Hey, I know... today, let's argue about Pujols' age and who is a racist. That should be fun.
   2. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 05, 2018 at 01:35 PM (#5666905)
HOW OLD WILL ALBERT PUJOLS BE TODAY?!
   3. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: May 05, 2018 at 01:46 PM (#5666910)
Phew.

Didn't think Gray was going to get out of that inning without runs scoring ...
   4. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: May 05, 2018 at 02:08 PM (#5666915)
Bauer could throw a perfecto today and I wouldn't be surprised ...

Ugh.

That might be all they need today.

HELL of an at bat from Romine ...
   7. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 05, 2018 at 02:36 PM (#5666931)
That'll learn that team full of Trump lovers.
   8. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: May 05, 2018 at 02:36 PM (#5666933)
Lovely ... just LOVELY!!!

C'mon Gritty ... sweep the leg.
   10. salvomania Posted: May 05, 2018 at 02:39 PM (#5666935)
Does Chatwood always throw 25+ pitch scoreless innings?
   11. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 05, 2018 at 02:43 PM (#5666937)
And the Indians give up another free run by not challenging the non-tag call on Torreyes.
   12. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: May 05, 2018 at 02:49 PM (#5666942)
Definitely have to go for the easy out there, with a 3 run lead. Don't know what the announcers are smoking.
   13. cardsfanboy Posted: May 05, 2018 at 02:56 PM (#5666945)
very close play, but I think he was probably safe, not sure if replay is going to overrule the ump.
   14. cardsfanboy Posted: May 05, 2018 at 02:57 PM (#5666947)
2-0 now as the call was overturned. Replay made the right call on a tough play to overturn and did it fairly fast.
   15. cardsfanboy Posted: May 05, 2018 at 03:01 PM (#5666949)
4-0 now Chicago, and I don't think they have hit the ball more than 120 feet nor have they hit anything hard, just finding the gaps.
   16. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 05, 2018 at 03:22 PM (#5666955)
I just hope Zimmer's okay. That was a hell of try on Romine's double.

HAMMER Time.

NAILED!
   20. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 05, 2018 at 03:41 PM (#5666964)
Yankees are 14-1 in their last 15.
   21. cardsfanboy Posted: May 05, 2018 at 03:46 PM (#5666966)
Chatwood really struggling back to back walks and then a hit by pitch to open up the fourth inning.
   22. cardsfanboy Posted: May 05, 2018 at 03:51 PM (#5666969)
Cubs just coughed up the 4-0 lead thanks to poor pitching, poor defense(Rizzo and Schwarber) and a bit of luck.
   23. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 05, 2018 at 04:07 PM (#5666975)
Chatwood is the kind of pitcher who makes baseball almost unwatchable
   24. cardsfanboy Posted: May 05, 2018 at 04:18 PM (#5666979)
Baez golfs a ball over the fence. Good pitch that he just went down and got.
   25. cardsfanboy Posted: May 05, 2018 at 04:34 PM (#5666984)
Cardinals pen, shipping the bed another hr allowed, this time to Rizzo.
   26. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 05, 2018 at 05:32 PM (#5667016)
Man that was center cut.
   27. cardsfanboy Posted: May 05, 2018 at 05:33 PM (#5667017)
This game has been a bit weird, but I'm liking it so far, 6-6 bottom of the ninth.....
   28. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 05, 2018 at 05:36 PM (#5667018)
Oh, man. I thought Fowler was going to walk this one off.
   29. cardsfanboy Posted: May 05, 2018 at 05:40 PM (#5667021)
Cardinals have a short bullpen today(nobody was called up to replace Leone) , lost two starters to injury(Pham and Molina), so they have limited options for extra innings.(nobody at all on the bench remains)
   30. Walt Davis Posted: May 05, 2018 at 05:42 PM (#5667025)
AL OPS by position:

C 663
1B 760
2B 690
3B 802
SS 799
LF 727
CF 730
RF 757
DH 719

SS and 3B leading the way and it's not particularly close so far.

NL looks a bit more traditional but 3B still leading the way, 2B outhitting all 3 OF positions:

C 701
1B 765
2B 740
3B 770
SS 683
LF 736
CF 738
RF 727

EDIT: For MLB overall, SS are out-hitting LF, CF and just one point shy of RF.
   31. cardsfanboy Posted: May 05, 2018 at 05:46 PM (#5667027)
Now Norris out of the game with an injury.
   32. cardsfanboy Posted: May 05, 2018 at 05:52 PM (#5667030)
Carpenter makes a great catch to end the inning and save a run.
   33. cardsfanboy Posted: May 05, 2018 at 05:57 PM (#5667032)
Wong wins it....
   34. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 05, 2018 at 05:57 PM (#5667033)
Wong man at the Wong time.

Nice win for the Cards.

NL Central should be a dog fight. Four good teams, no great teams. Should be fun.

It's Yoenis Cespedes Bobblehead Night AND Bark at the Park Night at CitiField.

HOW MANY RUNS WILL THE METS GIVE UP IN THE FIRST INNING TODAY?

stuff you don't see every day:

Padres' Cordero on 1st base with 1 one out vs LAD, steals 2nd, throw goes into CF, Franchy goes to 3rd.
but ump calls what as kids we called a "do-over" - says that the batter's follow-through on the swing led the bat to nick the bat of the catcher, so they send Cordero back to first. funny thing is they said the rule was "impede," and if it did that it appeared to be news to the catcher.

so we forget it ever happened. batter then singles, and Cordero again races to 3rd. then a foul fly ball leads to a diving catch by rookie Verdugo, who went a long long way to get it. Cordero tags up and scores to tie the game at 3-3.

one of those classic debates: do you want to catch that foul ball and allow the tying run to score - or let it go and hope to keep the lead?
   42. cardsfanboy Posted: May 05, 2018 at 09:06 PM (#5667110)
Somewhere I read that Wong was the first Cardinal since 1913 to have two hit by pitches in a game and then hit a walk off homerun... So I did a pi search for it...I couldn't find the other Cardinal but did find 8 players that match that criteria....Fisk, Rizzo, LaRue, Sean Berry, Ripken, Hoiles, Gary Carter and Ed Hermann... of course the method of doing the search doesn't actually guarantee that it was a walk off homerun, just that it happened in a walk off game.

The funny thing is that among these 8 guys you have 5 of them that were catchers. Sadly the walk off criteria is only good for 1974 games and sooner.
   43. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 05, 2018 at 09:23 PM (#5667113)
Andrelton Simmons is hitting .345/.405/.527. Never would have seen that coming.
   44. Howie Menckel Posted: May 05, 2018 at 09:36 PM (#5667117)
Cespedes is a conundrum

he can drive management nuts, but.....

tonight he's on 1st base with 1 out in the 8th of a 1-0 game vs Adam Ottavino - the Rockies RP with the Bugs Bunny slider/95 mph fastball - and 31 K vs 4 H in 17 IP this year

he stealthily steals 2nd as the tying run

then he has 3rd stolen, too, but the batter fouls off the pitch

in the top of the 9th, he unleashes his typical cannon to barely take down another runner at the plate

why does anyone run on this guy?
yeah, the Rockies made it 2-0 on the hit and this was the second guy trying to score and there were 2 outs - but it's also that Howitzer
   45. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 05, 2018 at 09:47 PM (#5667121)

why does anyone run on this guy?

I was doing a google search on Ichiro and watching videos, and there is something like an 8 minute video of him making strong ass throws in which nobody ever ran on him.

This is always amusing . . . when it happens to someone else:
Buster Olney, @Buster_ESPN

All of the Cardinals infielders and reliever Jordan Hicks have gathered around catcher Yadier Molina after he got hit flush in the worst spot by a foul ball on a 100 mph pitch. And Molina departs the field, slowly.

Ouch.

Mitch Moreland is proof positive that there is no justice in this life. Guy should have washed out of MLB 4 years ago, and now sits on $25M of career earnings.
   52. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 05, 2018 at 10:18 PM (#5667133)
The Angels have had 9 ABs with RISP in the first four innings, and no RBIs to show for it. That's gonna come back to bite them.

Colin McHugh of the Astros is the first pitcher to use the Diamondbacks bullpen cart in a regular season game. This is by far the most important news of the night.

Craig Kimbrel is the 29th pitcher to record 300 saves, reaching the mark in fewer games (494), in fewer save opportunities (330), and at a younger age (29) than any other pitcher. His save percentage of 90.9 is the highest in baseball history (min. 250 save opportunities).

Only 353 more saves and he'll pass Mo.
   65. cardsfanboy Posted: May 05, 2018 at 11:54 PM (#5667182)
sadly save percentage is a crappy stat until it includes holds in it's equation. (A blown hold counts as a blown save, while an actual hold doesn't count for ####.... so a guy who in his early career is a setup man for a year or two, is getting penalized for blown saves while never actually being given the opportunity to actually record a save)

I may have a new favorite player. Mark Canha's walkup music is Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone." (He also just batted in a ski mask, even though it's 53 degrees in Oakland according to WU.)

Free baseball in Seattle. No idea how Blake Parker got out of that inning. He's inexplicably terrible.

Yet another blown lead. The bullpen is terrible. If the Angels fail this year, the bullpen will be why.
   71. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 06, 2018 at 01:24 AM (#5667200)
I am somewhat annoyed that the Mariners broadcast refers to Mel Stottlemyre, Jr. without the Jr. It's like they don't think my view of the universe controls such matters. Alas, Jr. looks a little old for the son of the man who pitched the Yanks to the pennant after being called up mid-season in 1964.

So, you don't see that very often.

The Rays had runners on first and third, with one out.

In the span of three pitches, the Jays catch a runner stealing second, and the Jays catch a runner stealing home.
The batter did not finish his plate appearance.
