And another mercy rule game. Not too surprising, though.

Yes. Really, the big difference between these teams is so often depth. The lesser teams are able to hold tough for 4-7 innings, but after that, once it becomes a game that requires deeper bullpens, they are usually toast. Only shot that I can see of Germany beating Canada is if the Canadian starter lays a gigantic egg and Germany is able to get a big lead early that they are able to barely keep.

(BTW, the Israel-Spain game will be on tape delay on MLB Network)

At 8pm. Why tape-delay it? They don't want to go up against (shudder) football...?!

Maybe they should just go to live coverage, since this game isn't going to be done by 8. It's after 7 and they just finished the 4th inning.

Keeping on track, 2 hours later and we're going to the 9th, tied at 7.

Extras. Heck of a game.

Extra innings! Frieman's up for Israel in the 10th, so Spain better get at least one here.

Israel's catcher just got tossed, apparently for arguing a ball four. Beltre's on first.

To be fair, it was a dogshit call.

This Zeid fellow has some talent. Big guy, heavy fastball.

Yunesky! Spain goes up 9-7!

(He's my rooting interest since he was on the Somerset Patriots this year.)

I'm disappointed. The current versions of Spain and Israel are pretty evenly matched but Israel would be so much stronger and more interesting in the wbc.

This is the best game of the tourney so far.

What a bummer. Thanks for moving up the qualifiers so the best Jewish players couldn't play, MLB.

Yes! Really good game.

While I know it won't be as good as the Israel team could be, are there any MLBers who could be on the Spanish team? Most obviously, some of the Cubans who, ah, won't be playing for Cuba.

(And yes, I've been waiting to ask that so I didn't jinx anything.)

Spain won. Now watch the next WBC have straight-up double elimination so Israel would have had a chance at getting a second chance to clinch.

Not that that's a good reason to make the change, but it's a good change to make.

So a bunch of Jewish players would have played for Israel in the WBC? I'm glad they lost. That's just stupid.
   20. Liver of blaspheming 'zop Posted: September 24, 2012 at 07:37 AM (#4243985)
Team Israel was almost entirely American Jews, even at this stage. It's just that the the best Jews couldn't play in-season; and even if the guys that mIght make Team USA wouldn't play for Israel (ie Kinsler and Braun), we could really have used the pitching of the handful of Jewish MLB guys.
