Gary Sanchez HR (#10); Yankees lead A's 1-0 in 2nd.

EDIT : Aaron Hicks goes back-to-back, 2-0.

Javy hitting leadoff against Shields today. I knows like it.

HOW WILL THE ANGELS BULLPEN LOSE TODAY?!
   4. Howie Menckel Posted: May 12, 2018 at 01:56 PM (#5671269)
DIDI IS NOW 0-for-30
and I am NOT kidding that today is Didi Gregorius Bat Day

NOT, as the Yankees sign read, Didi Gregious Bat Day
   5. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: May 12, 2018 at 01:57 PM (#5671270)
Didi now 0-2 today.

Good thing he's batting 3rd right now ...
   6. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: May 12, 2018 at 02:38 PM (#5671281)
ALL RISE for a MOONSHOT!
   7. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 12, 2018 at 02:39 PM (#5671282)
ALL RISE! The Honorable Aaron Judge has gaveled a 2-run HR to get the Yankees back in the game a bit, trailing 6-4.
   8. Howie Menckel Posted: May 12, 2018 at 02:41 PM (#5671283)
it's over!
Didi nearly got punched out on a borderline check swing, but 3rd-base ump showed mercy
then, a single to left
now 1 for 31
   9. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: May 12, 2018 at 02:45 PM (#5671284)
Damn, hella play at 3rd by Chapman to take a hit away from Stanton.
   10. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: May 12, 2018 at 02:57 PM (#5671287)
2nd in a row that Hicks just missed ...

I'd bring Betances back out for a 2nd.
   13. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: May 12, 2018 at 04:11 PM (#5671294)
Guess not, Chapman in.

Guess the days of Bullpen Roulette are never over.

Click. Click. Click. Bang?

NO! ANOTHER CLICK!

(what an escape)
   15. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: May 12, 2018 at 04:38 PM (#5671300)
But now, because Boon-ey wouldn't go two with any of his 1st 3 relievers, here comes AJ Cole on 13 days rest.

Methinks the Yankees are just about out of empty chambers ...
   16. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: May 12, 2018 at 04:49 PM (#5671303)
Another escape.
   17. Jay Seaver Posted: May 12, 2018 at 04:52 PM (#5671304)
Second time through the lineup, the Red Sox seem to have Estrada's number.
   18. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 12, 2018 at 04:54 PM (#5671305)
Man, what happened to James Shields?
   19. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 12, 2018 at 04:58 PM (#5671306)
I'd bring Betances back out for a 2nd.

2nd-Inning Betances has been pretty shakey. Inexplicable perhaps, but there seemed to be other options than tempting fate.

This year.

In what, 3 multi-inning appearances?

After how many years of being able to give you a good 2 when needed?

He threw 11 pitches, 8 for strikes.

And, if not him, Green threw only 12.
   21. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: May 12, 2018 at 05:10 PM (#5671310)
Meanwhile, Cole has recovered greatly from his back-to-back walk start of the 10th.
   22. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 12, 2018 at 05:23 PM (#5671312)
Good to see the Cubs graciously accepting the gift of facing James Shields.

WALK 'EM OFF, WALKER!!!
   24. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 12, 2018 at 05:25 PM (#5671314)
That was a tough win for the pinstriped lads! 7-6 in 11.
   25. Walt Davis Posted: May 12, 2018 at 05:31 PM (#5671315)
Interesting that against the sidearming RHP, Maddon didn't start either Zo or Happ. Not that it's mattered.

Bryant's K-rate now below 16%. Javy closing in on 20%. Russell has been struggling but is still under 19% K-rate. Schwarber is at 24% and Happ at a stunning 45% but otherwise, the Cubs no longer trot out a high-K lineup (by today's standards).

Happ on-(rare)-contact: 449/816

Watched that replay at the plate from different angles and still dont see how they could have over-turned that call by the home plate umpire.
   29. rconn23 Posted: May 12, 2018 at 06:35 PM (#5671331)
Of all the Yankees players to root against, Didi seems an odd choice.
   30. Jay Seaver Posted: May 12, 2018 at 06:40 PM (#5671334)
I don't know that Howie's actually rooting against Didi, although I also don't think that there's anything odd about rooting against a guy who was an average defense-first player suddenly becoming a star and offensive force when he gets to New York. The Yankees don't need that sort of windfall.
   31. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: May 12, 2018 at 06:59 PM (#5671341)
@28 Seconded. *Maybe* he nicked him with the glove but it sure didn't look clear enough to overturn.
   32. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 12, 2018 at 07:15 PM (#5671342)
Willson Contreras another HR today. 25 total bases his last 3 games.
   33. Howie Menckel Posted: May 12, 2018 at 07:20 PM (#5671344)
oh, I don't have anything against Gregorius himself.

I just can't stand how no one in the TV/radio media here are willing to use his easily pronounceable last name, as if he's a child. and the hype machine off his torrid start managed to do the impossible: they oversold a few mind-boggling offensive weeks of baseball.

the Yankees in recent years haven't had a lot of odious players (although Chapman seems like a charmer).

other than Judge and Stanton appearing to be mutants, and the fact that I would be terrified to be locked in a room with Green's deadeye stare, they're mostly a harmless lot.

Gallo now 0 for 12 career with 11 K vs Charlie Morton, who has a career-high 13 Ks

in this day and age, how hard would it be to show Gallo video that shows that if he swings at none of the pitches, he will draw a walk (I suspect every time)? once that happens a few times, at least it evens the playing field a little bit.

I've always heard it pronounced Gre-GORE-ee-us, but according to bb-ref, it's GREG-or-ee-us. So maybe they're trying to avoid making a mistake.

It was just funny watching the Yankee fans tie themselves in knots trying to convince themselves that Gregorius had actually made dramatic strides as a hitter. Look at his z-swing percentage!

I'm not sure what you're referring to, since on the YES telecasts they (especially Kay) use his first name and last name interchangeably, probably in order to avoid always repeating themselves.

And BTW did you go into a similar funk when Magic Johnson's real first name (Earvin) was never used in broadcasts?

funny because the Yankees rookie is an-DOO-har, while in the 1980s the Cardinals had Joaquin AND-oo-har

And when the HEWSton Astros are in town, they're likely at some point to encounter HOWSSton Street. And it's KI-ro, Egypt and CARE-o, Illinois. Blacks in Albany, Georgia say ALL-bany, while old school whites say All-BENNY. BFD to all of it, including Didi and the Andujars.

Good news for amphibians! The Dodgers are calling up ambidextrous pitcher Pat Venditte. He'd have a better chance if the monodexterous majority didn't manipulate the rules to limit his hard-earned advantage.
   50. phredbird Posted: May 13, 2018 at 12:02 AM (#5671405)
boy, cards catcher sure looked casual fielding his dropped third strike and throwing out the padre batter.
   51. phredbird Posted: May 13, 2018 at 12:03 AM (#5671406)
now tuvailala (sp?) can't find the frikkin strike zone.

damn ... that's a hit.

oh dangit ... bad break for gyorko on that grounder. he knew he had to hurry and just couldn't make the barehanded play. at least he just ate it instead of forcing a bad play.

so now its men on 1st and 2nd, 1 out bottom of the tenth.

pitcher change, what else ...
   53. phredbird Posted: May 13, 2018 at 12:15 AM (#5671410)
wow ... hosmer swings at a terrible pitch, dinks it right to gyorko for the force and then to first for the double play!!!

John Brebbia is a made up name!
   57. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 13, 2018 at 12:38 AM (#5671416)
The Angels are wasting a lot of opportunities to walk off with a win... which means they probably won't. Four scoreless innings is three more than what this bullpen can generally muster.

I'm only half-watching, but these Padres relievers look awful. They've served up lots of inside and/high breaking pitches that just scream "Kill Me!" and the Cardinals haven't done anything with these pitches.
   59. greenback slays lewks Posted: May 13, 2018 at 12:41 AM (#5671419)
Also, I'm rather tired of the Marines commercial with the Downton Abbey theme on mlb.tv.

That is part of it, and the batters keep letting the pitchers off.. mind you, Wong got hosed on ball four that was called strike two, but it seems if the pitcher does get behind in the count for either team, the batter starts expanding the strike zone, instead of tightening it down to work the walk.

And the Padres hitters are just swinging wildly at everything.

It's 2018. If the batter flinches, it's called a swing. It's like they took Bob Davidson's definition of a balk and applied it to hitters.

Sh|t's happening in this Angels game.

edit: nvm
   66. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 13, 2018 at 12:58 AM (#5671426)
With a man on third and two outs, the Twins walk Pujols and Simmons to load the bases. I get maybe setting up a force play, but this opens themselves up to a bases-loaded walk to end the game.
   67. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 13, 2018 at 12:59 AM (#5671427)
The Angels leave two on in the ninth, two in the 10th, and three in the 11th. That's bad.

To me that has almost always been the case, but that Wong call was more protective than intent(the rule doesn't state it has to cross the plane, but the bat didn't remotely come close to moving towards the plane... it was an inside pitch that he stepped into and pulled the bat back to avoid being hit....any intent to swing was protective, and it wasn't remotely a swing by any definition of that word)

   69. cardsfanboy Posted: May 13, 2018 at 01:02 AM (#5671429)
Brebbia out for his third inning of work.... I didn't know he was capable of that.... I don't know much about him to be honest.... but he just seemed like a no name reliever....

Looking him up, and he's been a reliever for his entire minor league career(he has 6 games started in 270 minor league games... )
   70. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 13, 2018 at 01:07 AM (#5671430)
And the Twins take the lead. Man, the offense has so failed today.

I'm watching this Cards-Padres game because I figure eventually the Nats will face the Cards, but their first meeting is not until August 13 fer cryin out loud! Anything could happen between now and then. Hmmmm, how bout that Mike Trout feller...
   72. cardsfanboy Posted: May 13, 2018 at 01:07 AM (#5671432)
The Padres put a pinch runner in for the hitter that just got walk, it is a pitcher, and Brebbia immediately throws a weak ass pick off throw...so not a real attempt to surprise him, just a throw over I guess to say "I'm not going to forget you are over there man." (or they could be worried about the sacrifice) ...

instead a passed ball allows him to advance....
   73. greenback slays lewks Posted: May 13, 2018 at 01:09 AM (#5671433)
To me that has almost always been the case

I'm old enough to remember the 1982 World Series, where pretty much everything was called a non-swing. TV replays clearly influenced the umpires.

I'm old enough to remember that, and I guess we have different memories, because everything was always called a strike to me. As long as you made the appeal. I used to ##### about Molina because in his early days he wouldn't make the appeal if he thought it wouldn't get the call and probably cost about a dozen or so strikes every year that the umps would have given to him.

deGrom in his return walks the first three batters, then battles out of it with a strikeout, 1-2 force and strikeout. 45 pitches due to 20 (!!) foul balls, and he gets lifted for a pinch-hitter in the top of the second.

Meanwhile, this has got to be the most mindblowing game of the day: After giving up 4 home runs and 7 runs without recording an out in his last start against the Royals, Dylan Bundy put up 7 shutout innings with a 77 Game Score against the Rays today, while the Orioles are winning 17 to 0. Backwards reels the mind.

Matt Kelly @mattkellyMLB
From @EliasSports:
Jacob deGrom's 45-pitch 1st inning marked the most pitches thrown in a scoreless AND hitless inning since Arizona's Nick Bierbrodt got through 48 pitches in a scoreless/hitless 1st vs. the Cubs on 6/13/2001

Anthony DiComo @AnthonyDiComo
The modern record for pitches thrown in a game in which the pitcher lasted one inning or less belongs (because of course it does) to Bartolo Colon, who threw SIXTY-ONE and recorded just two outs on 4/9/97.

Wainwright maxing out at 89 mph right now, that probably isn't going to be enough to go deep into this game. Both Matheny and Maddux look a bit worried watching him pitch.

28 pitches so far in the first inning for Waino, bases loaded two outs though....

Only been checking the game here and there, but the Cubs have blown a ton of chances in this game. Seven walks, five stolen bases, getting lots of guys into scoring position, yet they've only got three runs.

Gets out of the inning, but still two walks, single and 33 pitches, and a fast ball that is topping at 88-89 mph...it's going to be a long night for the Cardinals if Waino isn't able to find the strike zone soon.

Have to love it when your guy gets picked off and then ends up getting the steal anyway.

Yeah, but you're still probably not going to score much when you only get two damn hits.

career high for walks in a game by Wainwright with 6.

Yankees really could have used a rainout today. Severino pitching ok, but he's going no more than 6, if that. They will have to tax an already worn out bullpen if they want to win this one. Games against Brett Anderson shouldn't be this hard.

I remember a couple years ago when he had 6 walks through like 12 starts..

EDIT: 2013, first 12 starts, he had 6 walks, against 84 strikeouts. He used to be really, really good.

At least there's an off day tomorrow ...
