WEEI: Leitch: Oh Canada? Thanks for Jason Bay

Hell…and Calixa Lavallee Stange while we’re at it.

Jason Bay has been one of baseball’s best players for five years now, but he has done so for a team that is perpetually in last place, in a city with a beautiful stadium but no actual fans. For a guy who once had Eddie Vedder encouraging fans to vote him into the All-Star Game, the odds that you ever gave Jason Bay much thought before he was traded here are minimal. And now, here he is, a linchpin of a team I still think is the favorite to win the World Series this year.

How will he do under the klieg lights of October? Canada’s record is spotty. The biggest Summer Olympics moment they’ve ever had involved Ben Johnson. Hardly anyone watches the NHL anymore. Right now the country’s legislature is in full turmoil. They didn’t make it out of the first round of the World Baseball Classic, despite Bay and Stubby Clapp. Heck, Sarah Palin has even stole their accent.

Jason Bay seems like the exact opposite of the type of guy who will hit a Grand Slam to win the World Series. It’s probably why he will.

gotta get past the rays and angels first. oh and yeah i have known about bay for a number of years, just because he didnt play in boston or NY doesnt mean he didnt exist. ########

Well, Donovan Bailey did win the medal in the same event that Ben Johnson was discredited for and even THAT wasnt the number 1 canadian olympic moment.
As for ball players um Fergie Jenkins is in the Hall of Fame.

I'm pretty sure Leitch isn't a Red Sox fan for whatever that's worth. Deadspin has been on the hate-all-things-Boston bandwagon for a long time too.

Though this column and the mugs of Dennis and Callahan were reminders of how much I despised WEEI when I lived in that neck of the woods.

Wow, I'm Canadian and I've never even heard of Jason Bay. Thanks for bringing him to my attention Will!

He's a Cards fan.

Twinkletoes kicked some ass in the 36 series

The idea that any MLB player, especially one who's been around as long as Bay has, can't handle pressure is laughable.

Against Ryan Dempster or Rich Harden...

Beside, Repoz, you really outdid yourself. I never thought I would read a mention about Calixa Lavallée on this site. Ever.

Sure we didn't make it out of the first round...but we beat those evil Americans!

That's gotta count for something, right?...

Amazing how Bay has been able to keep up his numbers after going from the Little Girls Leagues to the He-Man Masters of the Universe League...

Apparently someone never accepted Canada's apology for Bryan Adams.

I think it's totally unfair for Caliza Lavallée to get all this glory while Basile Routhier has not even been mentioned. So I, eeeeeeee, mention him!

Best Canadian moment was when Bobby Clarke two handed that Russian dude's ankle. I think that's the most unprovoked act of aggression Canada has ever displayed in their entire history

Yes, hardly anyone except for pretty much everyone in Canada.

Will Leitch is a piece of ####, and this column is just another data point.

If you go back far enough, Leitch is my cousin. So stfu.
