WBC Qualifiers Day One Chatter: Israel vs. South Africa (Also: Barry Larkin named manager of Brazil)

Tonight at 7 Eastern: Israel vs. South Africa in game 1 of the Jupiter pool. Is available free on www.worldbaseballclassic.com, making it the perfect thing to have on as a second screen as we all get our nightly dose of pennant races.

In other news, Barry Larkin has been named manager of Team Brazil. Let the speculation that he may one day take over for Dusty Baker begin!

game 1 of the Jupiter pool.

I read this as "the Jupiter II". Are the qualifiers getting lost in space?

"Oh, William! The pain...!"

It's funnier in the headline -- Barry Larkin named manager of Brazil -- than the excerpt -- Barry Larkin has been named manager of Team Brazil. That word "team" really changes the tone.

More surprising than Barry Larkin managing Brazil, I found out today (from MLBTR) that Gary Sheffield is an agent. Just when MLB executives thought they wouldn't have to worry about him anymore. Funny.

Sportsnet in Canada is showing Canada vs. Great Britain live tomorrow at 1.

I might watch Israel play tonight just to see Shawn Green play again.

Starting pitchers tonight:

Israel- Eric Berger
South Africa- Dylan Unsworth

I was hoping Barry Larkin was named manager of Brazil the actual country.

Or you could read it that Barry Larkin has to deal with the moods of Ronaldinho.

The stream is here for those interested, apparently.

I wish to hear more about Barry Larkin's Brazilian job.

Shawn Green struck out in his first at-bat. So I guess his comeback isn't happening yet. Israel leads 1-0 in top of the second thanks to a 1st inning bomb by Nate Freiman of the Padres' organization.

2-0 Israel after 7. South Africa playing Israel tough, but hasn't been able to get the bats going when they need it.

Israel breaks it open. They look good in terms of position player talent, but need pitching. If they qualify and can persuade Kinsler and Braun to play for them, I'd imagine they'd be competitive, in a one and done sense, with the big teams.

Glad that Adam Greenberg appeared.... but bummed he was then walked, so he hasn't had an AB in the WBC either. Yet.

Are Feldman and Marquis going to start for the team if they qualify? Because their rotation looks barren right now.

Israel wins 7-3. SA made it semi-interesting near the end when Israel's pitching and fielding left them (for example, Israel put one of the few Israelis in on mop-up duty and he promptly started walking people).

Day one done.

There are some Brazilians of Japanese descent playing professionally in Japan.
