An out!
   102. perros Posted: August 19, 2018 at 01:41 PM (#5729715)
It was a balk, regardless.

Since Jansen went on the disabled list with an irregular heartbeat on Aug. 10, the Dodgers have lost on Ryan McMahon's walk-off homer off JT Chargois, Floro's walk-off walk, a four-run ninth off Scott Alexander, Kenta Maeda's ninth-inning loss after he was bumped from the rotation and now a walk-off balk.

The Dodgers using a major league game to rehab Buehler vs. the Cubs and pitching Kike instead of Kenta in extras vs the Pirates may come back to haunt them.

Balk!
   104. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: August 19, 2018 at 01:42 PM (#5729717)
Adam Eaton races over to the RF wall along the line, leaps and climbs a few feet up it to make a sensational catch to end the inning. And with Gio Gonzalez on the mound he and everyone is well aware of how precious those outs come.
   105. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: August 19, 2018 at 01:45 PM (#5729719)
(Just realized there's a thread for the walk-off balk call.)
   106. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: August 19, 2018 at 02:03 PM (#5729732)
HELL of a play from Diaz to get Hicks on that ball up the middle ...
   107. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: August 19, 2018 at 02:07 PM (#5729734)
Uh oh, Sir Didi pulled from the game ... hopefully it's just precautionary.
   108. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 19, 2018 at 02:08 PM (#5729735)
Cubs have their solo HR. The offense can take the rest of the day off.
   109. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: August 19, 2018 at 02:17 PM (#5729742)
Tonight the Mets play the Phillies in Williamsport, Pennsyltucky at historic Bowman Field. May I assume that Bowman Field has Major League dimensions or will this be a "Mets-Orioles exhibition game at RFK Stadium before they moved the Expos" kind of thing?
   110. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: August 19, 2018 at 02:23 PM (#5729752)
It's really never a question of whether Gio Gonzalez will fall apart on the mound, it's only a question of WHEN.

Mark Zuckerman @MarkZuckerman
Gio Gonzalez needed 6 pitches to get through the 1st inning. He needed 50 pitches to get through the 2nd and 3rd innings.
   111. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 19, 2018 at 02:29 PM (#5729757)
Yu is OUT after the first inning. Was motioning with his arm after he took the mound for the second. Not good!

This in a rehab start in A ball.
   112. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 19, 2018 at 02:53 PM (#5729766)
The Cubs have 4 runs in 3.5 games here in Pitt. Otoh, the pirates only have 3 and they all came in 1 inning.
   113. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 19, 2018 at 03:06 PM (#5729769)
Darvish told reporters he would undergo an MRI, assess the results and still would like to pitch this season. Same discomfort as last rehab start on June 24
   114. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 19, 2018 at 03:07 PM (#5729771)
Kopech will make his debut Tuesday against the twins. Eloy can't be far behind.
   115. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: August 19, 2018 at 03:10 PM (#5729773)
Todd Zolecki @ToddZolecki
The Phillies will play their 62nd game in franchise history at a neutral site and their first since Sept. 3, 1957, at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, NJ, where they were the visiting team against the Brooklyn Dodgers.
   116. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: August 19, 2018 at 03:17 PM (#5729777)
Jamal Collier @JamalCollier
The line for Gio Gonzalez: 4.2 IP, 10 H, 8 ER, 4 BB’s, 5 K’s. Yikes. His ERA is up to 4.51. 8-1 Marlins

Only 7 more starts to FREEDOM!!
   117. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 19, 2018 at 03:21 PM (#5729780)
In what looks to be an otherwise hapless effort for the Nationals today, terrific teenager Juan Soto has walked twice, breaking a tie with teammate Bryce Harper (56) for 3rd place on the Age-19 Single-Season BB Leaderboard, and positioning him to shatter one of MLB's oldest records, Will Smalley's 60 BB mark from 1890.
   118. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: August 19, 2018 at 03:26 PM (#5729783)
Welcome back Toe!
   119. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: August 19, 2018 at 03:29 PM (#5729784)
Now that's more of what I expect from Bird ...
   120. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: August 19, 2018 at 03:32 PM (#5729785)
But not what I expected from Higgy!
   121. rconn23 Posted: August 19, 2018 at 03:32 PM (#5729786)
I love Brett Gardner, but Aaron Hicks should be the Yankees leadoff hitter regardless of matchups. When - and if (gulp) Judge comes back, the 1-2-3 should be Hicks, Judge and Stanton.
   122. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 19, 2018 at 03:35 PM (#5729789)
The Cubs are going to have as many wins as they have shutouts for the rest of the year.
   123. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: August 19, 2018 at 03:43 PM (#5729794)
"Bruised heel" for Didi, more tests scheduled ...
   124. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 19, 2018 at 03:59 PM (#5729803)
Wasn't a fan of the Darvish signing and even less so now that he, ya know, never pitches.
   125. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 19, 2018 at 04:09 PM (#5729810)
Goes without saying in a four-game series where the Cubs have scored four total runs, all on solo homers, but the hitting with RISP has been abominable.
   126. Tom Nawrocki Posted: August 19, 2018 at 04:18 PM (#5729814)
The Rockies close out the Braves 4-2, finishing off a four-game sweep in Atlanta. At the moment, they're tied with Arizona for first place.

Heyward.
   128. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: August 19, 2018 at 04:37 PM (#5729829)
Pedro Slop strikes again.
   129. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 19, 2018 at 04:38 PM (#5729831)
He'll either groove one in or walk in the winning run.
   130. Zonk is a Doorknob Whisperer Posted: August 19, 2018 at 04:39 PM (#5729833)
Tailor-made 4-9-3 DP
   131. Loren F. Posted: August 19, 2018 at 04:40 PM (#5729834)
Good to see NYY’s bats come alive. I am glad that Bird has homers in back-to-back games, but he’s only gotten his OPS up to .717 so it’s not “all is forgiven!” If the Yankees still think of him as their starting 1B, he’s got to OPS closer to .800 for the rest of the season.
   132. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 19, 2018 at 04:40 PM (#5729835)
Well he grooved one, but I forgot that the double play is the only reason the Cubs haven't been decimated this weekend.
   133. phredbird Posted: August 19, 2018 at 04:50 PM (#5729843)
cardinals making a game of it in the 8th, wisdom conks a quick homer batting in the pitchers spot.

wonder if the announcers are going to give the credit to shildt.
   134. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 19, 2018 at 04:54 PM (#5729847)
Pedro is seriously playing with fire today.
   135. Zonk is a Doorknob Whisperer Posted: August 19, 2018 at 04:56 PM (#5729848)
Caratini isn't available to close it out, either.
   136. Walt Davis Posted: August 19, 2018 at 04:58 PM (#5729851)
How many innings does this game have to go before the Cubs are allowed to hit their next solo HR?
   137. Zonk is a Doorknob Whisperer Posted: August 19, 2018 at 05:04 PM (#5729858)
ugh
   138. Walt Davis Posted: August 19, 2018 at 05:07 PM (#5729862)
Just curious, with Russell picked off, does this still count as a PA with RISP?
   139. phredbird Posted: August 19, 2018 at 05:10 PM (#5729867)

dang, gryorko almost tied it with 2 out in the 9th, but it died just short of the fence.
   140. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: August 19, 2018 at 05:10 PM (#5729868)
From RAB:

4:37pm ET: Aaron Boone said Gregorius has a “pretty significant” bruise and could wind up on the disabled list. Sigh. I guess this means Gleyber Torres takes over at shortstop with some combination of Neil Walker, Ronald Torreyes, and Tyler Wade getting time at second.
   141. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 19, 2018 at 05:11 PM (#5729869)
Oh, that's not a strike. That's a f***ing disgrace.
   142. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 19, 2018 at 05:12 PM (#5729870)
Cubs don't need any help getting the strikeouts. That was terrible.
   143. Walt Davis Posted: August 19, 2018 at 05:13 PM (#5729872)
My opinion differs from that of the home plate umpire.
   144. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 19, 2018 at 05:13 PM (#5729873)
Not close. Horrible.
   145. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 19, 2018 at 05:13 PM (#5729874)
It's not a matter of opinion, Walt.
   146. Zonk is a Doorknob Whisperer Posted: August 19, 2018 at 05:18 PM (#5729879)
This strikezone is starting to become a bit random.
   147. Zonk is a Doorknob Whisperer Posted: August 19, 2018 at 05:18 PM (#5729880)
welp, that sucks
   148. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 19, 2018 at 05:19 PM (#5729883)
Welp, the offense was pretty clearly not going to score another run, so maybe it was best to just give up a homer before you go through the whole bullpen. Can we officially call it the Brandon Kintzler Experience now?
   149. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 19, 2018 at 05:21 PM (#5729885)
Let's be honest, it's not like the Cubs were going to score again, anyway, so it's better to just end it instead of burning through more pitchers.

They're still positioned well in the NL Central, but that's been a factor mostly of the Brewers also being in a freefall and the Cardinals, hot as they are, having had a huge hole to work out of.

edit: coke to Elroy
   150. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: August 19, 2018 at 06:31 PM (#5729926)
Candy Maldonado is now a single short of the cycle after hitting a solo home run in Oakland. Somebody alert Lance F. Cormier!!

Pagán keeps giving up homers. Maybe they should get religion and pitch Jesús Reyes???
   151. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: August 19, 2018 at 06:39 PM (#5729931)
Can we officially call it the Brandon Kintzler Experience now?

Kintzler was a finalist to portray Tim Hudson in the movie Moneyball, so there's that.
   152. Baldrick Posted: August 19, 2018 at 07:10 PM (#5729938)
Position player pitcher for the Mariners. Andrew Romine in for the 3rd time this year and 7th time in his career.

It makes sense, because he certainly HITS like a pitcher.
   153. Baldrick Posted: August 19, 2018 at 07:15 PM (#5729940)
Faced four batters: two hits, a 3-run HR, and then he hit Machado on the hand, so it's going pretty well.
   154. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 19, 2018 at 07:29 PM (#5729942)
The Mets' starting pitchers are watching the game from the stands with some Little Leaguers - I was going to deduct points from deGrom for not having a nickname on his jersey, but when he's sitting next to Matz ("Matzy") and Wheeler ("Wheels"), you see why you can't really blame him for not bothering.
   155. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2018 at 08:02 PM (#5729953)
Each MLB team should schedule a non-zero number of MLB games in minor-league stadiums throughout the season.
   156. Howie Menckel Posted: August 19, 2018 at 08:07 PM (#5729955)
The Phillies will play their 62nd game in franchise history at a neutral site and their first since Sept. 3, 1957, at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, NJ, where they were the visiting team against the Brooklyn Dodgers.

I used to work with a guy who covered those Jersey City games - funny that even in the 1950s, a New York team was trying to use the idea of a possible relocation to New Jersey as leverage for a new stadium. then in the early 1970s, the Giants did just that - followed by the WHA Knights, the Nets, and the Jets (the Devils came from Colorado as the Rockies).

Rickey Henderson played in that Jersey City stadium as an Athletics minor-leaguer 40 years ago, famously describing it as "a dump."
   157. Lassus Posted: August 19, 2018 at 08:17 PM (#5729957)
Olney saying Jose Bautista is a threat at the plate?
   158. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: August 19, 2018 at 08:51 PM (#5729961)
Kingery should have put JETER on his umi.
   159. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 19, 2018 at 09:09 PM (#5729968)
Hey, ARod? The word "hitterish" means absolutely nothing.
   160. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: August 19, 2018 at 10:49 PM (#5730000)
Who the h3ll is/was "Brad" that I kept seeing in the ESPN closed captions?
