WBC Qualifiers Day One Chatter: Israel vs. South Africa (Also: Barry Larkin named manager of Brazil)

Tonight at 7 Eastern: Israel vs. South Africa in game 1 of the Jupiter pool. Is available free on www.worldbaseballclassic.com, making it the perfect thing to have on as a second screen as we all get our nightly dose of pennant races.

In other news, Barry Larkin has been named manager of Team Brazil. Let the speculation that he may one day take over for Dusty Baker begin!

I read this as "the Jupiter II". Are the qualifiers getting lost in space?

It's funnier in the headline -- Barry Larkin named manager of Brazil -- than the excerpt -- Barry Larkin has been named manager of Team Brazil. That word "team" really changes the tone.

More surprising than Barry Larkin managing Brazil, I found out today (from MLBTR) that Gary Sheffield is an agent. Just when MLB executives thought they wouldn't have to worry about him anymore. Funny.

Sportsnet in Canada is showing Canada vs. Great Britain live tomorrow at 1.

I might watch Israel play tonight just to see Shawn Green play again.

Shawn Green struck out in his first at-bat. So I guess his comeback isn't happening yet. Israel leads 1-0 in top of the second thanks to a 1st inning bomb by Nate Freiman of the Padres' organization.

Israel breaks it open. They look good in terms of position player talent, but need pitching. If they qualify and can persuade Kinsler and Braun to play for them, I'd imagine they'd be competitive, in a one and done sense, with the big teams.

Are Feldman and Marquis going to start for the team if they qualify? Because their rotation looks barren right now.

Israel wins 7-3. SA made it semi-interesting near the end when Israel's pitching and fielding left them (for example, Israel put one of the few Israelis in on mop-up duty and he promptly started walking people).

Day one done.
