Tschingsch Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:01 PM (#4306446)
How do you say "rally" in Portuguese?

Not sure, but it's not "Januario".
   46. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:02 PM (#4306447)
Lee, Rivera and Macias due up. The boomsticks.
   47. Tschingsch Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:02 PM (#4306448)
Coke to 'Spos
   48. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:03 PM (#4306450)
Nice range, Orlando!
   49. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:07 PM (#4306453)
I'd like to say six outs to go, but I'm afraid of being a jinx.
   50. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:07 PM (#4306454)
Mmmmphhhh...
   51. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:08 PM (#4306456)
Brazil still needs more runs. Eventually some Panamanian will pop one.
   52. Tschingsch Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:10 PM (#4306457)
Glancing at the TV, "Top 5 Hitters" looked like it said something else for a second...
   53. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:13 PM (#4306462)
Ramiro Mendoza, Panamanian Hero.
   54. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:13 PM (#4306463)
Best Panamanian closer ever? Heh.
   55. Devin has a deep burning passion for fuzzy socks Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:14 PM (#4306464)
"He can play shortstop." Well, as a Mets fan, I hope so!
   56. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:15 PM (#4306466)
Best Panamanian closer ever? Heh.

You are forgetting that many people don't think of Mariano Rivera as a closer, but rather a force of nature.
   57. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:17 PM (#4306469)
Too true GB.

So on the Tejada tip: Should Mets fans be hoping he doesn't play in the WBC? Fatigue etc...
   58. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:18 PM (#4306470)
Great dig!
   59. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:19 PM (#4306471)
Gomes and friends due up...
   60. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:20 PM (#4306472)
Oh, and I don't think anybody really worries about the position players playing in the WBC. It's more the pitchers that fans prefer be replaced by audioanimatronic approximations.
   61. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:21 PM (#4306473)
Since I didn't screw things up earlier: 3 outs to go.
   62. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:21 PM (#4306474)
As much as I'm hoping for Brasil, I can't help but think about how pissed off I would've been if Canada had been knocked out. These qualifiers are harsh.
   63. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:23 PM (#4306475)
I remember Vernon Wells had his best (ie non-crap) April after getting a couple of at bats in the WBC...
   64. Devin has a deep burning passion for fuzzy socks Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:24 PM (#4306476)
Personally, I don't worry about the WBC for position players. Pitchers I get a bit more iffy about. If it wasn't for the big underdog angle, I'd be rooting for Panama.
   65. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:26 PM (#4306478)
Mendoza wins the non-robot division.
   66. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:27 PM (#4306479)
Manny Acosta.
   67. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:29 PM (#4306480)
Here we go. At least two MLB players stand in Brazil's way.
   68. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:29 PM (#4306481)
So none of the qualifiers got into the crazy 13th inning rule ri-mmmmphhhh!
   69. OsunaSakata Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:30 PM (#4306482)
How do you say "Drew Storen" in Portuguese?
   70. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:31 PM (#4306484)
Barry Larkin doesn't know the meaning of the word "Storen".
   71. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:32 PM (#4306486)
I guess the words \"#######\" are the same no matter the language...
   72. Good cripple hitter Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:32 PM (#4306487)
BTW, it seems Japan has the worst possible timing: Ichiro and Hiroki Kuroda have said that they won't take part.

That's awful news. Fired up nationalistic Ichiro is one of my favourite Ichiros.
   73. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:33 PM (#4306488)
lively crowd
   74. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:33 PM (#4306490)
Uh oh.
   75. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:35 PM (#4306491)
Man in scoring position with Chooch and Caballo coming up...
   76. Good cripple hitter Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:36 PM (#4306492)
I hate when teams bunt against pitchers with command problems.
   77. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:37 PM (#4306493)
Loving the crowd shots/lack of ads.
   78. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:38 PM (#4306495)
Rally congas
   79. Good cripple hitter Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:39 PM (#4306496)
Outside of the air horns, this crowd is awesome.
   80. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:39 PM (#4306497)
This is surprisingly captivating.
   81. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:39 PM (#4306498)
Brazil may go down, but damn, they are going to go down against the people you'd expect them to.
   82. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:40 PM (#4306499)
there's a panama side of the field?
   83. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:42 PM (#4306501)
Surprisingly TFB? This is the only game 'til March...
   84. Good cripple hitter Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:44 PM (#4306503)
I'm really glad that this is on TV. I was getting so desperate for baseball, I was actually considering watching random games on MLB.tv.
   85. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:44 PM (#4306504)
Oh, Caballo!
   86. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:44 PM (#4306505)
Big K
   87. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:44 PM (#4306506)
Well, it's not an abstract appreciation of the game, it's actual intensity. I'm more worked up than Barry Larkin.
   88. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:46 PM (#4306510)
I hear you, I miss baseball...
   89. Good cripple hitter Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:47 PM (#4306511)
That was a surprisingly awesome game.
   90. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:47 PM (#4306513)
BRAZIL!

wow!
   93. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:47 PM (#4306516)
Excuse me, BRASIL!
   94. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:48 PM (#4306517)
...more fun than the world series this year...
   95. 'Spos: "convenient, cheap, and smoked meat" Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:49 PM (#4306518)
Night all.
   96. Gamingboy Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:49 PM (#4306519)
Damn, is this a great game or what?
   97. Tschingsch Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:50 PM (#4306520)
Great game. Thanks GB for doing these, I know there aren't many of us that are into the WBC.

Now to decide if and when to take vacation in March.
   98. Devin has a deep burning passion for fuzzy socks Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:51 PM (#4306521)
Whooo! Way to go, Brasil!
   99. Der_K Posted: November 19, 2012 at 11:54 PM (#4306523)
compelling!

Is MLB Network showing any ABL games this year?
