It'll be Mario Santiago vs. Kenta Maeda.
   2. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 07:48 PM (#4390123)
I see no way Puerto Rico wins this game, BTW.
   3. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 09:04 PM (#4390159)
Kenta Maeda threw 140 pitches in his final start last season... with his team 26 games out.
   4. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 17, 2013 at 09:13 PM (#4390161)
Wow. So they show Orlando Cepeda handing the ball to two Japanese gentlemen and give him an on-screen graphic, while Sadaharu Oh is mentioned in passing and barely shown. Good work.
   5. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 09:17 PM (#4390162)
Is it just me, or is the center-field to home cam sort of different than it was during the WS last season?
   6. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 09:19 PM (#4390163)
Woah, what's up with Kenta? Two straight walks?
   7. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 09:27 PM (#4390165)
This... is an unexpected score.
   8. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: March 17, 2013 at 09:40 PM (#4390169)
Hmm does the loser of the play the loser feom tomorrow?
   9. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 09:42 PM (#4390170)
No, there is no consolation game.
   10. Honkie Kong Posted: March 17, 2013 at 09:47 PM (#4390172)
PR is going to miss a few opportunities to build up a big lead, they will take a small lead to the final innings, and the then Japanese Zombies will strike..again!
   11. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 09:52 PM (#4390173)
Maeda isn't going to stay in too long if it keeps going like this.
   12. RollingWave Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:04 PM (#4390177)
Not blowing the Japanese out when you have a chance is a recipe for disastor
   13. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:09 PM (#4390178)
I'm impressed as hell ny the size of the crowd.
   14. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:10 PM (#4390180)
Puerto Rico Honkbal final?
   15. Tschingsch Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:11 PM (#4390181)
One can only hope...
   16. RollingWave Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:12 PM (#4390182)
I don't want a Japanese 3 peat that's for sure.
   17. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:13 PM (#4390183)
Are there a lot of Puerto Ricans and Dominicans in California
I associate them more with East Coast cities

What would PR vs DR finals in Yankee Stadium look like?
   18. RollingWave Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:13 PM (#4390186)
With all the nimbling, is Kenta Maeda Japanese for Daisuke Matsuzaka? oh wait.

   19. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:14 PM (#4390187)
What do you think...35,000 in the house? I was really worried without USA or Korea attendance would be in trouble.
   20. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:15 PM (#4390188)
Let's see how the second time through the order goes...
   21. RollingWave Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:16 PM (#4390190)

Que Westside story jokes
   22. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:17 PM (#4390191)

What do you think...35,000 in the house? I was really worried without USA or Korea attendance would be in trouble.

I read somewhere that it was estimated it would be between 30-38K. Hardly a packed house, but not the gigantic empty chasm some of the haters were predicting.
   23. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:17 PM (#4390192)
whats the pitch count this round, 95?
   24. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:18 PM (#4390193)
Yeah, 95.
   25. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:22 PM (#4390195)
Clearly, Yamamoto needs to call up Ichiro and have him give Samurai Japan a between innings "pep talk"...
   26. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:22 PM (#4390196)
hell of a throw, the jpn player couldnt believe it walking back to the dugout
   27. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:23 PM (#4390197)
It looks pretty full on TV. DR vs. Ned will be a smaller crowd, but a DR vs. Japan final should draw well.
   28. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:27 PM (#4390198)

You assume it's going to be DR vs. Japan...
   29. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:27 PM (#4390200)
Not that I'm writing off PR. But DR vs. Japan would essentially by an MLB vs. NPB all star game.
   30. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:32 PM (#4390202)
Wow. Dead Meat.
   31. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:32 PM (#4390203)
no chance on that one...
   32. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:34 PM (#4390204)
Yeah, Abe had a cannon there.
   33. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:35 PM (#4390205)
Japan's really lucky. Maeda's been somewhat shaky and PR's smallball has already cost them an inning's worth of outs.
   34. Honkie Kong Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:36 PM (#4390206)
Japan's really lucky. Maeda's been somewhat shaky and PR's smallball has already cost them an inning's worth of outs.

This always happens for JP in the WBC. And then they make them pay.
   35. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:39 PM (#4390208)
I'm watching with the sound off. Who has more fans?
   36. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:40 PM (#4390209)
That's an awful break for Puerto Rico.
   37. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:42 PM (#4390210)
I'm watching with the sound off. Who has more fans?

Japan's are definitive louder.
   38. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:50 PM (#4390215)
The Japanese hitters seem.. over eager. They're pressing, wound a bit tight. Rare for them.
   39. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:51 PM (#4390217)
I think Japan is in trouble.
   40. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:52 PM (#4390218)
huge strike outs to end that inning, they need to extend this lead this inning with Beltran due up 3rd
   41. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 17, 2013 at 10:54 PM (#4390221)
I'd say less 'over eager' and more 'trying to win at RBI baseball by hammering on the 'b' button every pitch.' Just an ugly approach to hitting.
   42. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:07 PM (#4390226)
Brutal play by pagan.
   43. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:07 PM (#4390227)
That was as bad as a Raul Ibanez GIF.
   44. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:08 PM (#4390228)
Pagan did not look good there. Luck for him it's 2 outs so less of a chance this will bite PR in the ass... maybe.
   45. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:08 PM (#4390229)
bad play with the glove there...
   46. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:09 PM (#4390230)
Pay $10 for glorified bagel bites.
   47. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:09 PM (#4390231)
If Japan ties it I don't see the PR winning. just dont seem to have the offense against a rested Japan
   48. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:12 PM (#4390232)
If their approach doesn't change, it'll be really hard for Japan to score a run in this game. There's almost no discipline shown by any of their hitters.
   49. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:12 PM (#4390233)
This could be the greatest sporting triumph for the Emerald Isle since Los Boricuas won the tag team belts.
   50. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:17 PM (#4390236)
This game might be over.
   51. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:18 PM (#4390237)
Time for Seppuku on the mound.
   52. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:18 PM (#4390238)
wow, that may break japan
   53. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:19 PM (#4390240)
How can you not love this as a way to start up the season? drama great play, intensity and dammit it's baseball
   54. Dale Sams Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:20 PM (#4390241)
Take that small ball!
   55. RollingWave Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:20 PM (#4390242)
PUERTO RICO!!!!!!!
   56. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:21 PM (#4390243)
Meatwad: some people just can't enjoy anything.
   57. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:21 PM (#4390244)
Alex Rios never has to buy a drink in Puerto Rico ever again.
   58. RollingWave Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:37 PM (#4390247)
we've seen this script before though, Japan down by 2-3 run ... let's see if they can do it again
   59. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:37 PM (#4390248)
Japan can't buy a hit
   60. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:38 PM (#4390249)
I do worry about the attendance in the Finals if Japan doesn't make it: I mean, I have to think a large bunch of the tickets bought were bought by Japanese fans...
   61. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:39 PM (#4390250)
Wouldn't it be more worthwhile to show a guys 2012 stats than his WBC stats?
   62. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:39 PM (#4390251)
I'm sure PR fans will scoop them up.
   63. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:42 PM (#4390252)
Okay, so, if Japan loses here, it'll be interesting to see if, in Japan, there's an effect like what happened in the 2004 Olympics. Something tells me there will be more MLB Japanese players going in 2017...
   64. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:44 PM (#4390253)
not a bad thing, if harper and trout go out too it could be the best wbc yet
   65. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:45 PM (#4390254)
not a bad thing, if harper and trout go out too it could be the best wbc yet

Harper has said he wants in already, and I think I saw Trout say he would have done it this year if not for the fact that this is going to be his first full MLB season (I think Harper might have had the same reason).
   66. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:46 PM (#4390255)
and its a legit reason to miss it. I think more stars will be out for the us, and if PR or the Dutch win it, all the power teams will be stacked next time through.
   67. RollingWave Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:48 PM (#4390256)
Given that California is now 50% Latino, a DR / PR finals may draw more than a US / Japan one anyway ;)
   68. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:51 PM (#4390258)
Given that California is now 50% Latino

But a lot of that Latino is from Mexico. I don't know how many Puerto Ricans or Dominicans are there.
   69. Gamingboy Posted: March 17, 2013 at 11:56 PM (#4390259)
PR could put this game to bed now with a XBH.
   70. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:00 AM (#4390260)
Right now Gameday shows that "undefined pitcher" has entered the game. Can't be worse for Japan than what's been going on.
   71. Gamingboy Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:09 AM (#4390264)
Ichiro, somewhere, is swearing at the screen.
   72. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:12 AM (#4390266)
A hit! A palpable hit!
   73. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:12 AM (#4390267)
Was that a legit triple, by the way?
   74. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:13 AM (#4390268)
Business just picked up.

No, it wasn't really a legit triple. The runner was cruising into second when he noticed how bad Pagan's off-balance throw was.
   75. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:13 AM (#4390269)
Here we go....
   76. Gamingboy Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:14 AM (#4390270)
This is eerily like the PR-USA game...
   77. Honkie Kong Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:14 AM (#4390271)
Can JC Romero rescue the Puerto Ricans a second time?
   78. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:16 AM (#4390274)
This is getting very good.
   79. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:16 AM (#4390275)
Nice to have your MVP up in this situation.
   80. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:16 AM (#4390276)
Can Abe reach the cove?
   81. Gamingboy Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:17 AM (#4390277)
Romero vs. Abe!
   82. Good cripple hitter Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:20 AM (#4390279)
There are no words for that.
   83. RollingWave Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:20 AM (#4390280)
This is eerily like the PR-USA game...

Or the TW-JPN game...
   84. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:20 AM (#4390281)
Jesus, Japan!! They are playing like garbage.
   85. Gamingboy Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:20 AM (#4390282)
Holy crap. Japan looked like the Chinese national team there.
   86. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:20 AM (#4390284)
WTF?
   87. Tschingsch Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:21 AM (#4390285)
Wow.
   88. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:22 AM (#4390286)
Was that really some kind of ridiculous double steal attempt?
   89. Honkie Kong Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:22 AM (#4390287)
JC Romero might take the tournament MVP if he keeps this up and PR wins it all!
   90. Gamingboy Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:22 AM (#4390288)
That poor guy is going to be a national goat in Japan.
   91. RollingWave Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:23 AM (#4390289)
Wow what was that?
   92. Gamingboy Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:24 AM (#4390290)
Wow what was that?

The start of the worst 4 years of Uchikawa's life.
   93. Honkie Kong Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:24 AM (#4390291)
To be fair, that might have been a DP turned on Abe anyway.
It is a high risk move, and a high reward one. It just went sour for them this time.
   94. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:24 AM (#4390292)
She's ball is probably a hit with the infield at double play depth.
   95. Tschingsch Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:24 AM (#4390293)
1st and 2nd with your best hitter up and Yadier Molina catching, and you double steal? I think the runner on 2nd saw Molina and said "nah, they couldn't have wanted me to steal, I must have gotten the sign wrong"
   96. Jarrod HypnerotomachiaPoliphili(Teddy F. Ballgame) Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:26 AM (#4390294)
Is Joe Torre in Japan's dugout?
   97. Gamingboy Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:26 AM (#4390295)

1st and 2nd with your best hitter up and Yadier Molina catching, and you double steal? I think the runner on 2nd saw Molina and said "nah, they couldn't have wanted me to steal, I must have gotten the sign wrong"

Or he saw "feint a steal to keep them honest" while the guy at first just saw "steal".
   98. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:35 AM (#4390299)
Why was that foul?
   99. Gamingboy Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:35 AM (#4390300)
Hmmmmmm....I think that was a fair ball...
   100. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 18, 2013 at 12:35 AM (#4390301)
Ah definitely hit his foot.
