WBC update for 10-20-12: New Zealand releases a provisional roster, Japan starts inviting MLB players

New Zealand has released a provisional roster. Not surprisingly, it has a lot of North Americans and Australians of New Zealander descent on it, but it also has New Zealand-born professionals or former professionals on it as well, such as Beau Bishop (GCL Red Sox) and Scott Campbell (a former Toronto farmhand).

Samurai Japan has invited Ichiro, Norichika Aoki, Munenori Kawasaki, Yu Darvish, Hiroki Kuroda and Hisashi Iwakuma to play. They apparently have already given up on getting Hideki Matsui, since his team status is so up in the air. Koji Uehara will also probably be invited (as Koji Yamamato wants him to close), but hasn’t officially been so yet, apparently.

Finally, as pointed out in a few articles about his surgery, Derek Jeter almost certainly will be unable to take part for Team USA in the WBC, thus denying the world a Jeter-Torre reunion tour.

Sad about Jeter. But hopefully Toluwitzki will be available to play short stop for team USA.

Munerin? Does the Japanese team need a mascot/sideline entertainer that badly?
